I know I'm not the one to whom the question was posed, but this was also a public post and not a PM, so I'll answer.
mesh control wrote:Gus, how much time do you spend watching/studying replays vs playing/practicing?
It's not about "hours put in" or "time spent doing x". It is completely not about that. If you have to ask this question (it not being out of simple curiosity), you have to find out for yourself just how much time it takes you to learn a stretch of stage by whatever means you're using. If you're just beginning to really become pragmatic and raise your power level, the third_strike methodology is a great gauge to see your strengths and weaknesses. In general, he [used to] work on one stage, with clear goals, for a set period of time (or per day). At the end of the week he would play runs, but just trying to learn stage 3/4 of a CAVE game with stage practice and replays should give you a good idea of where you're at.

In the end, it just comes down to how well you can optimize your practice...
I don't recall anyone else on the forum; aside from sik, being able to pick up a game and begin to tear it apart in a week.
Sikraiken and MrMonkeyMan are both capable of this, among others (Jaimers probably is, too). sik's scores were actually usually done (start to finish, first watch of a replay to last f12 of a screenshot) within a day or two. He watches the replay once or twice, then savestate practices for a couple hours, then tries a run or two. F12, post, done. His idea is making the absolute most of all of his practice time, and he recommends working for consistency. Legitimate or not (no one but him seems to really know for sure ^_~), his methods are basically the best. If you're not sikraiken, practicing stages at a time is probably a better idea.
I'm still convinced my motorskills are garbage and I'm searching for ways to improve.
It's probably not your ability to move your hand, but your ability to decide on how to move before having to move your hand. If you're looking for ways to improve, ask questions and present all the data you can ;) Don't consider this a comprehensive post, either. This is just trying to get a hook inside the armor of the fat son of a bitch that won't die so we can get him off you.

One of the hardest things to remember (also a very important thing to remember, lol) is that you can just take baby steps while putting in time and you will gain shittons of experience and make more progress than if you had played single credits in isolation (even if you have a replay). This is extremely important, and a great thing to keep in mind while working your way up to over 9000.

Tons. I pretty much use the third strike method TLB method of just figuring out 1 stage at a time and picking out a day when to start doing full runs. And yeah, I study the hell out of replays to help me do that. Once I have a route through the game figured out I pretty much make it part of my daily routine to do successful runs through every stage in practice and I've found it also helps my consistency when I do that right before I start some full runs.

That's not true at all for me, actually. I spent the entirety of February just practicing this game.

That's still pretty good. To progress through this game so quickly is quite a feat.

I've personally tried that practice method, but it didn't work for me. It frustrates me to no end grinding levels. I'm currently progressing through the game by credit feeding. After I end a credit I start experimenting with bosses to see if I can figure out any new techniques.

I'm glad to see so much strategy talk on the board recenly. For awhile it was nothing but solid shit posting or maybe I wasn't paying attention.

360 Mode
GUS - 606,948,832 - ALL - Ageha

This fucking game. When I perfected that final pattern... I don't think I've ever felt that way before. Anyway there were a few mistakes in this run, the worst being me autobombing the 4th boss's final but overall this was a pretty good run for me. I feel like taking a quick but this definitely isn't the last of me. I feel like I can beat kawaijb's score if I focus enough.

Just noticed an error in the Arrange table. You have my score as Ageha and not Tateha. It wasn't even possible to play 99*99 as Ageha or Asagi when I did that run. It probably still is impossible to find a replay of it online to watch to get it just due to how much better Tateha is for the mode. I would definitely love to try 99*99 as Ageha and Asagi, but there's no way I have.

Still room for improvement. I finished with 551m, which wasn't far off from the 560m I read kawaijb finished with but I really do need to get better at that final boss because that fight was a fucking disaster.

Arcade (PCB)
marus-MPO - 390,615,082 - Stage 6 - Ageha

This game suddenly made a reappearance in a local arcade, so I've been working on this game again on-and-off for the past couple months. I'm slowly but surely making improvements at the very least.

360 Mode
GUS - 686,915,154 - ALL - Ageha

Really, I gotta thank everyone who supported me along the way. When I picked up this game I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to bother doing it but when I heard you guys say 'you can do it a week' 'I'm looking forward to seeing you do it'... shit was on. Shmups chat and off-topic might get on my nerves sometimes but this board is amazing.

I knew you had it in you.

Now if it's a challenge you want, I dare you to beat probably the best Western record out there (at least in terms of Cave games): Prometheus' DoDonPachi score. In fact, I double dog dare you.

Updated. Congrats, GUS.
Brutal game, for sure. I bought the PCB on release and spent a LOT of fucking time playing it. So much, that I didn't much give a shit when the 360 version came out. That's a lot of credits!

This board is not notifying me when this shit is updated. Feel free to nudge me in PM if I slack.

Congrats to Gus. I agree, if you're really up for a challenge with a Western Record, Prometheus' Dodonpachi Record is seemingly untouchable. What are your thoughts on chaining?

Ok, wow. I didn't expect this many people to care, it ain't that great a score lol. In fact I'm probably just gonna keep going as I could have easily scored over 700m if not a pretty horrible death at the end that stopped me from milking the final boss fully.

Re the DDP suggestion I'd love to try that out or some of the Touhou games but I'm horrible on a keyboard and still don't have a USB pad. I ordered a Hori one from Playasia but I have no idea when I'll get that as it's been backordered forever.

I'll second the DFKBL strong mode suggestion. First western Zatsuza kill? :) Although your score will be lower than if you play power style.

Alternatively, Dimahoo counterstop lolz.

I somehow cocked up the 360 boards w/ the last update. They should be accurate now. If not, lemme know.

Congrats again to GUS for a good score, and to sven666 for a good for him score. ;)
