Oh my god, as a kid, I freaked out as I found out that there is a "gunhed"-movie. I loved the game for the pc-engine, this glorious machine.

But as I saw the movie...

It just sucked.

Yeah, fond childhood memories...

I would propose the movie is better than the game. Not that the two have anything in common other than the name.

I've been wanting to buy The Last Starfighter, but its out of print.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/THE-LAST-STARFI ... B0055KO9X4
There's one in the UK for £29.95

Wargames has Broderick playing Galaga and Soylent Green has a Space War cab.
Plus (not movies) Eastenders featured its MACROSS cab heavily the other night
I have the Salamander Anime series.

Blood Simple has a Pleiades cab make a short cameo. Not a shmup movie but there is a fair bit of shooting too, haha.

Oh yeah, totally forgot - there is a Xevious movie which I guess could be shmup-like. But it's never been released on home media and was apparently only shown during one summer in Japan (and not in proper theaters either, but in these trailer trucks that would roam across the country), so only a handful on japanese people have actually seen it.

There was that movie with a P-38, which did a barrel roll. That`s all I remember about it. Barrel rolls FTW.

Star Wars, Last Exile and Wings (THE shmup movie, come to think of it). Also, Partizanska eskadrila.
The Yamamoto Youko OAV's premise is akin to that of The Last Starfighter.

I haven't seen the TV series.
Tenamonya Voyagers end credits are basically a yukkuri shmup made before the yukkuri fad came along.

Have you played GunHed on Hard? (Takes entering a code.) I'd say it's better than Shienryu on Very Hard.

top gun.... yeah the aerial dog fights would qualify as a shmup movie... still no love for it.
wonder how you would go about converting a danmaku shmup (eg dodonpachi) to a movie or anime or manga???

Gunbuster is one of my favorite anime series bar none. I've probably watched it like 50 times over the years. Awesome stuff - melodramatic, but awesome.

I think it was more like the end of the beginning.

Only problem with Gunbuster is they never made a shmup of it! Damn missed opportunity right there.

Crazy -- me too. Trying to go back to the 80's but until my time machine is done that's the best I'll do. Only got about 10 minutes in, but I will watch them all soon. I saw them ages ago... campy, but hey, it's the 80's.
Oh what? I gotta check this out, looks good.
Wait -- never seen? Yes, it's great. *HOWEVER*, you gotta go in w/ the right frame of mind, which not everyone can get. It was one of the first commercially subtitled animes WAY the fuck back when (can you say VHS?) and w/ little exposure to anything of Japan, you'd just think it's the campiest sci-fi story ever. If you realize the show is from start to finish (okay, maybe not the last episode) a self-parody you will enjoy it more. Other wise it just seems like it's over the top in the name of fan service. This is where the jiggly tits come in that rancor is talking about. The Japanese aren't know for their humor, but these are kind of meant as a joke. Sure, some people fap to them, but there's at least a reason behind it.

I watched the series a few years ago again, w/ a much better grasp of the language and a bit better grasp of the science behind it. It's more entertaining now than it was then. It has many staples of the era, plus all sorts of other cool shit. And... robots. Might give it another shot.

I heard the PS2 game sucked. Comments?

You could say that as well.

For me Gunbuster was good, but it marked the beginning of a steady decline. The fatality was delivered by a steaming pile of dog shit pooped out in 1994 called "Plastic Little". Starting with that film and continuing until the present day, all anime is dead to me. haha.. With that being said, I do enjoy the occasional episode of Conan on network TV.

Just like all live-action film has been dead since Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Anyway, Progear reminds me of The Wings of Honneamise.

Plastic Little was totally awersome. The animation was smooth as hell 8)

Anyway, you should check out Sol Bianca - the original OAVs, not the crappy remakes (I think there was even a video game made from it).

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow has a shmuppy vibe to it, similar to the style present in the recent Iron Sky trailers. I seem to be the only person who likes the movie though.
