Re: OH MY GOD! -moments
The entire 7th stage of Zero Wing(Belllon), is an OMG moment waiting to freakin' happen....everytime I make it there, I reach a point where A) I got've winged xenomorphs comin' in from above-that shoot aimmed shots; B) pusatating slug things that have a scary fast spread in front or behind me; C) skull things that shoot straight lasers if you leave them alone, but break into F@$%#@%in' indestructible sharapnel if you kill them slowly scrolling in from the right!
all in freakin' tight quarters...
Eventually, it escalates to such a state, that I just rage quit.

So, I recently picked up the XOP games. Didn't read instructions in the text files, just popped in XOP Black Ultra Special. Made it to the first boss, screen fills with bullets, I use a bomb expecting that to fix everything.

Otomedius Excellent: The three possible wall collisions in the game. It gets you so used to not running into walls that when you do, and it kills you, you're like "Must resist urge to throw expensive controller at more expensive television"

I didn't have too much trouble with it either. BUT the ice block rush onwards is a bit silly. A long Boss rush with a nasty tight gap Boss at the end, and that's BEFORE Stage 10 descends into the final section where the lights flicker off and on (not in the PS2 port by the way!).
Personally I don't think they backed off for Gradius IV. Its actually the game I would have used for my OH MY GOD moments. The damn thing flies me into a rage.
tviks eats it but IT eats me.
I disagree. Back in the day, one of us (Michael/Android) watched KAC get to Stage 10 of Gradius III arcade and a couple of Stage 9 ice block rush failures and 1 credited straight to the Stage 9 ice cubes on his first Gradius III credit ever* Any moment of arcade Gradius III. A game so tough that Konami backed off a bit for G4.

Yeah. Agree Gradius IV didn't back down much at all on difficulty. The only thing that changed was WHEN the game got hard. Rather than stage 3 or 4 it was 6. Then the game was like "Cool story. You lose"DEL wrote:gameoverDude wrote;I disagree. Not to mention rank didn't go down very far from inserting another credit, so continuing was completely useless in Gradius IV unless you did it 60+ times without killing ANYTHING on each credit.

Re: OH MY GOD! -moments
I managed to complete both Gradius III and Gradius IV only by endless credit feeding, and even then I was pretty hard-pushed. Interesting to know that PS2 port missed the light flickering bit, that sounds just stupid.DEL wrote:gameoverDude wrote;I disagree. I also agree that the ice block level was stupid hard. This game was sooo much better on Snes.
I have played Gradius IV only once - when it was released, I credit-fed it to the end. I think it took me something like 3-4 hours. I was cursing and swearing through the whole time, and in the end I was so traumatized by the experience that I never wanted to play it again.
Re: OH MY GOD! -moments
^There ya go.
Gradius III in the arcade was unbalanced as hell (not hard until the end of ST9 onwards). Stage 3 was a mess - 15 boring minutes followed by a Boss that is better to time-out rather than try to kill.
The lights not flickering off & on on the PS2 port was actually a good decision. It makes the port less than a perfect copy of the original board, but the lights were going off during a grid filled by indestructable laser firing gun emplacements. What made it worse was they move up and down firing lasers until you shoot them, then they come back to life after a couple of secs
- all this going on in the dark! I really don't know what they were thinking when they designed this game?! Way too long and with no continues available in the arcade. It didn't make any sense from a coin munching point of view.
Gradius IV flew me into game rages like no other game before or since.

That's what I meant, it sound like really bad idea so I'm thankful that they left that out from the PS2 version.DEL wrote:^There ya go.

This being said, the whole thing is kinda moot, since the Snes version is the one everyone should go for. It's amazing how they took totally unplayable mess (Gradius 3 pcb) and turned it into one of the greatest shmups ever (Gradius 3 Snes)!

You dodge hundreds and thousands of fast bullets and then comes THAT ONE SLOW SINGLE RANDOM LONELY FUCKING BULLET on the screen that hits you.......

Any stage with walls that suddenly move and crush me. Bad enough they completely mess with strategic flying in scrolling shmups, but the sudden explosion as one slides and kills you or moves into a position to completely trap you until you screen death reduces me to a growling beast with a controller in my mouth.

Re: OH MY GOD! -moments
I must say there's no feeling quite like clearing a game live. This Tuesday I started doing runs on the Progear cab at Full Tilt for a few hours, and considering that NTSC-J was watching me I was a bit nervous and died really early in my first run. I think about 20 minutes and a few attempts later I was at 4 lives on the final boss and there was a crowd of 5 or so people around me. I did terribly, considering that I generally aim to 1-life that boss, but being able to sit back and watch the ending play was quite something.

That's every time I play Sengoku Ace right there. The whole screen can be empty except for one bullet and I'll ram it.Cers wrote:You dodge hundreds and thousands of fast bullets and then comes THAT ONE SLOW SINGLE RANDOM LONELY FUCKING BULLET on the screen that hits you.......
