And you liked Alien Resurrection too, which is also a right thing to like. Boy, was that poor scriptwriter's whining priceless. Somebody's got to take the hard seat.DEL wrote:NOTHING IS BETTER THAN PREDATOR 2

A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy. It's ok, I guess. Certainly not a bad movie, somewhat entertaining, but it doesn't "wow" me.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Watched Akira the other night.
Quick review: piece of boring shit.
There were some cool scenes, but the movie certainly would not make me want to read the books. My friend fell asleep during the SOL scene.
Other than that I've watched Ghost World; which was great, and I Spit on Your Grave, again.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Probably doesn't count (but I started this thread, so fuck y'all), but I just watched the first episode of season 5 of Doctor Who. I realize I'm behind everyone else, but this first episode is really promising--new Doctor, new writers, new directors, new look for everything. About time really! As much as I was glad to see Doctor Who get a reboot, season 2 was kinda shit, and season 4 just ran out of steam half way through. I don't know if season 5 can live up to this first episode, but I'm encourage to hear they're using outside writers (apparently Neil Gaiman wrote an episode)--and it's about time for that too! At this point, the best writers of sci-fi/fantasy/weirdness grew up with and are fans of science fiction, so why has it got to be some TV writer doing the scripts?
Well, in normal Doctor Who tradition I'm sure the next episode or two will be garbage, but this is one of the most encouraging episodes I've seen in a while.

...and now's about time for you chaps to explain to me why anything written by Neil Gaiman is stuff to be excited about. I don't get it. Seen some badly drawn comic books (Sandman) and that's about it.
I mean, Preacher is badly drawn as well, but well written at it. Gaiman, however...?

Re: Movies you've just watched
When I was an impressionable teenager who didn't know any better, I was impressed by Gaiman's book "American Gods". Finishing it years later, the ending tries so hard to be all avant-garde fuck conventions of storytelling. In other words, there are more questions than answers, absurd supernatural horseshit out of nowhere, plotholes and not a hint of a sequel to this day explaining everything.
Eh, Sandman is pretty hit or miss. I know I've seen stuff in that series that looked great, but I've also seen some stinkers and plain old boring looking drawings (Think Rex Morgan and that dreadful biblical based comic in the paper.)
The only audience I could see thoroughly enjoying his work are the people who are easily impressed with nonsensical revelations and plot twists, going "whoah MAN, WHAT A MINDFUCK! This guy is a genius!!" (I was guilty of this in high school) There's fantasy and then there's metaphysical crap for the sake of it. AG falls into the latter category. If AG is any indication of that man's later novel works, then I would dare to say that he is a charlatan.

I'm not sure Gaiman is worth being that excited about. What I said was in context of Doctor Who and how the writers seemed to have no creativity. I'm not really a fan of Gaiman, but I think a script by him for Doctor Who would be a LOT better than what they've been serving up in season 2 & 4, which all seemed like rehash.

Predator 2 is fucking voodoo magic, mon!
Really, it is the best in the series. It has a solid plot, gets right into the action from the very beginning, and shows more of the Predator than the other movies. Great movie, watched it many, many times over the years. And, it has Bill Paxton!

Predator 2 is ass and Danny Glover is crap. It's not even a discussion worth continuing. That film single-handedly killed off the franchise for like, fifteen years, never to fully recover.

Monsters.
By no means perfect, but I liked it quite a bit. It was distinctly different for a sci-fi flick, with a nice sense or realism and a fantastic location. Very well shot too.
I don't think I've ever been as impressed to learn how a low budget film was made as I was after this. The director didn't make a masterpiece, but he's a hero considering how much he put into it. Fantastic job all things considered, it looks more like $50 Million that $500,000.
Also, on a sour note, I just found out Nimrod Antal was responsible for directing Predators. It wasn't the worst film ever, but considering he debuted with Kontrol, I would have liked to see him rise above the Hollywood producer crush.
Suppose it's practically inescapable these days.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I was watching 28 Days Later and realized, how in the hell can the main character awake from a coma without medical staff giving him nutrition through I.V.s daily? It has probably been a month since the city was evacuated/the rest turned into zombies, so how could he have survived that long? That seems like a film goof to me.
Of course it's possible that he was that boy in the photograph in the middle of (London?) the city...in which case, it makes his revival even more ridiculous.

Watched Repo Man ( I got the limited edition License Plate Box version. Came in
metal container w/ soundtrack). Great movie. Fucking classic, CLASSIC punk soundtrack.
In fact, if you haven't seen Repo Man, you suck; and you need to watch it to cure your suck
because your suck will only be sucked dry by the punk, thrash, fuck you all attitude which is
Repo Man!
oh yea, saw "Enter The Void." really weird flick bout the kid in Japan doing a fuckton of drugs.
shot from his perspective.
heh, saw Critters again as well. Fucking great man. I grew up on the 80's campy trash as well.
hell that's all I watched as a kid.

payback(mel gibson) director's cut.
the most changing director's cut I've ever seen, after reading about it 30% of the movie was re shot by the studio for original release.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Yeah, Point Blank is an excellent movie, but I don't like how they turn Parker into a good guy when he was a irredeemable sociopath in the books. That's why the studio and Gibson fucked with the original cut and script of Payback so much. They figured they had to soften the edges and turn the guy into a hero. They figured how could Mel Gibson play a woman beating career criminal who planned to rip off and kill one of his partners in crime and had the unfortunate luck of being beaten to the punch?CMoon wrote:Haven't seen it or read Parker, but Point Blank is still a damn fine movie (though apparently a very different adaptation of that same story.)Acid King wrote:That's a great movie. Re: Movies you've just watched
Just watched this on your recommendation. It was a pretty poor film.rapoon wrote: I know I'm hyping it up but "I Saw the Devil" is excellent. If you liked any film in Chan-Wooks vengeance trilogy, you will like it.
warning though: it's pretty gruesome.
It was watchable, but rambling and pointless. The Koreans tend to make good films these days, usually of a higher standard than Hong Kong and Japanese films, certainly, but this wasn't very good at all.
It started well, but divulged into a totally superficial farce with no direction whatsoever. It began as a sinister, terrifying film with a revenge hook, but the director didn't know what he wanted. It couldn't figure out if it was an action movie, high speed thriller, cat and mouse, or horror gore fest. Unfortunately trying to do all at once is a recipe to fuck up your movie.
The main actor (the cop) was useless, he couldn't act at all, and there was basically no real plot. It felt as though it was made up as they went along, and Christ was it long... felt like it was going on forever, I just wanted it to end already.
It had no message either, although I could see he was trying some kind of "become a monster to catch one" biz, but it just felt totally confused.
I also find that Koreans (and Japanese) tend to be a little obsessed with graphic ultra violence. I'm not sure if I like that much to be honest, especially if there's no point or artistry to the film. In Chan Wook Park's stuff he's a very good director, and the violence doesn't overpower the film, but in this it went from being a tense serial killer thing in the first half hour to a gratuitously violent and aimless bloodbath. He also threw in a lot of very sexual imagery, which was uncomfortable considering the subject matter and makes me wonder what's on the director's mind.

There was even a very risque sex scene, completely inappropriately, in the middle of the film, which really jarred with what was meant to be going on elsewhere.
It was multifaceted for all the wrong reasons. If you like Chan Wook Park's films (and his revenge trilogy in particular) don't watch this, it's got absolutely none of the class.

Re: Movies you've just watched
The director (Jee-woon Kim, very well known director) intended for the film to have a very straightforward
and simple plot. What makes the films unique is instead of simply putting a bullet in the villains (Min-sik Choi) head, he plays with
him throughout the entire film. We don't watch the protagonist aimlessly run around for 90 minutes searching for clues. Instead,
scene by scene you watch these men tear each others lives apart and inflict as much pain as possible on one another. The protagonist,
in the process of exacting revenge, slowly destroys himself and compromises those around him: yes, in order to kill a monster,
you must become a monster. You know exactly what's going on within the first 15 minutes of the film and it never stops; the tension
constantly escalates then finally climaxes at the very end. The film is relentless, uncompromising and unsettling. There are no twists or
cliffhangers. It's a brutal thriller that's exceptionally long. I *thought* that anyone who enjoyed the Vengeance Trilogy would
love this film. Guess not. Glad DEL liked it.
Min-sik Choi is fucking incredible as the psychopathic villain; his performance is reason enough to see the film. The protagonist,
Byung-hun Lee (A Bittersweet Life, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, J.S.A. <-- Chan-Wook film) doesn't give his best performance
but it's hardly shit. The director knew exactly what he was doing with the film and the direction he was going.
"I Saw the Devil" is loaded with gratuitous violence and brutality. That's a valid criticism of the film. But those scenes exist to make
the viewer uncomfortable and to sympathize with the protagonist. Criticizing the films violence then recommending any film from the
"Vengeance Trilogy" is silly. Oldboy, Lady/Mr. Vengeance are all littered with over the top violence. It's hardly art. Chan-Wook
and Jee-woon flood your eyeballs with these terrible scenes to get a point across: sympathy.
I firmly stand by my recommendation, regardless of whether or not you enjoyed the "Vengeance Trilogy." I think anyone considering
seeing the film should read other reviews; there's a laundry list of amateur and "professional" reviews praising the film. There are also plenty
of reviews bashing the film for it's pointless brutality and vapid plot.

Re-watched an old favorite for the first time in years: Miracle Mile. Crazy movie that you're better off knowing nothing about before watching it for the first time. First time I saw it I was in grade school... Traumatized for a good while, but it opened my eyes.
Speaking of movies from my past, another that I have to rocommend is Near Dark. Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack to it (and Miracle Mile). Probably the most realistic Vampire movie out there, plus it has half the cast of Aliens!
I went to the theater and saw Tree of Life. Not something everyone would enjoy, but I found it extremely moving - not to sound cheesy, but the premise of loosing family members is one that I can relate to. Just an incredible movie that I'm sure will receive tons of recognition.
