Which shooter theme do you like best?
Which shooter theme do you like best?
Decided to fiddle around with the poll function a little bit.
Obviously look at the question from an entirely superficial standpoint: Regardless of gameplay, what's your favorite "setting" for a shooter?

Really surprised about the lack of military themes interest.
I have nothing with military or wars or whatever, but for some reason it just fits the games BG, Strikers. Love it.
perhaps the game choices after the options of the poll influence some people. What would Batsugun and Sonic Wings be then? The militray kind?
I think that would've been a better description:
Battle Garegga, Strikers 1945 (more votes)
Anyway,... usefull poll.

where does Batrider and ESPRaDe fall into?
i like those, you should have added the subcategory for Sci-Fi, NEO-TOKYO Theme, like ESP.Ra.De., Senko no Ronde and Batrider
i like the mood and setting, similar to diff anime shows (akira, bubblegum crisis,, etc.)
but from the list, i voted for Mythology, only becuz, i simple ADORE Guwange

Good poll! I defintely like the WWII-ish scrolling shooter themes for my verticals and space-theme for my horizontals. But I prefer verts so I'm voting for the category that has games like Strikers 1945.

As a former Star Wars nut, sci-fi has no worries of being toppled.
But then again, I don't really avoid others based on this.

I'm a big steampunk fan myself. Progear just blows me away, as does Ibara in it's design. Would you say that Espgaluda has a medievil steampunk theme?
Ikaruga review now up in PLASMA BLOSSOM
I'm the only one who's voted for cute 'em ups? Give me some tongue-in-cheek shmupping anyday. I also like games that take unexpected turns into the absurd. Final boss of Zero Gunner 2, the pigs in Batsugun. Hell, you could even apply that to the Maoi head stages in Gradius.

I voted the "wacky" category, because I think, when it comes to setting, you can't do much better than Parodius.
I mean, you're a ship (or a penguin or a Twinbee or a samurai or a paper plane or an octopus...) fighting giant evil penguins in a block of cheese and also space (among others). It's just too perfect.
Plus, you know, hentai.

I'm surprised in the lack of interest in cute 'em ups. I'm sure if this were a Japanese board it would be on second place. Maybe I should have listed Harmful Park and Twinkle Star Sprites as example games, as Cotton and Twinbee may be considered too tame by a lot of people.
Personally I voted for Fantasy, although I also like Steampunk and Cuters. Speaking of Steampunk, I think it's a shame that genre isn't represented more. It's obviously very popular, but apart from the ones already listed I can only really think of Gunbird 1&2, Ibara and Battle Garegga as other possible examples. Any others that come to mind?

Yeah, I was thinking of dividing Sci-Fi into Space and maybe Cyberpunk or Giant Robots, but I figured there is too much overlap in these areas, so I left them all in the same category. I think it probably wouldn't have been clear enough where Cyberspace ends and Space begins.RoninBuddha wrote:where does Batrider and ESPRaDe fall into?
