Finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes this evening. Came for the massive space battles, stayed for the wicked intrigues and endearing characters (and even massiver space battles). Not often I'll watch/read a full series on a whim, but this was excellent from start to finish.

Finished Michiko e Hatchin couple of days ago.

+ great setting (alternate reality version of Brazil) and lots of detail
+ interesting characters
+ excellent animation

- story a little bit boring sometimes
- somewhat anticlimactic ending

Overall very enjoyable series though, that I'd recommend to fans of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Originalz and I scoured the Mandarake building in Akihabara a few weeks ago. We were talking about how anime/manga protagonists just aren't the same as they once were. Look at Space Adventure Cobra, Hokuto no Ken, Jojo's bizarre Adventure, Golgo 13, Jubei from Ninja Scroll, etc. The quintessential badass type. You just don't see such protagonists anymore. They're only supporting characters at best. Yet there is still such love for those classic characters and you still see them quite a lot. Why are anime/manga heroes now all a bunch of whiny pussies?

Hey, I've done that with a sock before.

Hey Obiwan, do you think you could not post stuff like that in the forum? I was reading this thread at work yesterday and a woman almost saw that pic when she came by to speak to me.

So I've edited it, but hey, don't browse through the "Awesome stuff" thread, unless you want to get caught looking at Deathsmiles artbook cover or something like that.

Downloaded both A Hundred Billion Stars and Spiral Labyrinth as soon as I finished ep110 of the main series. Definitely the next two series I'll be watching!

Can anyone recommend Kiddy Grade? I just found out that this is a genuine SF space opera series. Actually, I was in a comic book shop yesterday, looking at Bome figures, and the guy was selling them half off. I bought the Kiddy Grade one (actually had two figures inside) and I read about the series on the back. I've heard the title before, but I don't know anybody who's seen it. The series description reminds me a bit of Dirty Pair.

Finally got round to watching all of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
I like. This is how big mecha anime should be - ridiculous, over-the-top, exciting.

Sky Odyssey, with various kinds of clouds as the start screen's backdrop, just reminded me of 5 Centimeters Per Second. I know a climatologist who was greatly impressed by the accuracy Makoto Shinkai depicted the sky with in relation to seasons and weather.

Planetes takes a while to pick up a good pace (6-10 episodes), but then it becomes an excellent series.

I did not have any problems with the pacing of Planetes. If anything, more sensational bits were the weak link as it was very deus ex machina in places. Still, an excellent show all around.

Finished Angelic Layer and I'm near the end of Haibane Renmei. The latter reminds me of Tove Jansson books most (much like Kino no Tabi) and - to an extent - of the Earthsea tetralogy. Le Guin's writing was more likely the inspiration, though.
I like Haibane Renmei better than Mushishi or Spice & Wolf (to name shows with similar, low key production values). Ootani's music makes up a bit for the crude animation. Character design isn't porny (a refreshing sight these days). Overall it's a show that, despite looking cheap, displays some class in the presentation department.
Funny how Kino no Tabi and Haibane Renmei are written by the blokes. In western cultures it's usually women who make up worlds like that and get away with it. If Yoshitoshi ABe has more stories to tell, I wish somebody paid him to do so.
P.S. Just read that he admitted one of novels by Murakami had influenced him. Oh dear. Accidentally it's the only Murakami book I've read to date. To be honest, I suspected this might have been the case, but fortunately Haibane Renmei is way better than that book.

The first episode of Claymore was riveting; cool baddies, an intriguing titular character, and stunning animation. I only wish that the rest of the characters didn't look so laughably crude. They reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJYxCSXjhLI

I also would like to recommend Chrono Crusade, but I can't be bothered right now to explain why it's an awesome show, as I am in a hurry.

And last but not least, try Full Metal Panic. It's on Netflix right now (along with the sub-series Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu). You'll thank me later.

Interesting. I haven't posted here yet...

So, I'm kinda the vice-president and bringer of anime for my local anime club, and I'm allways looking out for new shows.

I'm sure a lot of you have seen it, but The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my favs. Also, Pani Poni Dash is good if you want something to watch when your drunk.

Want to watch a dramatic anime but at the same time, don't want to see the Rebuild of Evangelion until it's completed. Got any suggestions to hold me over?

Totally worth a go. In my book Gintama - the ultimate shounen series - and the first Suzumiya Haruhi season (as aired on the TV, not enhanced and reissued) were two most remarkable shows of the year 2006, closing my favourite period in the history of anime. Things got "meh" after those two instant classics.
Pretty much everything about Gintama is ultimate. Words don't do justice.

Eureka Seven (gets quite dramatic from the episode 09 onwards).

I'm doing the same thing with Rebuild. I've only seen the first one, but I'm holding off until the damn thing has it's own collection.

As far as "dramatic" anime goes, you really can't go wrong with Elfin Lied. Assuming by "drama", you mean tragedy-filled. Ninja Scroll also kinda falls under that category.

If you want something dramatic, you could try Gankutsuou. It has a very interesting art style, and it's based off of the classic story The Count of Monte Cristo.

It's been almost three years since I last went to a movie. Maybe if they didn't charge two month's worth of rent for a ticket I'd go more often. wtf Japan.

I bought the first DVD several years ago, watched it once, then sold it. From what I saw, Kiddy Grade is one of the most bland girls-with-guns shows around.

For what it's worth, the series takes a while to hit its stride since it spends a lot of time getting the audience familiar with the characters before actually starting up the main storyline. Though, if you didn't care for the characters at least then the rest of the show probably wouldn't have had much effect on you anyway.

That's what I've read about Kiddy Grade. My friend owns the series on DVD, so I'll just borrow it from him. Thanks!
