Sonic Wings (aka Aero Fighters)

Post by Mero »

This is the cheap 'n' cheerful high score thread for the first instalment of Video Systems arcade stg quadrilogy, Sonic Wings (aka Aero Fighters).

EDIT 3:
Perikles wrote: Every character goes to the second loop in the SFC version Sonic Wings, the US release Aero Fighters on the other hand consists of one loop regardless of the character.
EDIT 4: Rabio plays an extra stage in both the SNES and SFC versions, Rabio scores now seperated from the rest for this reason.
One credit only, all defaults etc. Be sure to state which version you're playing.

Told you I'd submit! It's pathetic though - but at least you have some company!

PCB:
spadgy - 261,500 - 1-5 - Hien

This game is great - why aren't more people submitting here? I might get my PCB installed in place of the Fightoing Hawk one at Casino.

EDIT: Slightly better score! Died twice in a row in about 3 seconds on the level five boss, ending my game just before the kill!

spadgy - 325,200 - 1-5 - Hien

What's the deal with the city-stage with all the buildings to destroy? Do you only get that as Kohful?

The random stages aren't totally 'random' - certain characters get certain stages everytime, but in a random order. The character you're using now must not get that stage. Try out a few of the different characters and don't forget the ones on the 2P side. Some of the planes are just too weak IMO.

It's a good enjoyable game, if a little easy. After a bit of practice you'll clear the first loop with ease :)

Thanks for the tips! Sadly what is 'easy' for many still makes a fool out of me!

Small improvement:

Knowing preemptively where to use your bombs will help you. I always use bombs in the same places in every run:

Level 5 boss - you already know about this one, when the boss is near death use a bomb when he comes down to the bottom of the screen and sprays bullets everywhere.
Level 6 boss - I can dodge the first plane's attacks for a while but when he comes too close I use a bomb to get rid of him before the 2nd plane turns up. The 2nd jet plane comes close and point blanks you straight away, bomb then and he should go down quickly.

Level 7 mid-boss - This bastard will fuck up your run if you don't get it right. Take out the gun emplacement on the right (or left - either way's good) before the boss gets going to make it a bit easier. Tge mid-boss will start flying around and fire some waves of large round bullets at you. Stay between them and when second wave is going past you use a bomb to save yourself from his next attack (Kohful cannot use 1 bomb immediately after another, hence you need to do it at the right moment). Then he'll start using an attack that's much easier to deal with and you can easily finish him off.
Level 7 boss - All I can say is just stay alive by any means neccesary and bomb when you need to. Losing a life on the final boss is not a good idea as you'll have to go through the rest of the figt on minimum shot power. And pray that you get the missile boss instead of the monkey - the monkey is significantly harder and is worth less points.

I've written you a bit of an essay here  On the update

Thanks for all this - I'll tackle it again tonight and see how I do! Right now I'm still bomb spamming at the 1-5 boss, so I've a way to go!

Is the rabbit massively over powered? I'd argue that even if that's the case, there's good reason to allow that 'ship' here, as there is such a diversity of power in the standard vehicles. And we have a separate SNES table thanks to Mero.

I spent last night trying the P2 characters, only to discover the Kohful is the one for me. Mao would be great if I had the skill to handle her speed.

Finally finished this fierce game in one credit.

SNES Version
tinotormed - 595,100 - ALL - Rabio

The fact is if you are playing as Rabio, you'll only play all 8 stages instead of the usual 14 with every regular character. And playing this character is really easy, but requires some memorization of all stages.

So if you play as Rabio, you only play one loop? What's the 8th level?

EDIT: Ignore that, I understand what you mean now.

Good work.

Quick question: On your PCB, when you collect power ups when you're already at maximum power, are they worth 1000 or 2000?

Good question! The are worth 2000 each so i have the Japanese Sonic Wings AF version.

I just tried the jap sonic wings on mame and it is much easier than my version of the game.

Sounds like your PCB has both versions of the game on it :?

You'd probably be better off asking this question in the Hardware section of the forum, people know their PCB's in there
