Elixir, you take cracked.com a little too seriously.
Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Fuck, not again. I thought the article was for real.
Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
The article doesn't even mention the fact that if you're a US resident living abroad you're only exempt from double taxation below an income of $91,400.
Contrast this with virtually all other countries in the world, where double taxation is unconstitutional.

That's the flat income number... it is actually far above this. Foreign earned housing is a very nice write off that can take you up to another $75k if you actually spend that on rent. All of your foreign paid taxes are also 100% written off. The actually bracket where you pay anything is north of $150k a year (and is closer to $200k really). Sucks that we have to file every year in the first place, but, that's the price you have to pay when you're better than every other country.CIT wrote:The article doesn't even mention the fact that if you're a US resident living abroad you're only exempt from double taxation below an income of $91,400.
I believe the Philipines has something similar, but that's just something I heard.Contrast this with virtually all other countries in the world, where double taxation is unconstitutional.
The true fist fuck if you're American living abroad long term, is that if you contract a chronic illness abroad, you will either retire in a country w/ social medicine, or die broke... or pay for American insurance when you don't live there. Pretty sure you're going to get dropped the moment they get a whiff of your illness though, if you're on an individual plan.

Good to know that I'm equally screwed no matter where I go. Yay =P.
Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
I don't care about this list - if we elect a Republican as president in 2012, I AM going to move to Sweden.
Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Screw the money and the U.S. elections, I am moving to Sweden just for the girls

bahaha. this was an awesome read regardless of the source. I've wanted to live/work abroad for ages and an opportunity
at current employer is looking good (had 3rd interview last Thursday). 1 year contract in Stockholm.
If this doesn't work out, I'll just fuck off back to Austin.

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Well, if you're REALLY into living abroad and trying new things, it's not such a turn off. I imagine Stockholm would be a blast, and let's face it, Swedes speak good English. While there's probably culture shock on the business side of things from anywhere to anywhere, culture shock out of the workplace within western countries can't be that big of a deal. Into Asia? Forget it... if you're not open minded to all sorts of wacky shit, you'll just punch the balls off yourself.
Tell people you're from Austin, btw... not Dallas. Texans don't have the greatest international reputation. Trust me -- I'm in the 10 year club now, and I always have to explain.

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Whoa guys, let me break you some news about Sweden before you decide to move there!
You can ONLY by alcohol in certain government controlled stores dedicated to the purpose, and these are only open till 6 on weekdays, and 1 on saturdays - and this isn't even for hard liquor alone, it goes for anything (including beer) above 3.5%! (as if you'd consider anything below 4% "beer")
Even the cheapest bottle of utter crap booze there will run you at least $20, too.
Also nearly every night club closes at 2am meaning all the night life in Sweden dies out by then.
I live right next to the bridge to Sweden meaning every weekend we have to deal with stupid drunk Swedish people coming over every weekend to leech on our "cheap" alcohol and "strong" beer.
It's ok though, I like the Swedish.

Its not that hard to succeed to get into the UK. Just make sure your from a bombed country, have 12 kids and we will put you up in a £1.5million home free of charge.

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Well, to be fair, and to add counterweight to my previous post, Swedish girls do put out a lot, so that's not a problem if you're into that stuff.

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
yeah scandinavian countries have CRAZY ... and i MEAN CRAZY so called luxury-taxes on stuff they consider luxury... alcohol, cigarettes, coca-cola
that's why they always get drunk in other countries...because in their own it's totally not affordable... they even go on shopping tours to denmark and such to buy VANS FULL of alcohol and beer which they consume over the year...many people there tend to distille their own alcohol too...

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Funnily, i'm such an ugly specimin i rarely get hit on out here in Japan (unlike all the rugged he-men who come over and have to fight off the ladies with a shitty stick) , but the last girl who did show any interest was Swedish.yeah because these girls wait their whole life for stupid fat americans to come over and fuck them... really ...
I assumed it was some elabourate joke as she was clearly way out of my looks league and significantly younger, but i guess funny things can happen to ladies at a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club gig.
I'm not american though - and i guess technically i'm no longer fat
Hmmm - actually, now i think about it - the last several people who've hit on me here have all been non-asians. I'm clearly not living the foreigner in Japan dream... even the wife is half portuguese and is (at least mentally) not Japanese - which is a good thing. Except when shes pissed off.
"I've asked 2 experts on taking RGB screenshots...."
Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Japan is my #1 choice (if I had a choice...). I imagine it's tough to get over there without starting off as an ESL teacher (we talked a bit about this)GaijinPunch wrote:Well, if you're REALLY into living abroad and trying new things, it's not such a turn off. I work at a Swedish company and the #1 thing the Swedes I work w/ (doing 1/yr contracts here) keep telling me to prepare for is the radical change in weather.
I'll say this much dude, the age old mantra "it's all about who you know" worked for me. I would have never known about this position had I not helped and
developed a friendship with a VP. Making the transition from Finance to IT was an eyeopener. Amazed me how curt and condescending a lot of my team members
were/are towards ppl they didn't even know. A little professionalism and humor goes a long ways. I'm rambling. I hope everything pans out, but it looks like I won't
know the final decision until another month or so now...

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
I live in Seattle, so I think I could get used to the climate over in Sweden. The blondes... may be harder to get used to.
Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
Where in Seattle are you?
Going back there next week actually. Cant wait to enjoy the dampy mossy cloudy city I once called home.

Re: Six Reasons Your Plans to Move Abroad Might Not Work Out
The climate in Sweden isn't bad unless you live like way into the country in the middle of nothing.
