TV Help: Overscan, Secret Service Menus, Etc
I just got a minty 27" Trinitron Flatscreen CRT (KV-27FV310) to use with my consoles - in Tate naturally. Problem is the overscan (too big) and that I've never done any service menu tinkering in my life.
Anyone have some pointers, I'd be so happy to get the picture to fit properly on this screen, thanks!

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
Probably the standard Sony code to enter the service menu: put TV into standby -> info/display, 5, vol+, power on. Then you toggle the menu until you come to the geometry menu where you can set width, height and everything else.
Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
just be aware that unplugging the set could (will) erase your custom settings.
Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
First off, thanks so much for the info! I went to a TV repair shop thinking that I might as well have a professional take care of my display problems... That didn't quite go as planned, guy there wasn't straight up and when I got back I saw your guys' replies and figured I might as well see what I could do.
So I just finished tinkering around a whole bunch on a different (but very similar) TV which had numerous issues - vert and hori size and position and serious bowing. I was able to mostly fix those issues, but two remain - red bleeding, a flashing white bar on top of the screen... Any ideas if those can be fixed from the service menu? Regardless, the TV is so much better now and I know why to do to get a perfect full screen view on my other set.
Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
See if one of these settings fixes it? Most NTSC televisions have a bias towards boosting red. Allegedly to improve the tint of skintones on broadcast signals, but...chempop wrote:red bleeding

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
just red bleed? .... or general convergence? If just red perhaps balancing the color levels and color drive options differently...? Otherwise your probably tinkering internally...
No idea about that white bar - happens on more than one device/inputs?

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
What's the source video you're using? It's relatively common for older broadcasts meant for analog to have header junk in the overscan area.chempop wrote:red bleeding, a flashing white bar on top of the screen...
Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
I've now successfully adjusted my new 27" yipee! It's pretty damn close to perfect although there is a slight colored shadow/bleed, but it's mainly just noticeable at developer logo intro screens. I went through nearly all the settings to see what they did and fiddled with just about everything related to geometry, colors, and resolution. A small pisser is that even though the Saturn is near-perfect fullscreen now, my PS1 has 3 small borders with Cave's Tatehose modes. Not a biggie at all and I can always adjust that if I need to.
So about the other screen with the white bar, again I'm just using s-video, but it's there even on a blank vid screen once turned on. It honestly seems like some kind of damage caused it. There is also an strange unalignement In the middle of the screen, but it only effects the top and bottom borders. If I can't fix it I'm just going to expand the H/VSIZ so it's off the screen.
I haven't messed around yet to fix the red bleed, it's kinda funny actually - the bomb fragments in Garegga look like they have blood dripping down them

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
I have a Sony KV-X29620 that I also needs overscan correction. I'm able to get into the service menu but there is no onscreen display. I've managed to figure out that numbers 1-50 all do "something" and I'm able to colour balance, get rid of red bleed etc. but not adjust the picture position or overscan.
It's an older model and maybe that option doesn't exist - any info would be appreciated.

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
Dan, you might be able to find the service menu manual here.
Thanks MKL for linking me to that site, was a huge help.
If you can't find your exact model number just see if one that is similar will work, I think I saw a manual for KV-X2970 series...

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
Cheers chempop (and MKL)- I had a look but the model isn't listed, I'll try something similar. I've got the manual but it doesn't say anything about the service menu. I should really just buy an new crt, this one cost £20 off gumtree...
I took the back off the tv last year and tried fiddling with a couple of pots (?) which adjusted focus and that weird thing that make diagonal lines appear across the screen. I don't want to do that again, IT'S TOO RISKY. Don't try it.

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
Chassis model is what counts, not TV model. Chempop has a KV-27FV310 and my link is for KV-27FV300 but it doesn't matter because both are based on the BA5D chassis.
@Dan76: KV-X29620 doesn't seem to be a valid model. If it's a KV-X2962 then it has an AE2 chassis so you need to look for a service manual of any TV based on that chassis.

Re: Help me: Overscan correction on Sony CRT
Big thanks MKL, it was a model KV-X2962U, not KV-X29620 - a piece of tape was covering the top of the model number, duh.
Anyhow, downloaded the AE-2(F) chassis pdf and worked a treat. Now at last I can play Akai Katana full screen in 4:3.

Great to hear you that figured it out! I had totally fogotten about how pissed I was with the overscan on Akai Katana Arcade mode. Since then I've actually aquired a 30" widescreen Wega HD for all my hori's so it became a non-issue.
I should probably rename this thread and provide links and info for any overscan trouble-shooting, secret service menus, etc.

Re: TV Help: Overscan, Secret Service Menus, Etc
[EDIT again] well I'm continually kicking myself over this project to get a decent picture setup lol. So there definitely was a setting a changed that makes the service menu disappear and the power buttons stop function. I wanted to see if I could make it happen again and it did, but this time I got back into service menu no problem, so I'm not sure why I couldn't the first time. Non issue now though sonI'm pleased.
But about the ripple on the top of the screen (which is really the left side because it's in Tate - I'm not sure if it was there the whole time or not, but I just realized that I but a fairly big speaker next to the makeshift cabinet that the TV is on (which is ironically made up of other speakers and an empty turntable coffin) and I'm thinking it was simply a magnetism issue. So I've unplugged the TV and moved the speaker away, I had the speaker there so I could put my Saturn on something... And because I'm an idiot apparently
Hopefully the ripple will go away over time, if not is there a way to de-magnetize the TV?
[EDiT] NVM, so I tried a different remote than the one I had been using and service mode worked, WTF?!?! Wondering if my batteries were just running low, or you have to get the timing just right or something, anyway, I'm belong relieved.
I think I just fucked my TV...
Even though I was mostly happy with the adjustments I made in the service menu, I noticed that there was a bit of warping on the top of the screen that I wanted to fix.
So I'm changing some settings, which by now I'm relatively familiar with, but I apparently went beyond the basic picture geometry category and when I made an adjustment the service menu magically disappeared... And the TV would not turn off with the remote or even the power button.... And now I can't seem to get back into service mode...FML
Any thoughts?

Re: TV Help: Overscan, Secret Service Menus, Etc
There should be a way to restore to factory settings. Not sure how though. Didn't someone post that if you physically unplugged the tv all the settings would revert - can it be as simple as that???
Re: TV Help: Overscan, Secret Service Menus, Etc
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that only resets the settings if you don't "write" the adjustments you make.
0, enter: reverts to previously saved settings
Mute, enter: saves new settings
I am trying to get the magnatism back to normal now by just turning it on for a minute, off for 30, rinse, repeat. I hope that works.
