I found scoring much easier (and more enjoyable) with sound effects turned down. All the lock on and shot sounds cover the beat too much if they're left on their default levels.

I finally got a nice widescreen HDTV not so long ago so I can properly enjoy this again. I had 48/50 achievements, only needing a few gold stars on Hard to get everything, so I purposefully stopped playing so I could eventually return to it with a clear goal in mind.

Too bad is sold like crap, but that's what I expected. I don't know anyone IRL who bought it, gamers I know moslty just play western RPGs and FPS, the blockbuster stuff.

I'm glad that a few of you have enjoyed it, it surpassed my expectations in a big way. At the end of the day I feel it is equal to Rez, which basically translates to Best (non-shmup) game of all time.

I've really been wanting to pick this up, just haven't really had the extra chash and?or waiting for a price drop. So it's not like everyone isn't interested. But, it's too bad that I can't really show the support I would of liked to this time around and got it new on release.

I love stage 4 with it's "journey through earth's technology-theme". It's my favourite stage from both COE and Rez. I made it to second place on the hard leaderboard, which is my best effort in any stage so far :)

I got my last few achievements a few days ago, now I'll try to up my score in stage 5 on normal and hard and then I'll move on to the Hope archive, which I've played mostly for survival until now.
Other than that I'm happy with all the scores I've achieved and won't try to better them for now unless someone from my friends list can overtake me on one of the leaderboards of course.

If someone is playing for score feel free to add me for some competition, my gt is RenderingRanger.

to my shame i have still yet to play this beyond level 2 - given i was hyped as hell for it, i really should find the time.

That said - PS3 version with 3D support.... hmmm.... and a strong itch to pich up either the HMD or a big fat 3d projector. As i say, Rez on a projector was insane, COE on a projector and in 3d? I might have to put down some plastic floor sheeting.

Damn. This was on my list to get upon release, but after the disappointment of Catherine and Otomedius Gorgeous, I gave up on American releases for this year and dumped hundreds of dollars on imports.

I only just recently got this.
I don't know why I waited so long because it is MUCH better than Rez to me. CoE is more fun to replay because I like the scoring system a lot more.

Having a lot of trouble getting gold stars though... I only have 1

Can someone answer two questions for me about this game?

1. Does it support 4:3 display mode? or will it be letter boxed in 4:3 mode?
2. I've herd it can play fine with a joystick, but does it support movement via the d-pad or only the analog stick?

I would also like to know if Rez HD supports 4:3 and d-pad, although I guess I should be able to download a free demo right?

I haven't tried Child of Eden on a 4:3 set yet, but seeing as the game was designed with widescreen in mind I would think it would letterbox.

Rez HD does not have 4:3 support - the HD mode is widescreen and the classic mode will double-letterbox on a widescreen display.

Rez HD supports Sticks / D-Pad. COE is analog only but works really well with it.

I love the 360 version, but I'm buying the PS3 version as well. I really regret not getting a 3D TV right now. This game alone makes me think about getting one.

Does anyone have any idea what the PS3 Move control scheme will be like? That is what I am most interested in. I love playing with the Kinect, but it is far from perfect. Playing with the Move SHOULD provide better accuracy and less latency.

Outing myself as a nerd now, as I have arranged overall Top 20 leaderboards for Child Of Eden.
They combine the scores of stages 1-5 for the Top 20 players in the world for normal and hard difficulties.

I've posted them on the Ubisoft forums:

That's pretty cool, I appreciate the effort. I'm glad I cracked the top 20 on Normal at least. (out of the 50 people who tried playing for score)

Speaking of, Play-Asia has Child of Eden for $18.90. If you want to give me money, use this link.

I'm actually shocked at how cheap this is, considering it's the sequel to Rez. I guess it's because it's a Kinect game, and holds no real bearing towards the quality of the actual game.

Now move up on the hard leaderboard :D

I think I accidently sent some pm's over XBox live to you as I sent the link to all the gamertags in the list but xbox.com was giving me error messages all over the place.

PS3 version is out. Move controller is much more accurate than the Kinect. Responds more quickly as well. But even though I'm playing better I'm getting less stars. Weird. There are definitely some changes in place. First boss shoots out way more bullets than before. Still easy, of course.

I'd say the Kinect brings me into the game more but I can do more of what I actually intend to do with the Move.

Wait... can you use the regular 360 controller to play this game or do you need Kinect?

Regular controller works. I personally feel this game works best with motion controls, but a lot of people also disagree.

If you want to play for score the only way to go is playing with a controller.
This also reflects in the leaderboards, controller scores are way ahead of Kinect scores.

I have a feeling the scores on the PS3 will end up closer if people use the 2nd control scheme. All the firing is mapped to the controller. Move is just for aiming.

And does Child of Eden on the PS3 support 3D mode as well? Interesting to hear that aiming is more precise with the PS3 Move setup compared to uisng Kinect + 360 console setup with CoE.

CoE is 3D compatible. unfortunately, I do not have a 3D television. This is one game I really would like to experience in 3D.

yea, the Move controller is far more precise than the Kinect. No accidentally triggering the octolock. Much much less lag. One minor gripe is the way it calibrates. You calibrate it as if you are only sitting or standing in one spot the whole time. That's the one problem I have. In games like DeadSpace Extraction the Move works fine without that odd calibration... So I'm not sure why they did it that way.

Anyone else playing this with the Move? I'd like to see who can get the highest scores. #1 on the leader board for level 1,2,3 on normal so far. Haven't tried the rest seriously yet.

It's a relief to know this works with a real controller. I hate anything requiring physical activity 8)

At least you don't have to stand with the Move. I've probably only played the game on the Kinect for 90 minutes in a sitting at most. I've logged 4 hours a day the past 2 days with the Move. That said, it's time for a break for a few days. Coming home from work, eating dinner, and then playing CoE late so I'm dozing off at my job the next day isn't the greatest idea. :D

Wow. I have to start thinking of getting a 3D projector for this, just.. wow.

Too bad the Move version was done by some sloppy-ass idiots: Instead of the fast and intuitive point-and-click, all the menus still follow the Kinect scheme where you need to point and wait for seconds for the button to activate - braindead. Fucking braindead, and INFURIATING.

How to score? I need help. I'm super busy, could you guys give me the basics, or rather correct if I've misunderstood something? Thanks.

-So I try to always lock 8 objects, then release the Lock-on laser?
-I have to release the lock in sync with the music beats? How do I know if it worked? Is this even possible when there's a lot happening?
-I'll shoot down all purple things with Tracer? Do I need to do this to the beat also, or just as fast as I can?
-How do I beat bosses, quick or careful? Is there a time bonus? For now, I'm just mashing Lock-on and Tracer simultaneously when a core is exposed.
-Do I get score from shooting things like the big swarms of "particles" in the sky (I think it was in 'Beauty' stage..)? They react to the Tracer.
-Anything else I should know?
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

You're on the right track. A lot of info was probably covered in this thread already, but just to reiterate:
  • The key to scoring is chaining perfect octo-locks - you'll see a "Perfect" indicator if you released an octo-lock on beat and a combo bonus will be incremented, up to x8. A "great" octo-lock doesn't break your combo but won't add to your bonus. Releasing an octo-lock completely off beat will break your combo. Releasing less than 8 locks neither helps nor hurts your combo.
  • The tracer should only be used on projectiles or purple enemies - on projectiles, this is purely a defensive mechanism as they aren't worth any score. If you can use the lock on it, you're better off sticking with the lock alone.
  • If you're after completion you should try to kill everything that moves - you can turn on score indicators in the options if you want to know exactly how well you're doing. Again, if you can kill things with locks, you should do so, especially if it means making your octo-lock chain longer.
