Had a post up about that a few days ago, kinda surprised this one caught on but that one didn't.
Don't even see any discussion in this thread of Super Aleste's game mechanics, which are interesting enough. Sort of play like a caravan game if you're quick enough.
This is got to be one of my favorite snes shmups. I really enjoy the music (greatist elevator music ever) and the fact that every weapon is fun to use.
Gotta love that scatter shot.
I also like how the bosses talk crap to you.

Ran a search on Super Aleste to see if anybody shared my thoughts that this is a better game than MUSHA, necrobumped this thread to say that I am glad that some people do. Super Aleste is so much better than MUSHA it makes me want to vomit. Vomit all over you.

My thoughts exactly when I saw the Stage 1 boss again in a later stage.

Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
I used to play Space Megaforce almost daily. I had this and Super R-Type for my SNES and I personally didn't care much for Super R-Type, so Compile got the love from me.
It does have some Caravan qualities to it, not surprising since it shares a lot in common with Blazing Lazers. The second stage is very gimmicky, but I believe it does mark the most turrets Compile stuck on one boss ever.

I love Space Megaforce. I love Blazing Lazers, and I thought this game was all that and a bit more. I wouldn't rank among the greatest shooters ever on a few technical levels, but as far as hours spent and enjoyment, this is a top five for me.

This has also been one of my faves for the SNES so far, and the only game in the SNES where I've improved much. And in case all of you were wondering, here is my 8.2 mil run on YT (high quality):mjclark wrote:After raving on about Star Soldier Vanishing Earth I took a break and started playing Super Aleste. I was surprised at how complex the game mechanics were and ended up downloading a walkthrough (http://uk.faqs.ign.com/articles/368/368760p1.html) before I could properly get my head round it.
Anyway it blows the pants off Musha but what does anyone else reckon to it?

It's my best and favorite run for this game yet, as stage 12 is where you can only milk for bigger points. 9mil is possible here, but I need a flawless run for that.

Not at all, that review is great and also enjoyable to watch.

Ultra long and boring levels. I 1cc it and felt very underwhelmed. Then again I'm not a fan of Compile STGs.

Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie. This is my favorite shmup that I have played on the SNES/SFC. I have yet to play Super Aleste or R-type 3 though.No_not_like_Quake wrote:Macross: I forget the Japanese subtitle is one of my favorite horis. I'd get a SNES just to play that... or rather, a Super Famicom.

I love the style of U.N. Squadron, and its been sitting in my box o snes games for a few months now. To be honest, though, I suck ass at the game to such an extent that I can't enjoy it.Serraxor wrote:Of the three, Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is the best. My favorite on SNES is still U.N. Its been awhile though, and I have played a lot of shmups since then. Maybe its time to revisit it. Or maybe I was doing the levels in the wrong order.

Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
It's fun. I got it off ebay a few years ago when I found out that Power Strike on the SMS is Aleste and this is some sort of sequel. Power Strike is better and tougher. Honestly, who decided that you simply power-down after a hit rather than die? At full power you can take two hits and not die
It's like they tried to balance that with checkpoints off the bat but it's too easy to obtain instant respawn lives and it just makes the game a breeze.

Western releases lack the toughest modes. If you're after a game of survival, the Japanese original is where it's at. Get's busy.

Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
Really? Never heard of this: IIRC the US version, aside from "Normal" (the easiest mode) had two "traditional" increased-difficulty modes ("Hard" and "Hyper") plus two other separate upped difficulties ("Tricky" and "Wild") that added suicide bullets. What others did the Japanese edition have?Obiwanshinobi wrote:Western releases lack the toughest modes.

Oopsie, Space Megaforce does have suicide bullets, then? So maybe I was thinking of some other Compile shmup. My bad.

See also M.U.S.H.A. and that game only has instant respawn.Honestly, who decided that you simply power-down after a hit rather than die? At full power you can take two hits and not die...
Getting hit with a special weapon only lost the special weapon and powered it down one level for the next time it was collected. One had to be hit with only the normal shots to lose a turn. Collecting another special weapon worked the same way, another hit only lost the special weapon.
So they were somewhat consistent, even if in the case of M.U.S.H.A. it makes the game a bit too easy on both Easy and Normal difficulty, while Hard is still a challenge.
Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
Both Musha and Space Megaforce are pretty sweet. They seem to be on equal playing field when it comes to overall quality in a shooter, but that's coming from a n00b who simply survives for an attempt at 1cc and doesn't really go for high scoring...at least not yet.
Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
I like this game, but I am with others in that I found the game boring. I still prefer the original Alestes over it, likewise with M.U.S.H.A. (despite that one being a good bit different).
Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
this is a general message but since you brought it up: have fun grinding those super aleste checkpoints, I will gladly accept all counterstops provided they are ALLs (and can I get a video, please?)finisherr wrote:that's coming from a n00b who simply survives for an attempt at 1cc and doesn't really go for high scoring...at least not yet

Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
This game is one I couldn't think of at the time, but it belongs in that thread "shmups with high accolades you just don't get". I bought this and felt really underwhelmed overall. Regardless of its prowess on the SNES.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Re: Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please
Flipping loved this game on the SNES when i was younger. Pic up the JAP version if your going to get any version......plus has the best box art (as 99% of JAP box art)
