I kinda assumed that people accepted SWR was vastly inferior but stuck with it anyway for whatever reason. Oh yeah, and if Touhou is too slow for you, Toaplan and Psikyo will always be there to pick up the pace~
I've played some of those shmups and they are pretty fun at first but their patterns are usually not very original and creative. Though, I might not have played some of the best ones. As for the IaMP SWR thing, i haven't heard any such discussions either. I always found SWR better because of its easier to use controls but really, i'm not that fond of fighters so i usually just leave any fighting game related discussion to the people who actually play them.

It's kind of interesting (and kind of hilarious) to hear about but I'm not really interested in learning how to do that stuff, at all. I can enjoy just loading them up and shooting some stuff, though, so whatever!
Yeah its the same for me. Just here to shoot some stuff. I also agree entirely with your post - Seemingly good systems that unfortunately gets broken really easy and it seemingly happens every time graze get's involved. Or spirits as is the case with TD.

Obviously. If you don't like Touhou you must be an idiot right? :P

Touhou scoring systems are broken, but at least they aren't bloated like Hellsinker's.

- Get rank high
- Blow off boss parts
- Graze the shit out of everything
- Don't bomb
- Activate Shrine of Farewell late

There, that's the scoring system. Now if you want bloated, Imperishable Night's scoring system would take me at least 3 paragraphs.

You forgot don't die.

And IN's isn't 3 paragraphs.

Shoot unfocused when human during most stage parts and sometimes midbosses and bosses
Supergraze as Youkai against midbosses and bosses
Use Youkai to avoid killing familiars at the wrong time
Cancel bullets with proper timing for familiar kills
Try not to die or bomb
Make sure you're at high human gauge when PoCing

Then why are there all those purple gems everywhere? They're useless. That's what I mean by Hellsinker's scoring being bloated: it has useless stuff that doesn't add any depth.

While I havnt spent enough time with either games to comment on their scoring mechanics, ive always thought of the more ancillary elements of scoring to be something that most ppl can ignore if they wish and concentrate on the meat and potatoes of the score system. I imagine it would affect top tier scorers but im not one of them.

EoSD (6) out of nothing more than personal preference. It was the game that got me into shmups, it's nice and simple yet visually clean, it just feels homely to me.
