Great games with great chiptunes.

Post by Nick420 »

I have a new found love 4 all things chiptune and want this thread to fill up with games that have great gameplay and great chiptunes so anyone can check in here to get a chiptune fix.

I don't know anything about chiptune composers or anything so please leave the composers name if you know it.

I'm gonna start us off with,
VVVVVV composed by Magnus pallson

What a fantastic game! Totally love it, and the tunes! Could have been a bit more difficult would be my only gripe. If you havnt played it, check it out!

I would have put super meatboy aswell but I'm not sure if the music qualifies as chiptunes but I love the music in that game too so if you know a game with tunes like that don't hesitate to post :-D

chiptunes is anything from a videogame that doesnt use samples or recorded music? broad spectrum to choose from :)

ghosts n goblins is a fave of mine; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA0k35s71Bg and shinobi has some cracking tunes that have even been remixed into dance tunes - orig http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_6Jwgd8b6E remix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhnCCfNwa0Q

bit of a C64 chiptune guy myself. so stuff like the Quedex Loader Tune,The Myth Title theme, The Last Ninja 2's "The Mansion" loader theme and Ocean Loader v5 are all strong tracks without remixes in the first place. but i can still appreciate some remixes like Almost anything from instant remedy
It's about "realizing their actuality." And judging by the look on Jane's face, she's realized it a couple of times already.

Yeah ghosts and goblins is great, hard as nails as well; just how I like em :)
All great stuff I especially like that comic bakery tune, and that parallax tune is where it's at! :)
Keep em coming! :)

Do you know of any more modern games that use music like this? Like super meat boy or the likes. In the mean time I'm off to get parralax and comic bakery and give them a whirl, thanks :)

I think Gimmick! for Famicom has some of the best 8-Bit chiptunes. The cart was produced with an extra chip for more intense sound and channels.

A friend of mine made a Stereo Remix, check it out:

Journey to Silius, soooo good:

Title Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkWYvENgxwA
Stage 1/5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjG2ZjPqzzE
Stage 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6sjYt6EJVw (surprising length for an NES game track)
Stage 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBj0m_B-zK8
Stage 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgmH6J5GGxE

Love this game and soundtrack sooooo much

Don't normally care too much for 8-bit music, but I love the shit out of Magic Jewelry.

(give it a while to get started - especially the last parts of the mix are awesome, so skip into it if you're impatient)

This one made me lol! And seeing that electronic arts logo reminded me of a game i used to have for the megadrive...The Kings bounty! It had the most god awful music though, it just went on and on in an endless loop lol. Its actuallly a brilliant game though.

This has a nice happy ring to it :-) Il have to give the game a try.

Consarn it, DrunkNinja! You beat me to it.

But pretty much anything I've played by Sunsoft has really good tunes: Super Fantasy Zone, Silius, Batman on the Genesis and NES, Blaster Master... would their Neo Geo games count?

Rocket Knight Adventures, too. Stellar use of the Genesis soundchip. Even better than Ristar, IMHO.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

The thread needs more Linus Åkesson's chipophone.

Speaking of "great gameplay", who actually plays Raf World/Journey to Silius in this day and age? I thought it was mediocre at best. Good reminder why Contra was such a popular run 'n' gun on the NES.

Seems to be using samples, though. I doubt it's all synthesized in real time from the scratch, which is what chiptunes are kind of about.
At least to my ears the line dividing non-chiptunes from chiptunes lies somewhere between this track from GunHed and this "demake".
