I'm new to this site but I need help with finding a game (which btw I've been looking for many years) I thought this site might be of help. Alright, all I can remember about the game is that it was around the time of the snes. I think it was for either the snes or the genesis. It was a vertical shoot em up. The general area was space. But the one thing about the game was that you could customize your weapon to a very great degree. I think you could choose from 16 or more different weapons..
Any help would much be appreciated, thanks.

16 or more weapons definitely sounds like Strike Gunner STG. I think Space Megaforce would be more well-known.
You select the special weapon at the beginning of the level, right? That's Strike Gunner STG.

So I tried all the games that you guys suggested but I don't think those are it. It was close to strike gunner but not as simplistic. What games are close to that one?

Xenon 2 maybe, that had a shop between levels.
Super Strike Gunner really does sound like it fits the bill though.

Are you absolutely sure it was a Genesis/SNES game? Having lots of customisation sounds like Tyrian to me.

Guys, there are like 10 types of threads on shmups forum. If we just stickied all the redundant newbie recommendation/Dodonpachi flamewar threads we'd be deprived of half the forum's post volume. Same with these threads
