Re: Movies you've just watched
I'm in a mode to see movies I should have seen ages ago but haven't. Watched Serpico last month, and just did One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest last night.

xbl0x180 wrote:Men Behind The Sun wasn't that great. The director handled things well with his budget and resources, but the movie itself just kinda meandered and was a bit boring. I think it's one of those trappings that exploitative films fall into - the premise sounds cool and the really gory stuff stands out to shock the hell outta people; however, there's this other 90 minutes of badly-written dialogue and amateur acting to get to the highlight. And it's not that the director wasn't old hat at filming and editing because even maestros have made these kinds of exploitative duds. Check out Tinto Brass's Salon Kitty (I still ended up getting the 2-disc Special Edition)![]()

Michael Moriarty played "Harry Potter" in the first Troll movie. Dude's like the John muthaf****n' Saxon of 80s Video Schlock. But he has the acting chops. He's very good in the early Law And Order seasons (the only ones worth watching) and I think he was in Bang The Drum Slowly, which is bona fide classic.

Dogs of War starring Christopher Walken & Blue Collar with Richard Pryor. Both excellent films in their own way. I've been going back and watching alot of stuff from the 70's & 80's lately. Smaller films you might've missed & whatnot.
And a few months ago I caught The Legend of Hell House. The camera work was just fantastic for it's time.

I just watched Ghost In The Shell - I did enjoy it but I found it a bit hard to understand and I'm pretty sure I didn't FULLY understand the ending...
Re: Movies you've just watched
The sequel to "Ghost In The Shell" is even more warped

Man, people keep discovering it and finding it being quite good over ten years down the line in this quickly floating world of pop entertainment, just like Twin Peaks or Diablo... If this doesn't make for a classic, I don't know what does.Raytrace wrote:and I know I'm really late to the party here (and it's seems to divide a lot of people's opinions) but I'm at Episode 8 of Neon Genesis Evangelion and I love it...

Re: Movies you've just watched
I remember watching through all of the stuff in the series a year ago, somehow without knowing anything before hand apart from it being popular. Liked it a lot as well. Be sure to watch End of Evangelion afterwards. I need to watch through it all again sometime.Raytrace wrote:and I know I'm really late to the party here (and it's seems to divide a lot of people's opinions) but I'm at Episode 8 of Neon Genesis Evangelion and I love it...
The Rebuild OVAs are a weird diversion but have really good production values.

yeah I dont know what makes me enjoy it so much, maybe it's all the pausing/frozen shots and nice layout of the art, I don't know, but it is just great for some reason I think. It's hilarious the way it actually says 'oh and we'll give you some fan service next episode' at the end sometimes too hahahaObiwanshinobi wrote:Man, people keep discovering it and finding it being quite good over ten years down the line in this quickly floating world of pop entertainment, just like Twin Peaks or Diablo... Cheers, I'm rewatching em all too. It's pretty good.Raytrace wrote:I'm gonna watch em all don't worry - I think it's turning into my 'new BSG' at this rate
I think what would be really interesting is if someone did an edit and removed the crappy bits from it. There's such a range of content in the series, sometimes even within one episode, I think it actually harms rather than helps. But maybe not, maybe it's the more "mainstream" mundane bits that make the OMFG parts stand out more? Hard to say ...
For example, since I just watched it yesterday, most of the scenes in episode 2 when Shinji moves in with Misato ... Pen-Pen? Misato's binge drinking and Daisy Duke cutoffs? LAAAAAAAAMMMMMMEEEEEEEE.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Towards the end, it pulls another one of those weird set of sequences just like the denouement of the first movie. The gist of it is the emergence of A.I.'s "consciousness," so it's somewhat like Blade Runner in that sense. It's an Oshii Mamoru film, so I pretty much will like it even if it was a messRaytrace wrote:it's about cyber sex dolls murder robots or something isn't it?xbl0x180 wrote:The sequel to "Ghost In The Shell" is even more warped

Re: Movies you've just watched
I watched Bedevilled (a Korean thriller/horror film) last night. Decent movie, but I thought most of the characters felt a little over-exaggerated and one-dimensional. Still enjoyed it for the most part though.

yeh it does seem a bit weird though - for a start how could she be an alcy in such an important position? and who always seems to be fully alert?
having said that - I forgive all once that beautiful intro music comes on :p
Re: Movies you've just watched
yeah there were loads of scenes in Ghost In The Shell that just seemed to 'happen' without an explanation of what was going on, I mean it kept the kinda dark mood going, but for thickos like me I was just lookin at the screen like this:xbl0x180 wrote:Towards the end, it pulls another one of those weird set of sequences just like the denouement of the first movie. GiTS is one of my all-time favorite anime. I missed out on the limited screening when it was being shown at the local art movie house & had to be content when it was finally released on VHS format back in the mid-1990s. Eventually, I made the upgraded jump to DVD format with GiTS and then, Blu-Ray formats when they became available. The GiTS 2.0 re-release on BR format is an interesting remake with CG in place of traditional cels (in some certain scenes) yet retains the tight pacing/flow of the original theaterical version.
Once you're finished with watching the Evangelion series, try watching both Evangelion films (there are two of them including "End of Evangelion") -- I won't spoil it for you.
If you haven't watched the Blu-Ray versions of Evangelion 1.11: You are (not) Alone & Evangelion 2.22: You can (not) Advance remakes, you're in for a cool visual/audio treat. It's an interesting side diversion into the Evangelion universe/mythos. There is a third Evangelion remake film currently in production & has yet to be released theatrically in Japan (then the subsquent release on Blu-Ray & DVD formats will follow a tad bit later). Originally, there was slated to be four Evangelion film remakes but it was ultimately decided that it be cut down to just three film releases instead (to cut down on production time between each release).

cool yeah I've had pretty limited Anime viewing in my life - when Akira was being talked about loads in early 90s I saw it, also Wicked City and some Devilmans, but that's it really - I gotta lot of catching up to do :pPC Engine Fan X! wrote:For Raytrace,Raytrace wrote:yeah there were loads of scenes in Ghost In The Shell that just seemed to 'happen' without an explanation of what was going on, I mean it kept the kinda dark mood going, but for thickos like me I was just lookin at the screen like this:

I think I'll go into Tower Records soon and buy a load of Anime blu-rays if they have them

ok so I'm getting confused with the sequence to watch Eva stuff - for the moment it's ok to finish off the original 26 episodes is it? or is there anything in the middle of them?
thanks

Re: Movies you've just watched
Oh, it's recommended to watch the entire Evangelion TV series first, then watch both Evangelion films second. Thirdly, then watch both Evangelion remake films to see how they differ compared to the original TV anime series & two film releases.
Back in the Spring of 1995, my local hobby shop had gotten in the latest Evangelion model kits of the Evas mecha (but the TV series hadn't been picked up for distribution in the USA yet). I could only wonder what this Evangelion series was about until much later...it certainly did pique my interest in it. By looking at all the various Eva model kits available for purchase, I could tell that it wasn't your average SF anime mecha suit series indeed. Quite odd but true.

cool I shall follow that order
yeah I have to be honest - I have seen so much Evangelion imagery over the years and I actually thought they looked a bit plasticy or something (I would usually see images of the figures) now having seen them in action, I bloody love them! :p - my favourite bit of them so far was Unit 2 balancing atop the aircraft carrier with pseudo Su-27s sliding all over the place
