What is your dream game?

Post by JBC »

I think every gamer dreams up some perfect game for themselves at some point. I do this often, and sometimes I even piece them together in my head at night when I lay down to sleep because it's so relaxing to think about. I find them very easy to focus on, and before long all other thoughts will be drowned out and I'll lull off. I guess it makes the words 'dream game' even more fitting then.

I have many ideas, but one of my dream games I like to focus on is a camp counselor simulation set at Camp Crystal Lake. It's sort of like the Friday the 13th NES game, but works.

I think the main draw for me is the idea of this huge world, with just you and this massive stalker chasing each other around. I like to imagine Crystal Lake rendered as a beautiful natural landscape with a real time night & day cycle, weather effects, and an entire ecosystem thriving in the waters and forest. Recognizable locations from the movies would be peppered throughout the surrounding area, with the titular lake of course being in the center.

You would only have so many teens to burn through, and only so much time to stop Jason before he kills everyone. Since he's indestructible, you have to find a creative way to stop him and no one thing is ever guaranteed to keep him down for long. In the end, you will always die but the objective is to last as long as possible with the fewest casualties.

Each time Jason is defeated he reawakens, stronger & angrier at you than before. Every object can be interacted with in a fully realized fashion, allowing for the creation of traps. Jason may be retarded, but he isn't stupid! So he would also be creating weapons and traps for you and the other counselors.

There would be a scoring system in place tallied by survival time, # of rescues, % of damage done to Jason, and victories over him resulting in hibernation. As well, countless trophies awarded for creative thinking.

In sticking with tradition, your counselor will lose his/her clothes 8)

For difficulties sake I would split the game into hours, and you would checkpoint only twice per hour of survival. No whining! If you survive through exactly 24 hours of gameplay (It always begins at midnight, on Friday the 13th) then you will 'win' by earning the title of 'Last Girl' and unlock Jason mode, the 2nd half of the game wherein the objective is pretty much self explanatory. It would be an amazing award to suddenly empower the player after having to gruel through literally 24 hours of extremely difficult fight or flight. I'd try to balance it out to where it would be possible to put him down once an hour, but by the 24th hour he would be in that ridiculous mode where no matter how far or fast you run he's right behind you or just ahead. I wouldn't forget Pamela either, a third mode starring her would basically be Hard difficulty for Jason mode, since she can only die once.

I think the tagline would be 'One life. One enemy. No chance.'

Now, what is your dream game?

You left out the part where your rank goes up for smoking pot and having premarital sex.

Go play the original version of Aliens vs Predator for the PC. You can get it cheap off gamersgate.

I have two dream games, actually.

1) This one is like a shmup, but in reverse. You're an overlord and a ship is coming to destroy you. You need to set up your forces to make sure the ship is destroyed before it gets to you.

- The game is set up similar to Rayforce. The enemy ship is coming from space and needs to get to the core of the planet to reach you.
- The ship has 3 lives, bombs and shield. It can also powerup itself on special circunstances.
- The forces available to you depends on how far they are to the planet's core. At orbit, you have only weak ships at your disposal, but at the core you can use your strongest units.
- You can use carriers to greatly powerup nearby units, but they drop a powerup item for the enemy if it gets destroyed.
- You have 5 special units to serve as midbosses. You can use each of them on each stage, or you can fuse one or more of them to become a stronger boss, at the cost of having less of them available for use. So you can have 5 midbosses or 1 super midboss, for example.
- You are free to build the bosses and make their attacks. Weapons available for them are machineguns, missiles, lasers and bombs. Plus one superweapon, like a giant laser, a huge missile pod, etc.

This game probably sounds nice in theory but I'm guessing it'd be too easy to break. Players would eventually find a way to destroy the ship on the very first stage and ruin the whole thing. Maybe it could be solved by adding more enemy ships.

I'm leaving now, tomorrow I'll post my second game.

Sounds a bit like Gratuitous Space Battles in concept. I'd say the concept would work better if you were setting up the enemies, then you were the one attacking, and make it a competition to see who can make the most difficult formations and clear them.

Well, it goes without saying that the game would be full of it :)

MOAR VISUAL NOVELS

Actually, I'd like to have a game with many mini-games: it comes bundled with a little bit of shoot-'em-up action, run-and-gun, Qix-styled puzzles, visual novel, rail gun, fighting, and little bits of RPG. Lots of animation, lots of stills, and crazy action and wacky/tongue-in-cheek, pop cultural humour.

My second game:

This concept was used already in Rad Mobile and NFS The Run - A race across the entire USA with 100 competitors. The winner will get a prize of 100 million dollars.

But instead of being a pure racing game, this one has management elements to it. You need to watch out for your car. If a tire goes flat, you need to stop and replace it. If something breaks, you need to fix it. If you crash your car beyond repair, it's game over.

There is a main route, which has plenty of car maintenance garages to fix or refuel your car, and there are alternative routes that works as a shortcut but you need to fix your car yourself if something goes wrong while you're there. At each checkpoint you choose if you're going the main route or the alternative one.

There are plenty of checkpoints, but there are also Special Checkpoints. At each SC it eliminates the last 10 competitors. If you're among the first 10 to reach it, you get a bonus to your budget, depending on your position.

At the start of the game, you have an initial budget, which you use to buy a car, upgrade its parts, pay for its maintenance and hire crew members. The initial budget varies with the difficulty level.

Crew members help you along the way. They can provide services like fast refueling and fixing at maintenance garages, scan the road ahead for possible shortcuts, and info on the other competitors.

And finally, because it'd be too easy to savescum your way through the game, your savefile is deleted if you lose, like a roguelike.

Final score is your prize money + remaining budget.

A sequel to Omega Boost.

And it seems it could be happening soon under the shape of Strike Suit Zero...

I think the other one would be a mega-RTS with the scale of Supreme Commander but even more units and the conflict taken to solar-system levels. The Dawn of War series tried something like this but I always felt it could've been way, way better.

edit: man, those typos are breaking my english...

Most literally - Rez. I dreamt (in my sleep) about a game looking a lot like it way in the last century, except the playable thingy was more of a spaceship than a "character".
Furthermore, the games closest to the stuff of my dreams are Chelnov (with autofire), Apocalypse starring Bruce Willis (with analogue sticks), Blood Will Tell (once you obtain the dash technique). There's more , but those three kinda set the mark for now.

A modern era WRPG like Vampire: Bloodlines, only based on Mage: The Awakening.

Rather than pick a clan, you start out as a Mage path, then your actions and dialogues can align you to one of the Mage factions(Guardians of the Veil, Mysterium, Adamantine Arrow, etc.).

But I'd be happy with more modern era games, period.

There's an RTS based on the Legend of the Galactic Heroes anime/manga that attempts this. No idea how it turned out, though.

A game that is the result of someone giving Yagawa an infinite supply of money and instructions to make something with gameplay that would frustrate and enrage even his biggest fans and a visual style that would make people who actually genuinely liked that of Pink Sweets say "man that is pretty garish do you really need all those bright colours?".

The first edition would come with a free session with a psychotherapist and based on that Yagawa would write you a personalised letter explaining why you suck that you could look at every time you died.

I dont care if its an FPS, MMO or some sort of Grand Theft Auto sandbox thing - it will be some sort of space game like Star Wars, Star Trek or Macross. The difference will be that all ingame assets exist within the same persistent environment - that is to say that there will be no 'loading next area' as you transition between your character, your vehicle/spaceship or your ship's interior. Everything exists in the same environment - kinda like Star Wars Battlefront only much more ambitious.

Have you played Jak II? The most ambitious
"loadingless" game known to me (considering it runs on the humble PS2, that is; the stuff it pulls off is incredible).

I'll check those, but they don't seem to have a complex fighting system (something with hard execution rivaling that of a fighting game like KOF or Guilty Gear). Anyways thanks for the recommendations.
