MAME Cabinet: Vertical

Post by finisherr »

Anyone on here build a MAME/console cabinet to accommodate vertical STGs? Just curious. I was just entertaining the idea of building one at some point so I guess I'm looking for inspiration.

In the out-of-print book titled "Project Arcade" by author John St. Clair, it has some plans of vertical based full sized & mini Mame cabs to build. Now if you're looking to build a Japanese styled candy cab with support for vertical games, that's another story. It can be done. I bought this aforementioned book with the idea of building my own mini Mame cab (but decided that it would be better to just buy a Japanese candy cab instead). After patronizing a few Japanese game centers back in early 2000, it wasn't too hard to make that ultimate decision of getting a Japanese cab. It was trying to find the right person at the right time to sell me one which almost didn't happen but by pure luck, it went quite smoothly.

I just figured out how to add scanlines to mame by creating a scanline.png and loading it into the configuration file. Looks pretty neat. With that said, I'll probably just settle on getting a rotatable LCD monitor and a nice stick. Paired with my speakers, that'll be a pretty cool experience I gather.

I built a bartop arcade machine exactly for that - it turned out the greatest console/ gaming thing/ whatever I have ever owned; thing is you can build it to your exact specifications, so the viewing angle will be perfect, the button layout, the height of the joystick etc.

Saint's book is great, but despite its being very useful you don't really need it strictly speaking; just go to

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/

(Saint's messageboard) and read up. People there are generally very helpful and there's shitloads of other projects described in detail.

Do it man you won't regret it! :!:

Wow, so I just played the MAME rom of Futari Black Label for the first time on my tated CRT. Looks SO much better that my 360 version. Might consider building a mame/console cab of sorts after all.

Yet it will play no where near as "authentically" as the 360 version.

If you have a CRT you can make the 360 version look just as authentic as the PCB version. So you have all the gains and non of the pains that you will have with the current MAME versions.

The 360 version is far superior in every way.

I'm generating some rudimentary ideas. The more I think about it the more I want to do it. Especially now that I have a good CRT TV. When the time is right...

If you've built a cab I'd definitely be interested in seeing pics. I'm kinda obsessing.

here's one example

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.p ... c=117512.0

It's small because it's for the dude's kid, but I think it would be good as a sit down cab. I would love to build one of these myself, but I already have 3 cabs so I'd have to get rid something first.
