I'm pretty sure wobble mode was the only yoko mode in Saturn Gunbird. Made the game literally unplayble without tate. The way wobble makes bullets appear to slow down/speed up when you're weaving in and out of patterns is terrible.

So I guess the problem really is particular to Image Fight after all.
I'm pretty certain it is - I don't think the console is actually transmitting the entire playfield, meaning even the most appropriate display will simply give the cropped image. Again, I'd love to be wrong on this.
Makes me wonder if this issue pertains to the USA region version of PSX Raiden Project as well. There's the cool Gameshark code that fixes the PSX controller to tate properly when playing in tate mode when playing the USA ver. of RP. The dreaded non-tate controller issue still exists in the USA version of Raiden II from Interplay for Win95 though (if played in tate).

Raiden DX on the PSX seems to have the cropping issue as well (if used on an old-school 4:3 CRT-based TV monitor). Will have to fire it up on an true low-res 15kHz arcade monitor and see if the PSX Raiden DX cropping issue comes up again. I'm sure it'll be full screen and resized with the arcade monitor's pot trims to be at it's best (considering it's running at 320 x 240 indeed).

I thought Tate mode was removed altogether in the US version? That's why I bought the Japanese release...

Tate is still included in the USA version of Raiden Project...it's that SCEA forgot to include a user selectable setting to rotate the controls if played in tate (the tate controller code is still present on the USA ver. RP disc itself but is NOT user selectable in-game). With a handy PSX Gameshark cheat device and the proper GS code, it's possible to play with the proper tate'd controls with the USA ver. of RP indeed. Works like a charm.

Gameshark code: 80050BAC 0003

There're still folks demanding a Gameshark code to see if such a (hidden) tate screen mode is possible for the Agetech version of Strikers 1945 (aka Strikers 1945 II). On the original Japanese PSX version of Strikers 1945 II, tate is selectable (i.e. -- the original Psikyo release & the later re-released Superlite 1500 version of S-1945 II from Success).

What would you guys recommened the size the of the TV to be? I'm thinking about buying a Trinitron between 27" and 35" (if they exist).

I guess it depends how close you're sitting to the TV. If you're pressed up against the glass like it was an arcade cab, 35 is probably too big.

Honestly, I think something like 21-23 inches is perfect for tate, especially if you see yourself flipping it back and forth. CRTs are heavy.
