Some of your most embarassing video game moments?

Post by nsonthi77@hotmail.com »

I like to share a couple here....

I remembered back when Street Figther 2 was popular in the arcade, I waited anxiously for the SNES version to come out so I could practice and tried to become a master of SF. So I finally got the game when it first came out and mastered my Ryu moves and combos. I was like cool, i'm gonna go down to the arcade and show those guys how good I am, and with so many people surrounding the SF2 cabinet, I was pretty hyped up. I went up against this dude who was the SF2 king at the time where I live, thinking I could take him...boy, was I wrong! He basically schooled me like I was a little kid that just started playing SF. The crowed were looking at me like I had no business being there.

Here's another one..

I'm not sure how many of you that bought the expensive Turbo CD when it first came out, but it came in this redicuoulsy huge box that was 10X's size bigger then the CD player itself! I was 12 at the time and begged my parents to get me one and my little brother helped me by crying hopelessly. My parents finally gave in and drove us to the mall to buy the CD. My mom wrote them a check while I hold this big ass Turbo CD box that I could barely see in front of me...I had to stretch my neck far to the left to see clearly . I had to walk around the mall with the big box where I stick out like a sore thumb. Man, that was embarasing, but at the end, it was worth all of the trouble! I still use it today to play my music cds...

Arcades are definately a prime place for embarrassment, especially with all the music/dance games out nowadays. One time I was playing dance dance revolution and was practicing hitting the last arrow on a certain song by handstanding on it. I slipped and hit my head against the bar. But that happened like 4 times so I eventually got used to it...but i did forget my phone number and subtraction.

Another time(trying to do the same move) I was wearing pants that were really frayed on the bottoms, and I planted one foot on the cuff of the pants, threw the other foot up in the air first, and ripped my pants leg on the side, all the way up to my knee. That was probably more embarrasing than hitting my head.

Also, one time I was at a game shop during the dreamcast days and they were getting rid of some promo standees, and I saw a Shenmue one that was almost as tall as me. They let me have it...but I wasn't done shopping yet so I carried the huge thing around the mall, looking like a complete tool. I still have it in my room too :o

Getting distracted by a cute girl in the arcades and losing a life(at least two different occasions I can think of). Trying to show off because she was watching, and losing a life. The worst is she saw it.

Distracted by a cute girl again, and hitting the bomb button instead of the shot button.

While totally focusing in a shmup, have someone sneaked their hand in to place a quarter on the machine, and in that one crucial moment as their hand crossed into your vision, gets distracted, and either get hit/disoriented/lose a chain/something bad.

The above belongs in the shmup embarrassing thread also.

Metriod Prime - After beating a boss(I think it was in the snow area) with little energy left, then while trying to go back to the save point gets hit by some wimpy enemy and have to fight the boss again. Very annoying.

Girls over the age of 12 don't hang around arcades. Sheesh, who are you trying to fool?

Perhaps that's the case where you live, Andi, but here in Austin I remember quite a few cute punk rock college chicks hanging out at Einstein's. In fact, I remember dragging a few with me to play games there back in my college days (seems like a million years ago... ).

very wrong. I meet cute, 19+ girls in arcades on a daily basis (I go to one arcade or another on a daily basis).

a few weeks ago I was trying to 1cc House of The Dead (an old light gun game), and was on my last leg (life), when a really cute girl came in and took up the 2nd player gun. We both stood really far from the screen and shoot quite calmly instead of frantically, and we ended up at the second boss of the last stage.

I had to say she has skills, and was about to talk to her, but then I saw that she was with some guy playing some sort of fighting game. So I said "hi, that was good" and left.

actually, one more thing to add to that story above. I died because I was trying to cover fire for her side of the screen. I feel absolutely embarrassed afterward especially since I start to think about asking her out for lunch after the shooting session, but we still made pretty good progress for 2 credits after all, so I tried to smile it off.

I remember playing on a Galaga machine at the local bowling alley, and at one point (I was on like stage 40), I had a couple spectators behind me. Not knowing anyone was there, and being the disgusting slob I am, I burped quite loudly, turning around seconds later to see disgusted faces on my fans.

Yeh... Once in a while there are some cute Asian girls who go to the arcade here, but they're always arm-in-arm with some other cute Asian dude.

Once in a while they might notice some loser looking Asian guy hunched over the ESP RaDe (wow, people still play these shooter thingies? Is that Raiden?) cabinet, but they'll just go back to saying sweet sweet cavity-inducing lovey happy lovey encouragement to the KoF playing dude. I still die when I know they're watching though. Oh yeah, did I mention I'm bitter?

Uuuurg, there are NO arcades in this town! Except for maybe Funworks and Boomers...but I don't think they had any shmups.

Me? First time playing GGXX in the arcades. I got stomped...I'm way better with a controller in general.

I need to find a good arcade in this town...Maybe I should go to Vegas...or Japan.

Nearest arcade worth visiting near me, is 70 miles away in London. Sad but true. The bad: this means there is no arcade gaming to be had. The good: it's difficult to be publically schooled when you can't play with anyone.

Ok, first off, that should read: "I still use it today to play turbo cd games". If thats all you use it for I would gladly take it off your hands

As for embarassing moments...nothing like dying on that first goomba in Super Mario Bros. or that first bullet in Gradius.

Ahh...

Back in my school days, I knew this "andrew" kid. We weren't really friends but we just knew eachother by face. Anyway, he played X-men vs. Streetfighter alot. That happened to be one of the games I fell in love with during the late 90's.

So we took turns sometimes. God knows why, but he was really pissed off one day and said "if you die, you're going to have to pay for this" as I'm using storm with FIVE FUCKING PERCENT of health left.

So I died. He grabs for my wallet. I run right out of the plaza and didn't stop until 2 blocks away.

Unless the arcades are strategically located in a college student union. :) Between games it's heaven to watch girls leaning over to shoot pool.

Girls there are scarily good at puzzle games.

@iatneH - I feel your pain. Except here they're cheering for their Initial D dudes. It's funny how I am still on the same game, while the Initial D ones have gone through a few races already. I doubt a girl can say lovey happy lovely encouragements to me for up to/morethan 20 minutes while I am playing a shooter. :)

DDR spawns the good-ol embarassing moments in the cades, especially when you do so good you drawing in a shitload of crowds literally full of hot asian girls. (Which wouldn't be all taht surprising because the arcade I go to is inside an ALL-ASIAN MALL)

So there are the other embarassing moments in the arcades that has happened to me.

-In Drummania, when I'm playing Least100Sec on Extreme, somewhere in the middle of the song, my drumsticks fly out of my handsand lands meters away from where I am so I'm like
"FUCK" and played the rest of the songs with my hands whacking the drumpads.

- Beatmania IIDX: people like the song you're playing, you screw up a note and the song suddenly sounds horrible beyond belief. lol.

Nothing too embarassing shmup-wise, other than the fact that slamming right into a bullet i Raiden DX, and dying while trying to get a simple Volcanon in Gw2 hurt.

Yo Icecap Veiwin,

That sounds like Modesto, CA location...it has both a Funworks, a Boomers and a Incredible John's pizzeria/arcade. The last true arcade place that closed down in Modesto was the "Regency Game Palace"...man, that arcade was "THE" place to chill at if arcade/pinball were your thing. Unfortunately, the Regency Game Palace closed it's doors forever in June 1994 because of lots of drug dealings took place inside there. The Regency Game Palace had some bitchin' cool arcade shmups like: Raiden II, Three Wonders, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Vapor Trail, Turbo Force, Neo-Geo MVS Viewpoint, Star Blade, amongst other arcade games available in the early 1990's.

Another Modesto, CA area arcade by the name of "Electric Underground" (which later changed locations and went by a different name as "Nickel Play" as all arcade games & pinballs took only nickels as form of currency) appeared in Spring of 1994 which had some cool arcade shmups as well: Donpachi, Viper Phase-1 U.S.A., Strikers 1945, R-Shark, and even Neo-Geo MVS Blazing Star made an appearance in February 1998 until Nickel Play lost it's lease and closed it doors forever in mid 1998. Nickel Play was another cool arcade to go play arcade shmups if they were your thing.

At the Boomers location in Modesto (when they were first known as Camelot Amusement Park...when they 1st opened up, they had an AirBuster shmup upright and later the next year, a Twin Eagle II shmup upright -- but that was in June of 1993).

The Funworks location in Modesto, CA used to have a single Raizing/Capcom shmup vertical-screen upright of Dimahoo but later it was removed...perhaps it was re-located to Turlock, CA location?

If you want to play some arcade shmups locally in Central Valley of California, head on down to Strikers Zone International in Manteca, CA to play some Raiden Fighters or Strikers 1945 II upright arcade cabinets. Yep, they're there alright.

I've picked the same song twice in a row on Drummania by accident hundreds of times.

Annoying, to say the least.

I had gotten good at Power Drift at one time to the point where I could get all 1st place finishes 90% of the time. Getting anything less than a 1st place (gold trophy) on any track turned the run into absolute dogshit, being a mortifying experience especially if there were crowds. It was almost bad enough for me to walk away from the game.

Regarding Konami's Guitar Freaks, I can usually do fairly well in Expert mode until that Extra Stage song LUCKY?STAFF comes up. This song is said to be rated at 8 stars, though IMO it really deserves 10. After kicking all kinds of ass on Jazzy Cat, LA Rider, and Dry Martini, I end up blowing this track with plenty of POORs and BADs flashing on screen.

Eclipse from GF 2nd mix is a lot easier even if it carries the same 8-star rating. I can pass Eclipse with relatively few misses. Forget LUCKY?STAFF though.

On Tekken Tag Tournament I had one bastard of a challenger who was trashtalking and just didn't know when to shut the hell up. He didn't do just a little here and there- it was incessant. He won about four matches against me, but the next match saw me utterly decimating him. His trashtalk had annoyed me to the point where I could not resist gloating after this victory (gloating usually isn't my style- this is the one exception).
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Embarassing? Walking into an arcade while I just happened to be wearing my full-length leather duster, then, without thinking about it, starting to play Silent Scope. After about three levels it hit me how that must look to bystanders. That was a good day though, since a friend of my cousin was saying how he was god at Marvel vs. Capcom. He payed to get his ass handed to him three times in a row.

Today I went to yet another random arcade, there was Target Terror (light gun) and some racing games. There was nobody there except the 6 year-old kid who always hang out there early in the morning.

Well, there is also a cute latino-ish/italian-ish looking girl going alone. She sat down at the racing game with the kid, and although I know I suck terribly at racing games, I sat down to the car beside her.

She placed 2nd, I placed 35th... She smiled really cutely at me after looking at my appalling rank though.

I had a chance to redeem myself later though, as we switched to the light gun game and I cover fire for her all the way through 3 stages until I had to run to work, and I didn't even die yet.

today,

I met the girl that I said above again, along with the same 6 year old kid who always hang out there.

We play some racing, then some shmups (1941 I think)

And she was sick today so she walked out a bit for fresh air, I strolled out with her, and so was the kid.

And the little devil shouted "he loves you!!!" as I looked at her. I coughed outloud when I heard that, but she didn't seem to hear it, or maybe pretended that she didn't.

Either way I'm doomed :D

Getting badly beaten in Tekken Tag Tournament at this arcade near my house. I thought pretty highly of my playing skill at the time, as I regularly beat down my friends and relatives when playing this game. I did pretty good against a lot of the players, but then someone who was actually good at Tekken showed up and kicked my ass with Hwoarang and Baek.. it was sick. I could do nothing but block and gamble on low parries, occasionally getting in a low jab. No big combos, he just kept stuffing bite sized chunks of ownage down my throat.

It was as painful as the time I discovered that I sucked at Warcraft II, but with more observers.

Well not quite embarrassing, but surely funny…

Back in 1995 my friend (Who is a pumping iron guy) & I, were trying to 1’CC Raiden II at the local arcades & we were both tapping the fire buttons real hard & fast in order to maintain the fully powered Green Plasma Lasers in a snake form!
At this point the arcade cabinet was shaking like mad & was easily visible from the bar & everybody started staring at us including some chicks from the bar! ;)

Soon we drew a crowd around us wait for the arcade cabinet to collapse or the joysticks to snap.

We managed to complete it with two credits.
