Advice on shmups

Post by idchappy »

Howdy peeps, not really played alot of them to be honest but whilst tinkering about with the really early one's (space invaders and stuff) i quite enjoyed it :) .
So has anyone got some recommendations of good shooters to get? is it best to start my journey at some of the earlier ones then work my way through the years and games?
Ta for any helps :mrgreen:

I should be posting this in the "I'm drunk" thread, but there's already quite a few "I want recommendations" threads. Every forum about something seems to have many threads like it.
But hey:
Sonic Wings Special (avoid the PAL edition)
Zanac Special Version
Eliminate Down
R-Type
Hyper Duel
...
There you go.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Which consoles do you own? Usually I recommend games based on what consoles are readily available.

if you want chronological this is a good start;

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28454

you can pick up flying shark/sky shark fairly cheap, plus raiden 2, 1943, raiden fighters 1 - all quality shooters.

or you can get one of viletims console>jamma adaptors and play some arcade perfect conversions like the toaplan shooting battle, raiden project and raiden DX. much cheaper than buying the boards - hook a ps2 up and you can get psyvariar XII stag and strikers 1945 dirt cheap off amazon.

racketboys shmup guides are a good idea, they cover different systems;

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa ... ps&spell=1

and ofc the shmups.com xenocide files offer a lot of reviews;

http://www.shmups.com/xenocidefiles.html

and mike bevans destroy all monsters site is worth a look;

Dodonpachi is a good starter shmup, as long as you don't get intimidated by the number of bullets. Just keep in mind the size of your hitbox and you'll be fine.

No. I actually find them much easier and enjoyable than most old school games that get thrown around as being "beginner-friendly".

You could try out the classic 1986 Capcom's HyperDyne Sidearms PCB...came out in two different flavors, Japan region & USA region (that was distributed stateside by Romstar themselves). Both PCB versions have some minor/subtle differences (like the main opening title intro) but in terms of gameplay and game mechanics, they're both the same classic game at heart. Hint: Full auto-fire is your best bet to 1CC (or 2CC) it. Just be sure to have access to three buttons per player & you're good to go. It's common to see scores of 1,500,000+ & up on a single SA session indeed. With it's arcade-spec framerate (running at a sliky smooth 60 frames-per-second framerate), it's a solid yoko based shmup worthy of your private arcade shmup PCB collection. Even Cave pays tribute with SA's game mechanics for their Deathsmiles PCB release.

There's always Konami's Time Pilot '84 PCB conversion kits to give a spin (that was released in American arcades back in 1984-1985).

Anything with "Raiden" in it that's not Metal Gear Solid.

It's the man's way to play, and as I understand it they go for something cheap compared to Cave PCBs, especially their newer ones ($2000 for a rehash of Mushihimesama? The Raiden II "New" edition rehash didn't cost that much on release surely).

Not sure I'd pay anything north of $60 that makes me want to bite through my tongue to end it all (albeit in a good way) every time I play. Anything with "raiden" and "fighters" should be fine.

:lol: Yeah, that sounds similar to me, games to avoid sticking hammers through the cab in frustration would be nice :mrgreen:

good starter 80s/90s shoot em ups pcbs that aren't too expensive.

twin cobra
flying shark
air busters/aero blasters

once you get a bit more into the genre i recommend
batsugun
armed police batrider
dodonpachi/esperade
raiden fighters 1 or 2(jet is coolest but also the hardest)

Charlie is right , Ibara will rape you hard !

Try some in Mame before you shell out like Raiden Fighters series , Viper Phase 1 , Dogyuun , Truxton 1 & 2 , early and cheaper Cave ones like Donpachi or Esp.Ra.De .

And enjoy your new Cabs Mate :mrgreen:

I've seen a barebones Seibu Kaihatsu produced SP1 Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. cart sold here on the Shmups Trading section sell for a mere $50.00 USD some time back (so if you want to play some budget SP1 games, that's a fairly reasonable price to pick one up). Not a bad price for a cool tate arcade shmup title. Plus, it's the same version (in terms of gameplay & game mechanics) as the Japanese region SP1 cartridge of Viper Phase 1 New Version.

Well by that logic I suck at Cave shmups outright yet nearly beat the true final stage of Raiden Fighters JET within a week, so surely it must be less frustrating then Ibara/anything by Yagawa. :P
