Arcade marquee to Facebook cover photo

Post by JBC »

I had a really great idea today, explained by the thread title. The dimensions of arcade marquees aren't usually far off from the 851x315 resolution Facebook accepts for it's timeline covers. Using an image editing program like Photoshop doesn't cause much distortion in the image and can easily clean up some of those low quality scans found around the net.

I'd like to thank the great folks over at artworkmonkey and gamesdatabase for watermarking images with their URL's that not only did they not create but also don't own the rights too, otherwise someone might have gotten some perfectly innocent use out of their faux "high res" images one day. Die by fire.

So anyway, if you would like to participate the idea is too search out some of your favorite arcade marquees in resolutions higher or equal too 851x315, alter that resolution to match, and then use whatever shooping skills you have to clean up and enhance the image to make a sweet Facebook timeline photo. Remember that no one cares what your opinion of Facebook is  It'll be fun to peruse a thread full of retro arcade marquees. Try not to quote images!

Sorry about the watermarks, it just can't be helped sometimes.

Hmmm, Space Odyssey looks kinda like somebody cropped a section out of the intro credit sequence to 1979's The Black Hole.

DJ Boy looks somewhat less racist than expected. STARRING: Hero Boy: Forum Jesus, GP. Guy laid out on ground: ??? Guy laid out on ground #2, with Kierkegaardian hair: Icycalm. Wasted skater in background, right edge: Rob after seeing Play Girls 2. Guy vaulting fire hydrant: mjclark (system11 is the fire hydrant). Skating woman: ???? Tripped clown skater: Hit by spadgy and macaw. Creepy guy looking up from stairs: Yours truly. White car with hood up behind wasted skater at right edge in memory of Robotron.

For the love of God -- original artwork. :? Ancient story, so let's not get into it here. Actually only the DJ Boy one looks bad. I can supply you some scans of flyers but most stuff is vertically oriented which will make it difficult, but some are minimal enough to pull it off.

Wish I looked that cool, Ed. ;)

It bothers me on the St Dragon one. I couldn't find a high res scan of the marquee anywhere else so... it's just such a blight on an otherwise nice piece of artwork :|

Pretty cool idea, not sure I wanna have the Rygar (my favorite arcade game ever) marquee on my Facebook page though (I'm not single and I wanna keep it that way).

LOL, facebook. Is anyone still using this completely useless data-mining time-sink, where you post stuff nobody cares about, "friend" people who aren't your friends and "like" shit because, what's not to like, while helping some narcissistic fucks who disregard your privacy to become billionairs?

(Actually, I never used it in the first place because I'm that awesome).

Nice points Friendly. Add to that the utterly banal statements on walls that get huge amounts of comments - "I baked a cake today!" - 37 comments ensue.
Anything deep gets zilch.
Anyway, this 17yr old Sikh who likes bombs, tec-9s & nuclear fission uses the CIA's Timeline as nothing moar than a msn messenger.
Back to circuitface's thread - Good idea. I'd like to see more marquees.
I'm keeping mine as one of my high score ranking pics though.

No, nobody at all. I read reports of bankruptcy the other day.

Back on topic, mine is a silhouette-esque photo of my son.

I don't use timeline myself (really hate it), but if it becomes mandatory like it was mentioned a while ago, then I'm totally using the Saint Dragon one.

oh man Life Force and Nemesis are beautiful. I never knew that there were Milennium Falcons in Gradius though...

and, yeah Facebook is lame as shit. But whatever. Privacy issues and stuff like that aside, I think it depends on how you use it.

I've perfected the art of filtering through bullshit (see post count, and still going strong). I don't think one should sit around and fap to FB all day. However, as a tool, it can be quite effective. I can stay in the loop on certain hobbies (Indie music -- in just about any part of the world for example) which would take pain staking effort and time otherwise. I'm not 22. I don't have the brain cells to stay out clubbing until noon and go to record stores after like I used to. And now, I don't have to either. I miss that time, and there was something to be said about being cool enough to actually finding a good party/event back then: Tokyo's best club had no sign, nor flyers. But, those days are long gone.

The only social networking I've hated is MySpace b/c of design. I mean seriously, I could go on tirade after tirade of what's wrong w/ forums (and find clear examples here w/o much effort) but that would be stupid. Nothing is full of awesome only. Shit must be waded through.

Like someone else said, Facebook is only as stupid as the person using it. You know it stores your information so don't spill your whole personal life in there like some people do.

Aside from a few pics of mine, my Facebook page is all about random internet images and youtube links. But it's a great tool to stay in touch with family and friends...

I just went back and reactivated my account for similar reasons. It's a pain in the ass trying to keep track of blogs for bands.

However, i used to use it for drunk posting and trolling family. Going to have to change my ways.
I better go through and delete all of my old posts....

Facebook hasn't forced timeline on me yet, but I was thinking to either do an arcade marquee or Darius2 screenshot. Only when it becomes compulsory though, because I think Timeline looks arse.

A quote from another forum I read (about Twitter I believe): Don't judge the usefulness of a tool based on the idiots using it.
