Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
Four Kings on NG+ are destroying me over and over again at SL 90 with Elite Knight +9, except for Black Leather Trousers +9, Eagle Shield +10 and either Winged Lightning Spear +5 or Quelaag Fury Sword +5 (with about 33 in dex). I have been trying the pyro route which worked on the first run but they are ruthless with knocking you out of casting. Maybe I need to upgrade some serious heavy armour, a bad ass big weapon and try and tank them that way. Either way I think I will be doing some level grinding as noone seems to be helping out on that boss at my level.
Sucks as I want to join the Darkwraiths shortly and so can't talk to Frampt to open up the boss doors. Maybe I will take a trip to the bottom of the Tomb of Giants and farm some humanity and souls on the skellies.
In general I am happy with the patch details due to the fact that I heavily relied on on Iron Flesh late game on a first run and it is really OP if I am honest with myself.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
Oh yea Four Kings are definitely bastards in NG+. They take so little damage from everything you have to attack non-stop to avoid getting ganged up on. It's the only fight you can't take slow and careful; you either all-out blitz or die. And since they deal tons of extra damage, an all-out blitz is hard to pull off. Four Kings NG+ is basically THE fight in Dark Souls; if you can beat them, there's nothing else that will cause you any trouble.
I've never seen a player summon symbol in New Londo Ruins, at any level. People must avoid that area.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
I saw three different souls signs in front of the fog before The Abyss. I'm around level 106.
Since NG+ wouldn't make any difference in sign appearance, they would still show up if you're within range.

Just about to take on Bed of Chaos. Fighting dinosaurs was goddamn boring. Basically after this the two areas (before the final area) I really haven't touched are Duke's archives and Ash Lake.
Really want to finish this before a) new patch b) skyrim.

If you've already taken on Izalith, Duke's should be a breeze. Definitely ne of the cooler areas of the game, too, despite sort of pissing me off at first.

Over the space of a few hours last night I saw a ton of summon signs outside the abyss. Every one of them failed. Sigh. Guess I will try again tonight.

Made it to the bonfire in Blight Town. I desperately need to get the hell out of there. The framerate drops are consistently staggering. Hopefully that's the only area in the game of its kind.

Just found a whip. I just might have to level that puppy up and add fire to it in order to complete a roleplay as Castlevania 3D.

Is there more than one whip in the game? I only got the one in the painted world, that requires you to be unhollowed to fight its owner.

I expect my copy of the 360 version to arrive very soon. Hopefully the 360 version gets patched by the time I get it.
According to the wiki, there are two whips.Sumez wrote:Is there more than one whip in the game? I only got the one in the painted world, that requires you to be unhollowed to fight its owner.

The one in the painted world is the barbed whip.
I'm going to get stoned and play Dark Souls as a real life simulator.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
Word is that neither of the whips are particularly good. I understand the love, and it's clear why they put it in the game, but I think you might be tossing chunks at a weapon that will never be that good.
That said, check it out though, maybe you'll love it's move set.

IIRC I had to fall down and to the right of the wall sucker (if you're facing it) to get it. I'll have to check but I think I still don't have what's underneath the slug thing. Yeah, it's weird actually.. they're horrible because of a bad moveset and even lacking a lot of moves.. like: you have no followups two-handed, there are no ripostes, backstabs or falling attacks. Sloppily made but I guess it's better than nothing :pCMoon wrote:Word is that neither of the whips are particularly good.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
After getting frustrated some more on NG+ Four Kings I decided to run down to the bottom of Tomb of the Giants to farm some humanity from the skellies. Spent an age getting past buckets of tough ass enemies only to find that the orange door doesn't just block Nito, it blocks the whole end area along with access to the damn creatures! Was very tempted to sack off the damn Darkwraith idea altogether but I have stuck to my guns and the lordvessel will remain in my pocket for a while longer.
Warped back out and decided to do a little grinding in Anor Londo and put on 20 levels or so. Ended up running silver knights from the second bonfire with my summon sign down for some possible S&O runs. Got summoned to a player who hadn't done any of the area at all so him, another phantom and I went trecking about killing enemies left and right. We got invaded three times on the way to the boss room but put them down with ease. You should have seen the hesitant stop as soon as they realised that there were three sl 100ish guys waiting for them! Proceeded to destroy the bosses without needing an estus between us.
I think that co-op is some of the best fun available in this game when it actually works.

Finally, got it.
Pretty easy up until I got to the graveyard. Got my first death thanks to that gigantic skeleton. Would have taken him out if I hadn't wasted most of my fireballs on the smaller skeletons. I could have easily made it back to the bonfire, but I chose to try and fight instead. How silly of me.
I like it so far, but I think I'll stop playing until the 1.04 patch is out for 360.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
Killed my first invader! Dumb SOB came at me 2-handing a meat cleaver. Paid for a couple level ups. Then did my summoning to help fight quelaag, but he was equally stupid and got us killed fighting rock trolls. Ah well. At least I'm out of blight town (or almost).
Don't bother with the graveyard just yet. I also thought it was the only way to go, but you want to head in the opposite direction up a hill and into Undead Burg. Low-level fighting against skellies who don't cough up souls only brings frustration.Cuilan wrote:Finally, got it.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
I need to figure out how to beat Four Kings... with my level 1 Pyromancer. Something tells me this won't be easy.
Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
OK, I'm sure I will be ridiculed for this, but I absolutely could not beat Gwyn (well, perhaps if I died 20 more times practicing that parry), so I summoned help to finally beat the game. Two helpers and Gwyn got 5 crystal ring shields to the back. Even the people helping me probably thought I was a cheap ass. This isn't exactly the way I wanted to win, but I wanted to run through the game once before the patch (and Skyrim) came out.
I have a feeling when I return to this game, I'm going to try being human a lot and enjoy more of the online aspects (maybe even join a covenant!) When I look at bosses like 4 kings, I don't even know if they were meant to be beaten in one player mode, and I'm sure that's why there are NPCs you can summon.
Anyway, absolutely loved the game, even if I'm a poor player. Look forward to my next character post 1.04.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
How do people maintain human form consistently enough to engage in regular online play? Is it just a matter of accumulating souls later in the game and buying tons of humanity?

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
Yeah four kings is totally possible at level 1. In fact, beating the game is. Just use pyromancy or lightning weapons. At level 1 I've already beaten Capra and Sif. It's also really easy providing you have Great Combustion, which only requires the unlocking of the mage (Depths) and the advanced mage (Pyromancy Hand +10, talking to mage) and she's in the swamps of Blighttown. You don't even need to go through Blighttown if you have the Master Key.
Usually people don't bother being in human form until right before they're ready to take on a boss, so they can see people's signs. Dark Souls still has a really mediocre co-op system, and apparently 1.04 breaks it even further, but they're a smart company, they'll figure it out.Moniker wrote:How do people maintain human form consistently enough to engage in regular online play? There's plenty of humanity in the game, and it's infinite too. I did a lot of summoning in Dark Souls, but none at all in Demon's Souls. Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
I got this game over the weekend and its been kicking my arse
, Im playing as a pyro and wanted to make a jack of all trades build. Would that fuck me up later into the game. STR and DEX seems pretty useless for boosting the DPS im guessing ild be better putting points it into something else
BTW can I recycle useless items or should I just throw them away?

BTW can I recycle useless items or should I just throw them away?
Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
I think general wisdom says that you should just pump your STR/DEX as far as it's required to wield the weapon you want. I got it high enough for my black knight sword in undead burg and haven't touched it since and haven't felt underpowered. Since then, I've been throwing every point into END and it's been paying off pretty well, although I think I'm setting myself up to be a warrior rather than a spellsword as I originally intended. Pyro damage isn't boosted by any stats so you're fine there (don't accidentally kill the pyro NPC in the Depths!), whereas sorcery is bumped by INT & miracles by FTH. I'm not all that far in the game yet, so someone else can speak up, but it would probably be a mistake to pump both INT and FTH.
You might as well keep useless equip (you'll eventually be able to get a bottomless box so it won't clutter your inventory). AFAIK there's no limit or penalty for doing so. After ringing the second bell you can sell stuff to an NPC in Firelink. Scroll to the bottom of this page to see his rates: http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com/Kingseeker+Frampt

Not with that weapon, you can't make it scale off anything else than STR/DEX.Moniker wrote:I think general wisdom says that you should just pump your STR/DEX as far as it's required to wield the weapon you want. And everyone raises END to 40 for maximum stamina, that's not really specific to anything.
Yeah, unless you want to use the greatsword of artorias (which is really powerful though)Moniker wrote:I'm not all that far in the game yet, so someone else can speak up, but it would probably be a mistake to pump both INT and FTH.

Re: Dark Souls- "Spiritual Successor to Demon's Souls"
Beat NG+ Four Kings last night! Solo'd them in the end too as noone was helping in my level range at all. Now I have my method down I plan on helping out there a fair amount over the next week or so, so if you are in range I am about 106 and will be happy to help lay the smack down.
My method was to continue using my Elite Knight+9 set with Black Leather Boots +9 but swithing out the helmet for a Mask of the Child for Stamina regen. I unequiped (and broke, although I have a spare) Lautrec's ring. I was initially scared by how much my stamina bar fell but using the Wolf Ring I boosted my poise significantly which ended up being the key. I Iron Flesh'd twice and two handed my Fury Sword while circling constantly and dive rolling like mad whenever one of the swines used that slow homing magic bolt. When I got down to the last one with multiple spawns I used a fire tempest spell to knock them about and then spammed Great Combustions for the win.
I used at least 10 estus flasks and so recommend killing Pinwheel first for the rite of kindling and getting the Firelight bonfire to +15.
Hope that's helpful.
