I struggled many times to get into this from day 1 but just kept going back to CAVE/Raizing/Chorensha. Core gameplay seems solid, but looks and sounds very bland. If only bullets stood out way more, it could be a decent Psikyo clone.

You're not alone. After last year's Thunder Dragon 2 and this year's P-47 Aces I'm convinced that NMK are awesome. We should play one of their games in any single STGT.

Bouncescoring is the most retarded thing I've ever seen in a video game. The fact that this was an almost-unanimous vote and that the people in charge think it is a really great game for STGT is worrying.

Yeah, can we get a game with good survival gameplay and good score gameplay next week. So far we've had good score with bad survival, bad both, and not bad not good survival with bad scoring.

Next week has to be Espgaluda, DDP DOJ or Ketsui. So it is written.

DDP DOJ is good survival gameplay bad scoring system. ESPGaluda would probably be best for good scoring good survival. Ketsui would be better than DOJ, but I think the scoring system is too frustrating.

I would have to actually find a working ESPGaluda if it was chosen.

i'd just go with psikyo

Well, Ketsui has a good scoring system mostly with the point blank something then lockshot. But the empty lock glitch completely ruins things.

I don't see how this is worse than chaining or more counter-intuitive than suiciding.

Anyway, best game so far in the best STGT so far. If something from Cave, Psikyo or Seibu comes up next week, I'll be very disappointed.

Bouncescoring requires the player to exploit the game's bug, making the plane invisible to bullets and be in bounce frame forever until the enemy disappears. It is worse in my opinion from chaining (a lot of grinding involved) and suiciding (planning). It's more like what TAS-er community does, which is cool but not the thing that I want to replicate, like Castlevania's wall glitching to get the fastest clear.

I had a dream last night that the next game was Gumbrid 2. Please don't disappoint me, dex.

Seriously, all the games so far are games that few or none of us have experience with. That's good, but in most cases the reason we have so little experience is because the games are freaking dull. Let's choose something more interesting next time.

I like that STGT exposes noobs to more than just the standard Cave/Raizing/Psikyo fare. Honestly it would be much more dull to play the games I've already played to death.

This is hard (and a garbage too), I can't pass the first stage without bomb a lot of times.

i sort of liked this game in ten minute bursts when i played it during the week, but after a few hours yesterday and today i friggin' hate it. it's not even that hard, i guess except for maybe figuring out where to exploit ground and boss humping safely and making sure you bomb in the right spots, but if you deviate even slightly from yr rote memorization plan on stages 5-8 yr credit is basically over when some dumass helicoptor flies over where you can't see it and snipes you from behind the high score display and your game is ruined   :x

did like the alpine retreat and neuschwanstein looking levels tho, that was cool

This game for me went through phases very quickly. First few stages were awesome, humping everything was the most hilarious way to spend my time if I was already going to grind the game to bits. More fun than strawberries, and much more fun than super-robot-muscle-memory-time. Stage 3 and further was less fun because I was uh dying. Grindgrindgrind, game is now fun again. Play nonstop for hours, end up with decent score.

I play a bit more over the weekend and for the four or so hours I played, I never got through stage 6. My scores went to shit and overall I really just wasted my time. Every play just turned into a game of "guess when you'll be kicked in the balls next!".

Now to go dip my penis in glue.

Wow you guys are so lucky. This year's game selection has been like 10/10! 11/10 if only 1944 was say Brave Brade, lol. They might not be the best set of 5 games ever played in STGT (none would make my top 25), but they're all quality games (nothing too obscure) and more importantly don't have much or any existing scores posted. You can tell some real thought actually went into the selections this year, unlike last year, haha.

Caravan homebrew is like the final stroke of genius, even more so than Gokujyou Parodius over Sexy. Actually the best part of the game selection is schadenfreude at people who expected Batsugun and Ketsui as well as people who started playing shmups with Touhou dealing with oldschoolers' delight.

I'd totally participate in a NMK tourney, but I know I'd have no time these days. :(

I would say we are doing well enough.

I would also not call scoring systems based on completely random extend drops or extreme bug abuse "quality". No complaints of the other games though.

Please don't read that as a slight. I'm not talking about scoring well either (playing Touhou for score equips you to play *any* game for score more than playing for 1cc does even with the same type of game), just where the loudest complaints are coming from. I mean, it's like if someone ran a shooter tourney over at TG and then instead of 80s games they had all bullet hells. Complaints would be natural as the selection wouldn't match their preferences.

It may be hard to believe, but in past STGT years there has been way way stupider shit than anything this year. Game-long chaining, entire stage checkpoints, infinite milking, invisible deaths, nuking your score because you neglected to kill one popcorn enemy in a stage, as well as other more personal preference stuff. Playing the popular stuff in no way ensures you'll play good tourney games. 2009 was a really sweet year though, I'll admit.

Nuking your score because missing a PIXEL is worse, I think.

Well to be fair, even though I really like the game, I would never have had the balls to pick P-47 Aces for a scoring tourney. There's a big difference between even playing a game for score for fun and score for a tourney. That being said, when you step back this game will always have the most hilarious scoring system of any game.

It's all personal opinion, but missing a popcorn enemy is way more frustrating for me. I think it's psychological. But at any rate, don't we get screwed by missing a pixel all the time? That's how deaths happen in bullet hells especially, food for thought. I absolutely love Psyvariar but those games are all about pixel perfection (including the last pixel of your level-up bar even).

Glad you implicitly agree game-long chaining is worse though! ;)

So, you guys who played this in TATE, is it better all the way or does stuff get weird? Rotating your stick's PCB is easy enough, I might try this sometime when I'm bored.

I found it better for pretty much everything except for backing into the battleship at the end of stage 4, which was incredibly weird. :P

Cool. Definitely on my "arcade bucket list" now. By the looks of it, Akai Katana should be awesome in TATE as well.
