I grew up during the Commodore 64 era, so i got used to waiting five plus minutes in some cases. It takes a lot of load time before I get too upset. I don't play a lot on PS1 or Saturn, but the shmups are good enough that it's worth it. At least most of them are!kevenz wrote:98PaceCar: Nice collection.... I still don't know how you have the patience to play games on saturn or playstation 1..... it's like 50% loadings screen and 50% gameplay
Don't get me wrong, I bought a sega saturn at launch.... I think september 1995... for $500. It was a great system but it's cd unit is so slow. I bought Umk3 in 1996 and before each match it took like 12 seconds of loadings.
I sure was patient back then, now since I hit the 30ies...... I have none, that's why I play my shooters on quad-core Mame instead
Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?

I actually think it's mostly nostalgia talking. I played a lot of them along with Milestone's games when I was first giving the genre a look and thought the series sucked.MrChiggins wrote: Haha I never have played a Thunder Force game. A lot of people seem to hold most of the series in high regard... especially IV and V. To be honest they never looked that fun to me but there's probably something I'm missing and wouldn't get until I play one of them.

Probably getting my Astro City from Dave_K. That was a fun day, and as it was only a couple months ago, the excitement lives on everytime I power her up...
I was also blown away by the beauty of dual-res monitor on the Cyberlead I got from stuffmonger, but that was more of an unexpected revelation. More than any single game purchase, these two things have enhanced my shmupping experience.

Hey everybody: My Souky came in! About as fun as I imagined it would be harharhar

Same here. I remember thinking it was surreal that people were bitching about CD-ROM load times! Though, I do understand why someone would still rather have a cartridge version of a game.98PaceCar wrote: I grew up during the Commodore 64 era, so i got used to waiting five plus minutes in some cases. Most exciting shmup purchase: Under Defeat. I used to drool over screenshots on system16.com, thinking that there was no way it'd ever get a home release. I liked Zero Gunner 2 at the time, and this game looked like it might be comparable. Well, it finally came, and lived up to all my crazy expectations

I see a lot of people talking about Souky. I love that game. If there is anything Raizing consistently nails, it's tight level design with lots of variety.

I also forgot to mention Raiden III, R-Type Final, and Gradius V. Since I quickly spotted them, I instantly bought those games.

My most exciting purchase was vicariously. My pen pal in Japan bought Radiant Silvergun for me used, in mint condition, for 3,000 yen back in 1999 or so. She mailed it to me, along with Asuka 120%, and I paid her back for them. I ended up marrying her a couple years later.

Futari PCB. Easy choice.

One of the first things I bought for my ST-V. Maybe I should give it some more time.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:The arcade ST-V version of Souky ain't too shabby either.

5 minutes for a commodore 64 game? damn... was it on audio cassette ?
I didn't experienced much pc games in the 80s.... always been a console guy, my first machine was atari 2600 and there was zero load times.
I saw a video of someone playing Street Fighter 2 on ZX spectrum I think and it took like 10 minutes to finally play the game...... in yellow and white at 5 fps...., uhhh....

Definitely Mars Matrix with my Dreamcast, which was about 2 years ago.
Unfortunately the Dreamcast died last month. I have the PCB, but IMO owning a cab/PCBs isn't worth it.

Definitely the 360 port of Deathsmiles. First Cave game I ever bought.
