Not just thematically but artistically in regards to animation with the whole computer thing etc. Obviously nothing's gonna compare with Transformers, M.A.S.K., Brave Starr, Thundercats, Loony Toons or anything else from that era.
You've got your nostalgia goggles on, my dear. As much as I treasure watching GI Joe and Transformers as a child, many of those episodes were rather poorly scripted. Yes, the amount of excellent cartoons out there today aren't as numerous as when we were growing up, but there are some pretty cool animated shows made within recent years.
Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes is an awesome show, but unfortunately it only lasted one season because Cartoon Network wizzed it down their leg.
Avatar: The Last Airbender shows all the stupid Dragonball and Naruto fans what a decent kung fu-style storyline should be like.
Wolverine and the X-Men was superb, and it's ongoing story arch was amazing. It only lasted one season as well because Disney would rather let it die than to allow a Marvel license to continue running on Nicktoons and not Disney XD. However, Disney XD is now showing
The Avengers: World's Mightiest Heroes and this show is pretty cool, from what little I've seen of it so far.
BTW, does anyone remember Exo Squad from the early '90s? That was a real cool Robotech-inspired show that was American-made.

It's not like that at all. If they were singing "I Wanna Be Sedated," then yeah, you have a point. But no, these bands are singing songs about friendship, washing your hands, insects are cool, playing with balloons, let's solve the problem together, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, etc. It's great stuff.
