Questions about tate modes

Post by rCadeGaming »

I'm working a cabinet with an on-the-fly rotatable LCD TV (don't worry, it has under 1 frame of input lag and I'll be using an SLG for 15kHz stuff) and I had a few questions about what I need to support for tate mode. The cabinet is going to support MAME and just about every console from NES to PS3/360, so just about any game you can think of will apply here.

Also, I know that there have been threads like this before. I searched and found a couple, but I think the most recent was three or four years old, so I thought I should make a current one in case of newer games with differences.

1. Which way should the monitor should rotate? With the current TV bracket I can only support 90 degrees of rotation in one direction. I booted up a few Dreamcast games and the game screen rotated clockwise, meaning the monitor must rotate counter-clockwise. In other words, when the TV is sitting horizontal, once the game is switched to vertical the bottom of the screen appears on the left side of the TV. Are there any games that rotate the other way?

2. Are there any vertical games that use the full space space of a 16:9 TV, meaning they're 9:16 instead of the normal 3:4? I'll be playing 3:4 games in letterbox (can't stand stretching/incorrect aspect ratios). I'm planning to design the cabinet so that when the TV is rotated, the black area at the bottom of the letterboxed screen will swing down into a groove in the cabinet. This allows the monitor to not be mounted too high, but would block the view of a game using the full 9:16 display area. Are there any games that use the full 9:16?

1. Yes, some games are rotated clockwise and some are counter-clockwise. You'll probably only need counter though, since MAME rotates things to the current screen rotation anyways, and most (if not all?) console games with tate are counter-clockwise.

2. Akai Katana Shin does, but that's a horizontal shooter. I don't know if there are any that do 9:16, probably not though.

The PS1 Namco Museums (Vols. 1-5 + Encore) are said to rotate their 3:4 games the opposite direction from the majority of console games with tate. But since everything on those discs should be supported in MAME, you can probably just emulate them instead.

You mean the monitor must be rotated counter-clockwise because the game screen is rotated clockwise right? That's how all the Dreamcast games I tried were.

Yup, 16:9 is not a problem, only 9:16, thanks.

BIL, yeah I won't be using any console ports of games that work perfectly in MAME, unless they have improvements, interesting differences, or extra features that I think are worth the purchase. This is the kind of thing I'm looking for though. Thanks, keep 'em coming.

I just thought of something I should add, I'll probably be using an X-RGB mini. Does anyone know if that has the ability to rotate the screen 180 degrees?
