Help with the new AVGN Movie

Post by ancestral-knowledge »

Hello guys,

i don't want to promote or anything but a friend of mine just informed me that the donations for the upcoming AVGN movie will be over in about 60 hours. As a guy who always enjoyed his show completely for free over the past years i thought it would be a good idea to inform you of that too. I'm very excited about this one.

So you begin by stating that you "don't want to promote or anything" and then proceed to do just that?

I always found AVGN to be entertaining based on the topic, not really the persona. Basically it's just fun to watch people curse at bad NES games for about 10 minutes. Can't really imagine a feature length deal based on it. Then again, I was entertained for every second of Plinkett's massive reviews.

The Plinkett reviews are brilliant and satisfying. AVGN is sophomoric, but still often enjoyable.

What I dont like about his site are all of the non-AVGN, self-serving stuff thats basically him and his friends playing with Ninja Turtles and passing it off as something other people are supposed to enjoy watching. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my friend would be hogging the NES and have me just watch him play. Lot of fun that is!

LOL, I remember shit like that. I'd go over my cousin's house and they be all like, "i'll let you play as soon as I beat this level" or "here, lemme kill this boss for you real quick" (and they never give back the controller)

If I thought it would be responsible of me right now I would donate as I'm not a hater and can appreciate it when someone is at least putting forth the effort to do something instead of nothing.

Besides, AVGN is always good for a laugh. Best theme song ever and his Deadly Towers review has some real next-level moments.

Great, he's gonna target the mass market by smashing a SNES. Fuck that, get a Famiclone at least. Hell, with the money they've raised they could commission a new clone system!

How much will it cost to get footage of Van Helsing calling AVGN "THE DEVIL'S CONCUBINE?"

People who break stuff for entertainment are the worst. In one episode he breaks like 2 Sega 32x systems; granted, it's a dogshit console, but goddamn.

He will do it like Wayne's World -- not just stretch a sketch into movie length, but show the world around the sketch.

What really baffles me is the fact so many people actually think he is just going to make movie lenght review. Many seem to confuse James Rolfe and the nerd character to be same exact person but AVGN is really just that - a character. James himself seems much more composed and down-to-earth kind of guy who is very passionate about movies and that is something I can appreciate. You may not like his more vulgar work but his actual movie reviews and retrospectives are quite informative - the annual Halloween-special Monster Madness is always a highlight of the month for me.

Yes, just like how many people confuse the Keith Apicary character with Nathan Barnatt and take the Keith character seriously, as at least a handful of people on this forum apparently do. Like his episode on shmups, people on here were apparently expecting an intelligent tribute to the genre, but instead they saw a nerd character talking out his ass about stupid crap. Sorry, you won't see a brilliant analysis of Ikaruga, you're just going to see him dressing up in a cardboard box robot suit and hitting a city bus with poster tubes.

I too enjoy his annual Monster Madness leading up to Halloween.

I remember reading somewhere that he scored the part as the cop that gets mauled in the remake of Ed Woods - Plan 9 From Outer Space? Did that ever happen?

I like AVGN generally, it's a nice nostalgia trip and amusingly put together. The film you linked is okay. It's touching, but a bit cheesy and amateurish, and Rolfe's facial expressions are obviously theatrical.

The gushing comments underneath are so cringeworthy though:
"All of your serious videos really inspire me as a person, to do what I want to do (I'm a writer), and find what I want in life. I guess what I'm trying to say, James, for everyone here, is thank you. And good luck. We all consider ourselves your friends, and you should call on us whenever you need help with anything. We're behind you."
Puke.

My favorite is this one. It does a great job of showing how ridiculous the completist NES collectors are.
Even if I had money to spare I don't think I would donate to the AVGN movie as he's already reached and surpassed his fundraising goal. It's a shitty attitude I guess but James already has enough fans to fund his efforts.

I think AVGN is terrible. I think Yahtzee is funny, but his efforts at serious criticism under the mask of funny frequently whiff badly. I like the Classic Game Room guy. He has a nice, gentle, natural sense of humour.

I find James Rolfe's humor to be hit and miss. I actually enjoyed his reviews of classic horror films more than AVGN eventually, since the former started to get better, while the latter declined.

Let me get this straight: AVGN wants people to DONATE money (not invest and get a share of profits) so he can make a movie which will then make HIM money. I see.

I'd pay for a Classic Game Room movie, if only to find out what happened to Dave and that chick cohost all the nerds ran off. Hopefully Mohammed (from Qatar) makes a cameo.

That's how you know when someone loves something that deeply---when they can make the most mundane aspects of it seem interesting. Unlike the majority of videogame review/discussion shows, Mark doesn't have to ever break character once its over. Even the rare moments where he lays into a game (see the infamous Ridge Racer 7 review which, imo, may be the best angry video review i've seen anyone do), you feel his genuine disdain for the game and its mechanics, without having to resort to excessive profanity or childish theatrics. Its only when he tries hard to be funny that he falls flat (Heyzoos the coked-up chicken).
