After comparing it to youtube vids, it seems to me that the speed is pretty near 100% accurate. Is it perfect? No, of course not, but it's good enough for anyone who doesn't know or who isn't particularly looking for it, and that's pretty much all that can be expected, especially at this point.

Thiers no hardware slowdown emulated so how is this near 100%?

I didn't word that accurately. I was talking mainly about speed. There are still graphical glitches(the jellyfish things in level two, for example), and it's not just with Futari, either. It can't be 100% accurate anyway because, well, there's no sound.

I'll edit my post to reflect what I meant so that people don't think I'm a senile old man.

I don't think anybody was really making a big deal about the missing slowdown but it'd still be nice to have it especially for the sake of comparing scores.

By the way, speaking of Mame and stuff, what the hell did they do to/touch on RayForce/Gunlock/Layer Section? The sound and framerate is all crappy and choppy and it's been like that since last year. Perhaps there is something I'm missing, especially with people going gaga with Cave stuff and forgetting all the other shooters :P

edit: Also, all the technical info on how the PCBs output music and such sounds interesting. How old is this hardware in terms of overall technology and capacity?

That's correct in principle, but things like cache hit rate, variable memory and I/O wait states, and bus arbitration can make it very tricky to get it right, and most emulators only try to approximate these effects. They can depend on complex timing interactions that are very time-consuming (both in developer man-hours and in CPU cycles) to emulate.

Huh. I got MMS's latest build to work and Futari won't run at over 40% speed. Is it a hardware problem on my end, or can I overclock it to run faster?

In the original Mushi Futaris (not Black Label), there seemed to be some colored blocks "ghosting", if you will, behind some of the jellyfish. There was also a line in the left center of the screen right after the first level boss bursts through the "forest" and begins his first attack. It goes away shortly thereafter. But then again, I was using the 32-bit version at the time, so that could be it.

if someone wants better speed - check this build (64bit).
http://www.sendspace.com/file/flqwws
it uses multithreading for blitting, and works much faster on scenes with a lot of blending, on multi-core CPUs of course.
