Traffic idiocy

Post by Ruldra »

When two idiots meet on the traffic, shit happens:

Looking forward to the ensuing shitstorm on the news. Woman deserves prison for that (though obviously the biker is also a dick).

A lot of "bad drivers" are actually proficient drivers, but also enormous assholes. The latter tendency can be suppressed during the drive test.

No, we don't have the worst drivers. That title will belong to somewhere in the middle east or asia. What we have are incompetent pussies. People who don't understand the road and are afraid of everything around them. Idiots who sit in the left or middle lane on the 401 blocking traffic. Idiots who don't understand what their signal indicators are for. Idiots who insist on doing 30 km/h less than the flow of traffic. Idiots who parallel, preventing others from passing. And worst of all, idiot politicians who don't understand how traffic works and insist on posting unreasonably slow speed limits, despite the fact that doing so decreases compliance and increases the risk of accidents. My personal favourite is when the province takes a nice, unpaved 80 km/h zone and then paves it, dramatically improving the road conditions to not only make it safer to drive faster, but psychologically encouraging drivers to go faster and then the drops the speed limit to 60 km/h.

When you engineer your roads for 130 km/h, expect that to be the speed people try to drive! Fucking assholes.

Ok, rant over. In regards to the video, the woman in the car attempted vehicular manslaughter and should be extremely punished. The guy on the bike did appear to provoke her with that kick, but it's kind of a moot point considering her reaction.

It was Brazil where that guy smashed through all the cyclists at critical mass last year.

Based on the two pieces of evidence available to me I am forced to conclude that all Brazilian drivers are murderous psychos.

In São Paulo, yes, mostly. Bikers tend to be worse, though. And if you get in trouble with one there's always 20 more swarming you the next instant.

Hell, even cyclists are psychotic assholes around here.

I was in Brazil over Christmas, and traffic definitely felt a lot less safe than in Germany. The Brazilians I was with also thought it was pretty funny that I wanted to wear a seatbelt, like it's some stupid shit only European pussies do. :P

For some reason we don't bother wearing seatbelts when sitting in the back. Heck, I remember a time when no one bothered to wear them in the front seat either.

Japan (ignore cyclists like it's a profession)
Hawaii (everyone is on an island, in their car, on an island)
and I swear to go the worst of all: Korea (Jeez Louise).

What are the laws in Brazil considering bikes inching between cars at stop lights? In Japan it's perfectly legal and expected if your bike can fit, to cut the lines down.

Sometimes, I almost wish I had a James Bond style Aston Martin DB5 with working weapons. I'd find it hard to resist riddling someone's car with a few rounds from front grille machineguns if they pulled out in front of me too close. Tailgaters just suck. Caltrops droppers would be nice to use on them.

Road rage that escalates to violent action should be a capital offense or a severe felony at the least. New South Wales, Australia has a good idea: it is called Predatory Driving and carries penalties of up to 5 years in jail and a 100000 AUD fine. Even chasing someone is PD.

I'm against increasing the speed limits from 65 MPH to 70. Those who already speed could see it as a license to speed even more. "I don't get busted for 75 in a 65, so when it's up to 70 I'll do 80". Let the limits stand at 65.

I'm not 100% convinced this is real. Sure it looks like it happened but the one thing that makes me think twice is how smoothly the camera is moving; Now i'm not saying it's impossible but I find it unlikley that an ordinary person is trundling around the city with a steadycam. tehy're not cheap and it's professional filming equipment - just watch as he gets out of the car how little shake there is in the picture.

i'm actually learning to drive at the moment. it does scare me when i take the road and see so many people who have passed their driving test act like complete morons on the road. but hey, as long as i don't fcuk up during the test itself, i should be fine.

as for that video: i don't know about you, but whoever the driver of that car was would probably have suffered from some serious gbh afterwards. i'm actually surprised that the biker walked away when he did (even if he was a clown).

The thing about Brazil is that they have an excellent legal system and very good legislation to regulate everything, however... nobody gives a shit and nobody's there to enforce the laws either.

I've been to Korea, and traffic there is bad, but it's not like Brazil. I met some Brazilians from Brasília (planned city built for motor vehicle traffic) and they said they will not drive in the cities on the coast, because they consider it too crazy.

Pretty much every time I turned on the TV in Brazil they would show the aftermath of some spectacularly gruesome car accident on the news. I wonder why people don't draw the connection. :|

Not sure how watching people die is amusing. :?

Chinese people don't know what the fuck cars are, I swear, like they're these things that suddenly appeared in the last twenty years. When I first went there it looked like organised chaos, everyone just wandering into busy streets with cars miraculously slowing down to let them by, and thousands of cyclists rolling alongside the traffic.

The result of peasant population to economic superpower in just twenty years I suppose; the lackadaisical mindset is still catching up.

Bikes are free to lane split as much as they want. When the traffic legislation was being made, they wanted to forbid lane splitting, but the president at the time decided to remove that bit from the law. Now they want to add it again because it's a fucking mess now, especially in São Paulo. They break your mirrors when passing through and if you complain, there's a good chance they'll kick your car like the biker in the OP.

Behold, the flamethrower car. This is not fake, it was actually sold in South Africa to prevent car hijacks.

Pretty much. Lack of enforcement is a big problem around here and it's the main reason why people simply don't care.

I heard that China now has cars.
But obviously no driving schools or enforcement of them.

As for the woman in the car that tries to kill the biker in Brazil- that is intent to kill for sure. I know he did a small provoke, but still....

I take it you're not a fan of Top Gear
Personally I think that road safety is more about skilled drivers than setting low speed limits to gain more speeding ticket revenue from drivers.

You may think that's what happens, but it's really not. A fine example of this is the speed limit increase that occurred on the Ohio Turnpike. Before the limit was increased from 65mph to 70 mph the Commander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol went on a huge rant about how this will increase the number of fatalities and accidents. Yet in actual fact the average speed of traffic only rose from 74mph to 76mph. 3 mph less than the actual increase. Even with some drivers hitting 80mph the number of accidents decreased from the same time last year.

Some more fun facts:
- The Average amount by which traffic was speeding dropped from 9.9mph to 6.6mph
- A sample of 50 cars showed that the 50th percentile was 76mph, the 85th percentile would be about 79pmh.
- 2011 saw the lowest number of fatalities ever on the turnpike.

And who says 80 is any less safe than 70? The fact of the matter is that the speed your travelling on it's own has very little to do with road safety. What matters is the design speed of the road and the relative speed of traffic. Studies repeatedly show than your average driver will drive a consistant speed on a road based solely on conditions. Set the speed limit lower than this natural speed and people will feel like they're driving unnecessarily slow. This creates tension, leads to less compliance with the speed limit, great variances in traffic speed and as a result, more accidents. This may not sound right to you, but it's a repeatedly provable fact both in experiments and the real world. That's why 85th percentile rule exists.

yeah that all sounds right. I set my cruise control to 71 everyday to/from work (speed limit is 55). And pretty much everyone goes at least as fast. It's very simple minded to just equate speed with increased danger.

Most motorcycle accidents happen at intersections, not highways for example. Speed isn't a factor there, it's people not paying attention and pulling out right in front of you. It happened to me about 4 days ago. I was 2 blocks from my house and only going about 25 when this bitch pulled out right in front of me. I had to slam on my brakes and the bike started fishtailing. I barely missed her.
