Games and Consoles you missed out on.
Games and Consoles you missed out on.
So apparently the 3Ds recently got a price drop and that got me thinking about all the consoles and games I haven't played yet. Assuming my patience allows me to wait till the price dips low enough for stuff. ($30 a console maybe, $2 a game is what I aim for).
Here's a list of all the stuff I owned at one point (consoles-wise):
Nintendo NES (gave it to my nephew years ago)
Gameboy (Grey Brick, prior to it being stolen)
Sega Genesis (in storage, I think)
Sony Playstation (gave up the ghost/lost disc ball bearings)
Playstation 2 (currently works/fat/soft modded to play Imports, seldom play it anymore except when friends come over)
Nintendo Gamecube (in storage, but still play off and on)
Playstation 3 (current)
Playstation Portable (current)
Stuff I missed:
Atari 2600 (played at a friend's house a few times)
Super NES (missed out on a lot but emulation helped me catch up a bit as well as Square-Enix rereleases, still behind on certain titles though)
Sega Master System (I think there was exclusive stuff on this?)
Sega 32X (wasn't interested)
Sega CD (never got into Sonic CD)
Sega Gamegear (didn't care for the titles)
Amiga (????)
Nintendo Virtual Boy (I have problems playing it due to my vision, but I did try it)
3DO (tried it in a store once, forgot if it was any good)
Atari Jaguar (??? I read about it once in a magazine but that was it)
NeoGeo (wish I could get one to this day)
Sega Saturn (rented one once at Blockbuster, that was fun but brief)
Nintendo 64 (played a few titles at friend's houses over the years, but kinda lost interest)
Sega Dreamcast (played a friend's a few times, but that was short-lived)
Nintendo Gameboy Advance (played a few times, though mostly ports of older SNES games I prefer the emulators)
Nintendo Wii (played it a few times but....still...not...comfortable with it)
Microsoft X-Box (nooot really interested)
Microsoft X-Box 360 (Guilty Gear 2 Overture/Ikaruga/Samurai Spirits SEN were the only titles that garnered my attention)
Nintendo DS (played it ONCE and had fun with Tetris DS but that was it)
Nintendo 3DS (too gimmicky for my taste, but the titles seem okay)
Nintendo Wii-U (no idea...)
Playstation Vita (no idea...but I'll think about it)
To say nothing of the oodles and oodles of titles I never got to try. I'd ask you guys if some of these consoles and games I missed out on are worth the trouble of waiting for a price drop on...or just waiting for a port? Or is there some rare gems worth digging for?

There are countless incredible gaming experiences across the formats you listed, it's quite an ask to have someone note down what's worth playing for you.

yeah, if you don't care about owning the originals you might as well emulate instead of waiting for mostly impossible ports.

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
You could probably get a GBA or DS Lite for 30$ if you looked hard enough, and GBA games can easily be found for a dollar if you don't mind getting cart only.
I highly recommend picking up:
- Advance Wars 1 and 2
- Fire Emblem
- Sonic Advance
- Golden Sun
- Yggdra Union
- Riviera: The Promised Land
- Mario Kart on GBA
- Castlevania on GBA
- Metroid on GBA
etc. etc.
Advance Wars alone will give you several hundred hours if you actually try to master it.

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
I actually tried the Sonic Advance games and they really really didn't do it for me...and I liked Sonic 4 if that tells you any thing.
Golden Sun I've been meaning to get to...never got into Fire Emblem or Yggdra Union...
Played Riviera once, and I really should get the PSP version.
Never played Castlevania much except the 3D ones (PS2 ones). Never played Metroid AT ALL (except the original). Or Advanced Wars.
3DS I'm interested in Ocarina of Time remake (since it has Master Quest)...though I don't know what else was released for it. I'm eager to see what they do with the new Kid Icarus title though.
I'm interested in Castlevania Judgment for Wii, New Super Mario Bros (DS and Wii, haven't played EITHER), and possibly the Yoshi games (Yoshi's Story), and Paper Mario/Mario Kart. I'm only slightly intrigued by Super Smash Bros...but only slightly.
I'm an avid follower of the Super Dodge Ball series (that shows up every so often). And the guys behind Mischief Makers.
Oh yeah and I've wanted to try Silhouette Mirage and Nights into Dreams, and the Radiant Silvergun re-release.
There are a few other series I follow:
Guilty Gear
BlazBlue
Final Fantasy (somewhat)
Valkyrie Profile
And the occaisional shmup of course (Galaga, Space Invaders, Ikaruga, etc).

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
DS Lites don't go below 50 bucks used. If it's less than that, it's usually got a cracked screen or there's something seriously wrong with the unit. New DS Lites go from 90 to 150 depending on the colour. The black DS Lite retails for a higher amount (150) than the "metallic rose" DS (90). The cool thing about the DS is that it's region-free and can play GBA games. The 3DS is region-locked, so that pretty much ended the deal for me.Blackbird wrote:You could probably get a GBA or DS Lite for 30$ if you looked hard enough, and GBA games can easily be found for a dollar if you don't mind getting cart only.

How have you not noticed by now that everyone considers Judgment to be a load of garbage...? Yoshi's Story is also terrible. Insultingly easy even by Mario standards. Yoshi Touch & Go is alright if you're into score attack style games. Don't bother with Smash Bros, it is a waste of time to all but the biggest Nintendo circle-jerks.Blade wrote:I'm interested in Castlevania Judgment for Wii and possibly the Yoshi games (Yoshi's Story)I'm only slightly intrigued by Super Smash Bros.

Pick up a DSlite and a copy of Arika's Ketsui Death Label for that perfect pint-sized shmupping awesomeness. Is easier on the eyes and easier to play if you play it on a DS XL variant with it's bigger LCD screens.
On the GBA platform, the shmup titles of Gradius Galaxies & Steel Empire both have a super silky-smooth framerate running at 60 frames-per-second.

Play Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound on SNES via Emulation if you haven't already.
Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
I'm not totally sure what you're asking for.. almost all the systems you missed have tons of great stuff! I think if you're looking for systems where really good games can be had cheaply, I'd go for SNES and DC, and Amiga if you're in Europe (it's hard to find stuff for it in the US).

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
Just got myself a GBA SP with a handful of neat accessories. Been enjoying Kuru Kuru Kururin and Ninja Five-O. Some ports of old games are fine and all, but stuff meant to be played during very brief sessions is where it's at for my money.
Play Super Metroid with a PlayStation-style joypad I might add, or some other joypad rich in buttons. In this particular game, as well as Assault Suits Valken and Metal Warriors (which I herein recommend), keyboard just won't do (and I doubt an arcade stick would be much better for the job).Jockel wrote:Play Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound on SNES via Emulation if you haven't already.

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
In terms of missed consoles, I missed the PS2 completely (but several of the games I was interested in for it eventually got PSP ports) and really only played SNES stuff in emulation. I also didn't own a Genesis until much later on. I also skipped the DSi, but still have two DSes (regular and Lite) and never saw any reason to get another one.
Right now I'm in wait and see mode on the 3DS, and will probably just skip the PSVita. Most of my gaming lately seems to be moving back toward the PC anyway.

It was the DSi that was missing GBA capability. The regular DS and DS Lite both had it.Sumez wrote:A Lite doesn't have the GBA port

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
Master System
Game Gear
Neo Geo Pocket Color
XBox 1
MSX
Of these I only really have any desire to look into MSX stuff. If anybody knows any hidden classics for these systems that I absolutely have to play, pipe up.
There are a bunch of PS1/Saturn/NES games that I haven't played but probably should have. In particular, my knowledge of PS1 hidden gems/obscurities is pretty thin - I was strictly playing whatever garbage my video store would get at the time and it's kinda hard to go back. I also find Saturn and PS1 emulation an absolute nightmare compared to easy stuff like MAME and cart-based systems, and Amiga/C64 seems comparitively simple too. (If anybody wants to link or PM me Saturn/PS1/Dreamcast emulators with everything that will make them work perfectly with any game, I'd appreciate that!)

Re: Games and Consoles you missed out on.
Assuming the SNES joypad is a better controller to play SNES games with, which is debatable. I beat Super Metroid using all four triggers of DS2 and liked it better than the default control scheme (mapping run and toggle weapons onto triggers made quite a difference for the better). Besides, a brand new DS2 is easier to get hold of than a brand new SNES pad.

Super Metroid is the sort of game I find most playable with a PlayStation-style controller. Other examples are: Cave Story, Metal Wariors, Assault Suits Valken and Contra: Shattered Soldier. Daioh US too.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I beat Super Metroid using all four triggers of DS2 and liked it better than the default control scheme (mapping run and toggle weapons onto triggers made quite a difference for the better).
I'm also better at Castlevania: Circle of the Moon with a DS2 than GBA SP, but that's more to do with the size of my hands than the number and layout of buttons.
