US Navy FA-18 crashed 700 feet from my house today?!

Post by burgerkingdiamond »

I live near NAS (naval air station) Oceana in Virginia Beach. Planes fly over and around my house everyday. Today one crashed 700 feet from my condo!

I was at work when a friend called to let me know how close it was. So I took the rest of the day off and rushed home. It's pretty crazy here right now. The news doesn't know if anyone got hurt yet, but they're saying that both pilots safely ejected.

I snuck past some police lines to take out my trash as an excuse to get a little close. 20 feet from my dumpster there's A BURNT UP EJECTOR SEAT sitting in the grass and the fence that it crashed through. I tried to take a picture but the cops booted me out. The best I could get was a picture of the fence without the ejector seat visible.

A friend of a friend was home when the crash happened. He ran out of his backdoor and helped the pilot out of his ejector seat.

Man this shit is nuts.

I was reading about this earlier. It looks like nobody died, let's hope it stays that way. I'd not run the AC or sniff around outside for a while until somebody says the ejected jet fuel is cleaned up and no problem. Are you going to be forced to stay with a friend, or at a hotel?

Weird, I'm watching your neighbourhood and neighbours being interviewed on the news right now.

Everything is cool at my place. I had to park about 1/2 a mile away at a school and skateboard to my house because they have a bunch of roads closed.

Even though it's so close to my house there's no direct line of sight so I can't see anything. I got pictures from the other side from the main road. They're not very good though.

It's weird to think that if some random variable was slightly changed it could be my house that's totaled and all my belongings fucked. Plus, my upstairs neighbor was home at the time so he would have been toast. He said when it crashed it almost knocked him out of his chair. He grabbed a wad of cash and ran out to his car to get the hell out because he thought some terrorist attack was going down.

It sucks that from my perspective I couldn't get the seat. It's right behind those bushes.

these pilots were fucking bad ass. They landed only 500 ft from the plane, so they ejected last minute.

Fuuuck. Saw this on the news earlier, odd that it happened on the doorstep of someone from the only forum I visit. Glad you didn't have a closer call than you did. We get low-flying craft pretty frequently where I live in the UK, and this scenario has crossed my mind a few times.

It's amazing that no one was killed; the crash site looks like it's in the middle of a residential area.

Kinda wonder what the cause of the crash was. That's an expensive vehicle to lose!

You took the words out of my mouth.

Freaky stuff. Glad no one was killed, shame about the house and stuff though.

EDIT: Yahoo lists 9 as injured but no deaths. Damn. Get well soon guys.

Just heard interviews and whatnot on the BBC World Service driving back to my parents place for the weekend. Crazy stuff.

we have a saying in german "glueck im unglueck" [meaning roughly "being lucky in a misfortune"] - i guess that's fitting here...

wow. If I were a religious man I would call it a miracle. How in fuck's name does a fighter jet crash into an apartment complex and not kill anybody?? Amazing.
