I do know one here who I believe is a devout follower though, and he's great, so conflicts in religion doesn't necessarily translate to conflicts in personality.

Wow. It's 2011 and you guys haven't realised that there's a spirit plane yet?
The first thing you guys need to do is to separate your definitions of religion and spiritulism. They are superficially connected, but are not one and the same.
I don't 'like' a lot of religions either (most obviously, or maybe not so obviously, have it twisted).
But that is not to say that the spirit beings that they idolize are not real, much less suggest God does not exist.
Those beings are real alright and have existed for a very long time. As has the spirit world.
I guess I thought that this sought of meat and potatoes materialism would have died in the ass by now given the reawakening of arcane practice in the 1900's, what happened in the 60's, (no small thing), the whole obsession with witchcraft and the supernatural that has exploded into the realm of popular entertainment recently, the popularization of eastern mystical practices such as Yoga in the west etc.
Hate to sound like a cliche here but as the saying goes just because you can't see something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
PS if your waiting for an answer from the realm of science you will be waiting a very long time.
As a person with an interest in theoretical physics, its easy to see Man coming up against a brick wall trying his damnedest to bridge that void between the physical and the metaphysical, using only the tools of process science.
The witchdoctor was better equipped, though no less deceived.
Stairway to Heaven indeed

There are also the sayings just because you say something, that doesn't make it true; the apostolic palace is a sham and man is the practitioner of himself; and i am an oscar meyer wiener, but then there is also the saying ich bin ein Berliner so I think we can safely discredit the latter without having to provide any epistemological arguments for our claims.stryc9 wrote:Hate to sound like a cliche here but as the saying goes just because you can't see something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Of course, this is not to say that the efforts of Trismegistus go unappreciated. Merely that what was found in Nag Hammadi has had far-reaching consequences for any practitioner of a lay religion such as one that relies on sacerdotal methods of divine communion. For the divine is not to be found in cassocks, vestments, and yarmulkes but in how we cathect feelings of metaphysic spirituality. One might say that during our transient existence, we have no higher aim than to forge intimate relations with the godhead (which you erroneously call the spirit plane but this, as with everything, will be forgiven in time). This is simply because the teleological purpose of man is transmigration to the aforementioned godhead, where everything is awesome all the time but it smells like an overused restroom. But then again, no one ever said that entry level divinity was glamorous. I'll have my pamphlet call your pamphlet. We'll do lunch.

I can't prove unicorns and dragons don't exist, so they exist...
