Re: Companies that are falling apart, or have fallen apart
God of War 3 has a wonky pace, mundane ideas and a story which never deviates from the expected, it makes the lead character Kratos cry like a baby... I thought the demo was great, but the rest of the game lacked any sort puzzle prowess (except the cube part). The only thing it did perfectly was the graphics.
It is a good example of a franchise going downhill though. I would hardly call Santa Monica in trouble though.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I only played the first God of War, but it was one of the worst games I've ever played. I shudder just thinking about it.

This sums up my opinion of God of War.
The point was that it's made of clearly visible individual pixels, not Photoshop/Flash gradients and brushes.Sumez wrote:I'm fairly sure the stuff Arc System is doing is hand drawn, not pixel art.
It's still great though.

Just looked at some BlazBlue sprites. They look like someone drew the animation frames with pencil and then someone else traced them in a very basic pixel art style.Estebang wrote:This sums up my opinion of God of War.The point was that it's made of clearly visible individual pixels, not Photoshop/Flash gradients and brushes.Sumez wrote:I'm fairly sure the stuff Arc System is doing is hand drawn, not pixel art.

Come, now. It's a perfectly fine dumb-down of DMC. Then again, its evil legacy of quicktime events is only now starting to fade.Drum wrote:I only played the first God of War, but it was one of the worst games I've ever played. I shudder just thinking about it.
PS. "Devil May Cry" is the most awesome piece of Engrish ever.

Fading? QTEs are more ubiquitous than ever! Arkham Asylum/City is basically a hyper-extended QTE! Not to mention Heavy Rain!
"Devil May Cry" isn't Engrish, it's a silly wordswap of "devil-may-care," which could be used to describe its protagonist.

Re: Companies that are falling apart, or have fallen apart
I have no real problem with the basic combat gameplay - in a lot of ways I think 'dumbing down' the DMC-style gameplay was an improvement (how technical do games about beating the shit out of monsters need to be really? I enjoy a bunch of acade beat em ups and they're generally less sophisticated than God of War). I just hated everything else. The main character, the story, how hard the devs were trying to make everything look like it had passed through Todd McFarlane's asshole and onto a Disturbed album cover. I mean, a lot of the gameplay was shit, don't get me wrong, but the parts it has in common with DMC were basically fine. Qtes are obviously shit (monsters from Greek mythology were practically made for creative and interesting boss battles ... God of War gives us Simon says), but there were so many other problems - invisible walls, silly lethality inconsistency (I can have my guts ripped out by a minotaur and I keep on trucking but I fall off a plank into the sea and I'm instantly dead), a crate-pushing escort mission, a 'rage meter'. The game is everything Old Man Murray taught me to hate and is just a wretched, stupid pile of crap expressly designed for people who enjoy Insane Clown Posse.Moniker wrote:Come, now. Re: Companies that are falling apart, or have fallen apart
I wonder if I played the same God of War as you. The GoW I played was a brilliant game, taking cues from well produced Japanese game series such as Devil May Cry and Zelda.
Especially comparing it to the beat'em ups of old (cause basically, GoW is a beat'em up), it comes out pretty well, IMO.

Re: Companies that are falling apart, or have fallen apart
i never did get on with dmc3. having said that though, i liked gow1. loved gow2. was jaded with gow3.
gow2 is one of the best games on ps2 in my humble opinion.
and there's nothing wrong with todd mcfarlane - i used to love spawn. or (early) disturbed - i bought their album full-price.

I used to love Spawn too - then I realised Todd McFarlane is the worst kind of hack and that Spawn is terrible. Then I read Flaming Carrot, Savage Sword of Conan and classic Dr Strange and became a man.replayme wrote:i never did get on with dmc3. having said that though, i liked gow1. loved gow2. was jaded with gow3.

Re: Companies that are falling apart, or have fallen apart
Ah, I figured that whatever person/body named the game simply got the idiom wrong. If it's intentional, "Devil May Care" would be a much better title, imo, though it would make much less sense to non-Anglophone audience.Estebang wrote:"Devil May Cry" isn't Engrish, it's a silly wordswap of "devil-may-care," which could be used to describe its protagonist.
Haven't played the Arkham games or Heavy Rain. I was planning on getting Arkham Asylum when the price hit bottom, but that's a pretty big turnoff. I think the most recent game I played with QTEs was Bayonetta, and the last non-slash-em-up was Gears of War 2 (can't remember for certain if it had them). Possibly I'm forgetting some.
