Best Top 5 Old Skool Shoot Em Up's On Recent Systems???

Post by lettuce »

What are considered to be the best top 5 shoot em ups for the main gaming system of the past say 15 years, im talking about old school type shoot em ups, not these new bullet hell type. I put some out there in no order and see if theres any gems im missing.....

SNES
1. Axelay
2. R-Type 3: Third Lightning
3. Space Megaforce/Super Aleste
4. UN Squadron
5. Gradius 3/Parodius

MegaDrive
1. Thunderforce IV
2. Zero Wing
3. Musha
4. Twin Hawk
5. Darius 2

Playstation
1. R-Type Delta
2. Raiden Project
3. RayStorm
4. Gradius Gaiden
5. Thunder Force V

Sega Saturn
1. Radiant Silvergun
2. Gunbird
3. Metal black
4. Sonic Wings
5. Battle Garegga

DreamCast
1. Ikaruga
2. Under Defeat
3. Bangai-O
4. GigaWing
5. Zero Gunner 2

Playstation 2
1. Gradius 5
2. R-Type Final
3. Raiden 3
4. Thunder Force VI
5. Giga Wings Generations

So what current gen systems have these type of shoot em ups on them, i know the 360 has Raiden 4 and Raiden Fighters Aces but any others?

Your SNES list isn't bad.
SNES
1. Axelay
2. R-Type 3: Third Lightning
3. Space Megaforce/Super Aleste
4. UN Squadron
5. Gradius 3/Parodius
I would swap one of them out for Biometal.

DreamCast
1. Ikaruga
2. Under Defeat
3. Bangai-O
4. GigaWing
5. Zero Gunner 2
I would swap out Under Defeat for Border Down .

SNES
1. Axelay September 11, 1992
2. R-Type 3: Third Lightning December 10, 1993
3. Space Megaforce/Super Aleste April 28, 1992
4. UN Squadron 07/26/91
5. Gradius 3/Parodius December 21, 1990/1992

MegaDrive
1. Thunderforce IV July 24, 1992
2. Zero Wing 31 May 1991
3. Musha December 21, 1990
4. Twin Hawk June 23, 1990
5. Darius 2 1990

now what makes a system being part of said period?

Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Battle Garegga, and Gigawing don`t really strike me as "old skool." You might consider instead the Cotton games, Zanac Neo, Rayforce, and maybe Strikers 1945 etc.

Despite the slow start, I'd say Gynoug woukd have to make a MegaDrive top 5. Some proto-hell patterns on the last two levels, as well as some of the best graphical effects seen on the platform.

As far as PS2 goes, TF VI shouldn't be in best top 5 of anything as it is the very very poorest of the franchise, ditto R-Type Final even if this means only a top 3...
...I spose no one could describe Radilgy and Trizeal as old skool but they're not bullet-hell either and far far superior :D

Radilgy is bullet hell, but not TriZeal.

SNES

4. UN Squadron
5. Gradius 3/Parodius
Bio-Metal has already been listed. I would definitely drop UN Squadron/Area 88 and Gradius 3 from the list.
lettuce wrote: MegaDrive

2. Zero Wing
3. Musha
4. Twin Hawk
5. Darius 2
Really? Zero Wing? If we're going with a ToaPlan pick, then V V/Grind Stormer makes a hell of lot more sense. I'd definitely drop Twin Hawk and Darius 2/Sagaia in favour of Eliminate Down and Gley Lancer.

Another thing that should be stated is that the term old-skool becomes redundant when talking about shmups released on these consoles... and how do you forget the PC Engine/TurboGrafx?
lettuce wrote: Playstation
1. R-Type Delta
2. Raiden Project
3. RayStorm
4. Gradius Gaiden
5. Thunder Force V
RayStorm and TFV really don't belong on the list. Alternatives like Zanac Neo and Strikers 1945 Part 2 have already been mentioned (and God I hate to list this, but also Einhander).
lettuce wrote: Sega Saturn
1. Radiant Silvergun
2. Gunbird
3. Metal black
4. Sonic Wings
5. Battle Garegga
It's already been mentioned, both Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga don't belong on the list (and drop Sonic Wings as well). You're better off going with any of the following: Batsugun, Sokyuugurentai, Layer Section/Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, Sengoku Blaede or Cotton 2/Cotton Boomerang.
lettuce wrote: DreamCast
1. Ikaruga
2. Under Defeat
3. Bangai-O
4. GigaWing
5. Zero Gunner 2
Ikaruga and GigaWing definitely class as bullet-hell and don't belong on the list. Bangaio doesn't either, but that's more to do with how we define our genre. As has been mentioned; Trizeal, Twinkle Star Sprites (unconventional, but still worth consideration) and maybe Border Down (I'd consider it closer to bullet hell) or Gunbird 2 (this one probably steps well into bullet hell territory though).
lettuce wrote: Playstation 2
1. Gradius 5
2. R-Type Final
3. Raiden 3
4. Thunder Force VI
5. Giga Wings Generations
Aside from G5, the whole list is fraudulent. Better possibilities include any of the Psikyo Collections (Dragon Blaze, Strikers 1945 parts 1 & 2, Gunbird 1 & 2, Sengoku Aces & Blaede), Trizeal, The Double Shooting Shienryu or Twinkle Star Sprites La Petite Princess (again, unconvetional but a good choice).

360:
Eschatos
Shooting Love 200X (inlcudes Trizeal and Exzeal)
Seisou Kouki Strania (XBLA)
Raystorm HD (XBLA, also on PSN)
Both Otomedius games (although I'm sure everyone will bitch about how lacklustre they are)

For the most part I agree with Kiken's recommendations, although I haven't played Eliminate Down or Gley Lancer so my Megadrive/Genesis list would look something like this.

1) MUSHA
2) Thunderforce 3 or 4
3) Hellfire
4) Truxton or Raiden Trad
5) Crying/Biohazard Battle or Darius 2

As you can see there are too many I like to choose only 5.

Saturn is also tricky because there are countless worthwhile games, maybe...

1) Layer Section or Batsugun
2) Soukyugurentai
3) Gunbird or Strikers 1945
4) Hyper Duel
5) Darius Gaiden or Thunderforce 5 (many dislike it, but I think it's great)

Totally spaced Parodius......and Gaiares.

Add those to my picks. While we're at it, don't forget Salamader, Gradius, and Twinbee Deluxe packs.

I never really got what people see in Trizeal, as it seemed kinda bland to me. What's the appeal exactly?
