Same! Same! Same! (Fire Shark)

3 lives, extends at 70K and every 200K, invulnerability off of course, and Medium difficulty. Interestingly, all versions appear to have the same dipswitch settings. Most Toaplan games try to have at least different (lower) extend settings for non-Japanese versions.

-Arcade: First you have Same! Same! Same! 1P, is a totally different game and much harder than any other version. Then you have Same! Same! Same! 2P, which Fire Shark is a slightly harder version of. Finally, you have the Dooyong's "easy" and "hard" versions based on SSS 2P. The 2P arcade versions are split by player side.
-Mega Drive: Like many of the Toaplan ports, the Japanese version is slightly harder, and all carts have both versions of gameplay.

You can get trap15's "New Ver!" hack here.

Same! Same! Same! 1P version
saucykobold - 505,620 - 04-05 - YES - MAME

This version is glorious. It's also stupendously difficult, holy mackerel. I was side-sniped shortly after I got the 16-way.

Toaplan sound samples are here, emulator's here. :) You specifically want ThunderMAME32+ (tmamep.7z); I don't think the other builds will recognize the samples.

(mod edit - link to samples removed, sorry but no direct links to copyrighted material)

Same! Same! Same! 1P version
Aquas - 628,580 - 01-06-07 - YES - MAME

First run where I got the fully powered up spread shot, that was pretty amazing but the rank went nuts. Went on to recover, beating the st. 5 boss with a level 2 Fire Weapon. That was epic: having to sweep the screen side to side to clear the popcorn, while weaving between the intermittent shots of the bosses cannon in the center. Wow!

Image

Also a note: When the large mid-sized planes rush down, shooting their hefty bursts. It seems one of these planes will contain a 1up. I don't know if it's you have to destroy 1 first, or if it's a specific plane. But the 1up is among them. They come at 2 points during the first five stages, possibly gaining you 2 extra lives.

Ha, thanks. Hellishly difficult is right--I recently save-stated to the latter half of the first loop and was kinda shocked at how hard the game gets. The city stage is brutal.

Fire Shark is easier in a couple ways. The popcorn count is lower, enemies shoot less often, bullets are a little slower, and some boss attack patterns are toned down. The Japanese version compensates somewhat for its harder difficulty by letting you have more spread bullets on-screen at once.

Edit: In Fire Shark, the entire playfield is always visible à la Strikers. Same! Same! Same! has Raiden-esque horizontal scrolling, so getting corner-sniped is a real threat.

Thanks for the reply saucykobold.
The bullet speed is going to be negligible as it speeds up on each loop on Fire Shark, but I agree that the other points you mention are going to make Same! Same! Same! a little harder.
Once you work out how to get through the last 3 stages though, multi-looping should still be possible.

Fire Shark for Genesis - Easy difficulty
Despatche - 3,145,010 - 01-09 - ON - Kega Fusion 3.64

Yet again, I wonder if there really are any regional differences. Finally got over stage 7 and then some shitty turret in stage 9 ruins everything.

From what I've noticed, ships fire a little more in the Japanese version, tested on a US cart with region changing code from long ago. Other than that, not much else.

Set this a while back on a borrowed 1p Same! pcb. Awesome version. Now I just need to find one of these pcb's for myself!

Same! Same! Same! 1P version

This game is silly.

No-miss first four stages and then I flailed the rest because I didn't practice anything after that.
Checkpoints are dumb.

That's not it, I took out the autofire-PCB and it's the same. Oddly the 2P side doesn't have this issue.
