Since always? cosplay is practically synonymous with fanboyism. There's no question there. None at all.
Yeah, I'm not sure how going to lengths to learn theme tunes to cartoons in a language you don't speak, dress cross-gender as characters from said shows, and go to a communion of holy anime worship could be construed as anything except extreme fanboyism?

Let's not get started on this though, weeaboo culture is one topic I wouldn't mind nailing to the cross. :)

Yes, that's a good synopsis.

The more sensible arguments in this thread all seem to hit a similar wall: Geekiness exists in many facets, but not universally so. There are degrees of nerdiness (as RNGmaster pointed out), ranging from a middle-aged family man with a toy car collection to a man in his thirties sitting down for a My Little Pony marathon.

There's a distinct difference between those two pursuits. On one hand, the toy car collector is rekindling a fondness of objects from childhood memory. But the MLP Brony convention travelling hippy is immersing himself not in fond childhood memories, but in the childhoods of the current generation. In a broader sense, he's fraternising in the interests of children, and perhaps even more oddly, crossing a gender gap that wasn't even acceptable when he was a kid. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more adult males watching MLP than there are young boys.

If those kids give you a 'WTF' face, and ask why anyone would want to watch a 'girls show', you've got some answering to do.

"Fanboy" is a derogatory term implying lack of criticism against one's object of affection. It is far cry from cosplaying, let alone "synonymous".
As for singing songs in languages you don't speak, it is perfectly normal for people who like to sing whatever song they happen to be fond of. It's got even less to do with fanboyism than cosplaying, if that's even possible.

Alright, I just watched the first two episodes. Cute horses/unicorns/pegasuses, ok. Final Fantasy-style epic quest thingy, okay. It seems intelligent. Maybe not my cup of tea, but apparently the pilot two-parter isn't indicative of the overall feel of the show? I'll give the other episodes a try later.

I didn't know about this series until tons of people on the AnimeNation forum started using these ponies as their avatars. Now that I've watched it, I can see the appeal. It's a clean-cut show, and a far cry than the level of crap that Cartoon Network has stooped to lately. I loved Powerpuff Girls, but I guess that's an easy show to defend. Need to defeat the city from a giant crab-type monster? Yank its arm off and impale it with its crab pincer! That show had so much blood, dismemberment, death, and destruction that it was pretty wild for a cartoon that was supposed to be for little girls. The show was a clever critique on both Japanese kaiju movies and comic book superheroes.

So is it normal for an average grown guy to like MLP? No, not at all. But your average grown guy only cares about sex, sports, and brainless action movies. Is it creepy? I personally don't think so. It's not creepy for guys in Japan to identify with cute characters, at least. Now, drawing pictures of these ponies in sexual situations.... that is not only creepy, but just plain sick.

Some guys on here just can't comprehend how any adult males ever find out about shows like MLP. I can say that at least a part of that can be attributed to the fact that some of us are fathers. I think I've seen every single episode of Ni Hao Kai Lan because of my daughter. She loves that show. The plots of those episodes aren't nearly as engaging as MLP is, apparently. It's still a cute show. An adult who may have a Kai Lan figure on his desk is not creepy. Somebody who draws scandalous pics of Kai Lan as fap fodder, however, needs to have his head checked. And something in the back of my mind makes me think that it's possible such images may even exist. I shudder at the thought. Literally.

Yeah, the pilot isn't representative of the show as a whole (but still great). Watch at least the first five episodes, if you don't like the show after that you're probably never going to like it.

@Skykid I did think it was funny, that was why I was laughing, lol. Guess it just didn't come across well over the internet.

If you boil it down, it's basically just your typical medieval fantasy adventure story with griffons and wizards and dragons and stuff, except you replace men with ponies, unicorns and pegasi.

I haven't read many fantasy stories where the protagonists aren't normal humans (or humanoid races) in a fantasy world, so I find that element of it somewhat refreshing, actually.

Just looked this up. The wheels of industry are prepping those kids already!
So you're teaching your daughter Chinese?

Their heads are shaped nothing like horses.
Like some sort of pseudo bizzaro anime cat human.

I thought renardqueenston's avatar depicts a shark's face (before I even knew about the show in discussion).
Speaking of which, one of users who complained about MLP avatars infesting the internet, used to have a photo of a cat as his own avatar.
