Suggest some shmups for a new psp owner?

Post by Emuser »

Hey all, was wondering what are some good suggestions for shmups for my psp, whether they be from umd(iso lol), emulator, homebrew, etc. I hacked my psp and got Blazing Star, Last Resort, Metal Slug, and a bunch of Genesis shmups running, but can anyone suggest anything else?

Tactics Ogre, Knights in the Nightmare, Riviera: The Promised Land, Yggdra Union ...wait, we weren't talking about JRPGS =P?

In seriousness, I don't know of very many shooting games on the PSP. Let's see...

Darius Burst
Every Extend Extra
R-Type Command
Space Invaders Extreme

Without having played any of these personally, I couldn't say whether they are any good or not.

There's Star Soldier and Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting, which are decent, not great though. At least they support tate, lol.

Parodius and Gradius collections are essential.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Glad to know it just isn't me having a hard time thinking of psp shmups, I guess it really is lacking outside of hacking. Gradius collection is a probability in the near future whenever I get tired of ps2 Gradius V.

PSX games you can buy from the Japanese store:
R-Types
R-Type Delta
Sonic Wings Special (also in the US store)
Zanac X Zanac (I suggest getting busy to Zanac Special Version - easy to overlook, which is a shame)
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

How do I switch to the Japanese store? I really want R-Type Delta and Zanac x Zanac.

WHAT

AS AWESOME as this sounds, I think I'd have to get used to holding the psp literally vertically to play DDP, Esprade and whatnot right?

you'll be surprised how quickly you get used to it - it's uncomfy af first but i was able to do it quite easily.

and just to show what it looks like, someone has a 'tube up running in tate

here's Dimaho running tate (theres no music corruption - some reason this users vid screwed up a bit)

Maybe I'll just stick with hori shooters on this psp, I just can't get into tate'd verticals on a psp. No big deal since I could just play them on my computer if I really wanted to.

You'd just simply open an new account on your PS3 and select JPN as your country of region. It might get a bit trick navigating around with some pages during intial sign-up (since it's entirely in Japanese). There're a few tutorials how to sign up for an Japanese PS3 account with the sign-up pages with English translations to help you out. Once you're signed up, it's smooth sailing on the JPN PSN site with some cool JPN PS3 game demos to D/L, etc.

Then you'd want to buy some JPN PSN points to be able to d/l your favorite PSX games off of the JPN PSN site & onto your PS3/PSP. The NCSX.com site sells them from time to time.

It's pretty slick running CPS2 emu of Progear No Arashi on a PSP. Sure beats have to lug around a real CPS2 A+B board set of Progear + a micro supergun & a mini RGB monitor setup any ol' day.

the 2 shmups I currently have from the PSN store are Flying Hamster and Strikers 1945 plus portable. though the Strikers port has taken out the boss music. dunno why they did it though.

You should check out the huge library of shmups on Genesis and Snes. You should also check out these emulators CPS1PSP, CPS2PSP, and MVSPSP. I own a PSP also and the amount of shooters you can play on this thing is amazing also including PS1 games. :D

I play:
Soldier Collection
Gradius Collection
Parodius Collection
Final Burn Alpha (DDPDOJ, Espgaluda, Ketsui etc)
CPS2PSP (Giga Wing, 19XX, 1944)
having trouble remembering what else.
but yeah, fun for all the family :D

R-Type Command is also known as R-Type Tactics and is not a shoot-'em-up game like the other R-Types. It's a strategy game. I made the mistake of buying it without even reading what genre it was *facepalm*

For the PSP-3000, I have:

PC-Engine Collection: Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (the 3rd game is a shoot-'em-up)
Gradius Collection
Parodius Portable
Salamander Portable
Twinbee Portable

Hours and hours of fun. I didn't know you could hack the 3000s... hmmm.

The Nintendo DS also has a few, decent shoot-'em-ups. It's too bad I missed my chance at getting the Ketsui game for it...

There should be a lot more shmups on the PSP than there are. The entire Darius catalog for one.

yep. look up 6.20, 6.35 or 6.39 PRO-B. it's a temp firmware though so you have to restart it every time you cold reboot the PSP.

wasn't aware Ketsui / DDP DOJ ran under FBA on PSP - okay, they aren't perfect to put it mildly, but hell - you can still play them at least

Bumping this thread because I just found out about Ketsui/DOJ/Espgaluda on PSP. What version of FBA are you people using? Because I can't get Ketsui to work, the backgrounds look alright but all the sprites are completely scrambled. There is a video on Youtube of someone playing Ketsui on PSP but I can't tell the version because it's in Japanese. Could it be my rom?

that sounds like a rom issue possibly so clear your ket.cache and change the rom? though i use this version of FBA

I love playing Xexex on the Salamander PSP collection!

If we're talking shmups, shouldn't this be in the on-topic forum?
