Usually, the later in the auction they start, the less they (or I, in many cases) have to pay for. Someone should send them the memo.

That's the idea.), your chances of winning might be as retarded as calling in at a radio station among 100+ people and being the winning 53rd caller.

Sometimes the slightest, seemingly unannoying things annoy me, like a baby laughing or a drop of water from bad pipe...

What's wrong with that scenario though? Everyone gets a single bid, no second chances, and it's fairly secret... except of course some people will bid too early still, but a closed auction would seem to be ideal and the most rational for buyers (though yeah, you may not get bargain prices that way). As opposed to the obvious irrationality of open auctions and people outbidding each other for the hell of it, or even people raising their own bids multiple times before they even get challenged!

This can be a useful tactic if both of the following scenario applies: You have a lot of money and are giddy with making damn sure you win by a snipe. This sets up a "wall" against everyone else who looks at the illusionary "max bid" and is unaware that you actually bid higher than that. While they're nervously getting the "sorry, but you've been outbid" notification again and again, that timer will be ticking down to zero... Though I agree, anything past outbidding yourself once is stupid.

Also, I guess this is a new feature, but I've noticed that whenever I outbid someone and win the auction, I only have to pay with the price of their last bid, not the bid that won me the auction. That has to be new to Ebay.

You can only win by a snipe if your the highest bidder. A sniper can only win by a snipe if the 2nd placed person was going to bid higher after you but didn't have enough time. Therefore the chances of you getting a better deal by sniping are slightly better.

However, if someone like me comes along (YEAH ME MF!) and bids really high to start with, i've deterred your snipe ass right from the start. Its supposed to be the person with the big wallet that wins, not the person who has itchy fingers.

Yeah, people are always blowing their wad on the auction early, when all they are doing is inflating the final price of the item =P. I'm convinced that half the people bidding like this actually don't care about winning the item, they are just dropping troll bids in there to jack the price up knowing that someone who -actually- wants the item will outbid them later.

It has always worked that way (or at least very close to the beginning, back to the "AuctionWeb at eBay" days), so that you can enter your maximum bid once and then walk away instead of sitting around calling out every bid like a live auction. Back when it was founded, most users were on dialup and couldn't necessarily sit around for an hour watching the auction or just pop in to bid. It's supposed to save everyone a bunch of time and effort.

well CJD won't kill you until it gestates inside you for about 20 years. so having those little tics after neuro surgery in this case aren't gonna be little things that piss you off. they're going to be little things that make you think you're going to die a horrible death and there isn't a single damn thing you can do about it. nothing kills CJD. and that's why i'm an advocate of disposable instruments for neuro surgery. i'd rather die in any other way than wait for 20 years to have my brain suddenly melt away.

For some reason it irks me when people say it doesn't matter if languages die. To me, a language's death is an even sadder loss than a human's death, since it means the irretrievable loss of a way of thinking. It's a common misconception that dead or dying languages are somehow not as fit as living languages, but just look at Ubykh, Ainu, or Navajo. None of them are doing too well (Ubykh's extinct) but all of them are more efficient and, dare I say, probably more interesting than English.
