3 lives, Medium difficulty (arcade), extends at 200K and every 500K (arcade). If you can, set the region to Japan if it isn't already (arcade), and do not use the Europe cart (MD) unless you really want a board for it. The 1P and 2P arcade versions are different.

Don't use the stage 8 warp in the 1P version, please.

tks luy, but it's really not that nice
the MD version is broken, you can counterstop by milking the last checkpoint/boss (2 lives gained + 1 life lost)

Well, that was unexpected! Played this again over the course of the last few days and tried to get farther into the second loop. Ironically, I almost gave up on the bosses in 2-2 again but finally figured out a way to beat them with just the vulcan and no speed ups. Lots of nasty changes from the second loop onwards, I died quite a bit yet managed to pull off some miraculous recoveries. I do call avariciousness for repeating the same ending on loop 2 and 3, however! Got inattentive on loop 4 and had no chance to get back on my feet, the bullet count and speed gets rather high.

I did play the PCE version on the default settings, there is no way to even change the difficulty as far as I know.

Arcade, 1P version

Perikles - 4,973,150 - 2-8 - Yes - ShmupMAME v4.2 (Japan)

Despatche wrote:I don't know of any regional differences like with Tatsujin and such, but there probably are some in both arcade and MD.
Arcade Zero Wing works like arcade Hellfire in that it has a 1P version with checkpoints and a 2P version without them. It also seems like you start with the red shot in the 2P version and gain the green laser after a death which makes it tremendously easier for survival, although you can't boost your score by checkpoint-milking the final stage, obviously. I don't think region matters, I accidentally played the European version before switching to Japan, didn't notice any differences whatsoever.

Anyway, this was a weird run. Had a credit before that where I died on the final stage, got to the final boss but couldn't quite figure out a reliable recovery pattern. So I practiced it and started anew. I stumbled upon the 10-up and did the only sensible thing: I milked the hell out of that checkpoint. Was almost sure to not get very far in the second loop (especially after an ignominious death on the first boss), but well, I somehow got all the way to the final boss, almost made it, too! Will have to think about uploading the video or not, it's almost two hours long, a good part of it is the relentless leeching process...

Well, I uploaded the run. The milking is not optimal by any means, lost two lives prior, one while milking but before reaching the final boss, some too early during the process, didn't wait for the last life etc., but you get the idea. I put time codes in the video description for those who'd rather not sit through half an hour's worth of milking.

This should be an almost optimal score, I played with maximum speed for additional points and sacrificed almost all of my lives at the most lucrative checkpoint. Was more enjoyable than I thought beforehand.

I figured I might as well submit the 1-ALL I did a few months back. MAME cheats were used for autofire and for disabling the screen flashing whenever enemies are destroyed. I also got the 10UP on stage 2.

Only got the 1up and no 10up but it would have made no difference, one single checkpoint just killed every life I had.

I am continuing my quest to play every game Toaplan ever made, and here is Zero Wing. Not sure how I feel about the arcade version, but after playing the MD version with its incredible music, this version feels like a massive downgrade.

I do also have the Retro-Bit cart and I've cleared that I think twice, but it looks like we're not using that version and I didn't record my score anyway, so I'll eventually get around to playing the Japanese MD version through various means. I do have a Japanese copy coming in the mail eventually thanks to the Kickstarter, but it might take like a year or so for it to arrive.

I take it warp to stage 8 is not allowed, right? I definitely used the warp to go to stage 8 and somehow died at the very first checkpoint. I don't know if it's actually possible to recover at that checkpoint; even though I picked up a 10UP, I wasted all of those extends right there at the start of the stage. I am starting to think that checkpoint recovery on this game in general is super awful.

Yeah, the red flashing isn't actually that annoying to me. I have the PCB now and on the CRT monitor I don't think it's really that bad at all; one of my friends came over and I showed it to him and he didn't notice the red flash at all until I pointed it out. M2 and Bitwave both got rid of it, though.

As for the warp, it only exists in the 1P arcade version. No other versions of the game have it. If you're playing for score you won't want to use it anyway because you end up missing 2.5 stages worth of points if you do.
