Aren't the biggest hit-boxes on the bosses?

Don't you have an enormous hit box in B-Wings? It's only as big as your ship but unfortunately, your ship is teh huge. Maybe that's why every single person in the universe hates this game.
I just looked at some pictures of Bio-Ship Paladin. Dang that ship is huge.

I swear to god Zed Blade's is slightly bigger than the already enormous ship.

so far I can't remember* any boss with a bigger hitbox than the 3rd boss from R-Type :pmoozooh wrote:If taking bosses into account, Yuyuko's "fan mode" spellcards make her hitbox extend over all the upper border of the screen.
what would be the largest single attack hitbox? (from bosses, but not limited to)
also, I remember (!) some games where you're a character flying on a serpent-like dragon (have never played it, though), the dragon's tail could be counted as a hitbox :p (or the Boss Rush flash game). Or Dogyuun's mecha on stage 10 :p

Re: Re:
Nice topic necro.
There's any number of indie games with big hitboxes, some bigger than the ship itself if you're really unlucky. You Will Die, for example, before it got patched.

Stage three is the giant battleship. Yea, it's fun to blast apart. However I'd only call the core at the end of the stage the 'boss hitbox'. Stage five has the mass of blob things that's pretty big when it's fully assembled, but once again the actual core isn't that big.shadowbringer wrote: so far I can't remember* any boss with a bigger hitbox than the 3rd boss from R-Type :p

I am pretty sure that the hit box in the NES sky shark is larger than the plane itself. Ugh.

YGS2K in small hitbox mode
Re: Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
That land speeder stage in Super Empire Strikes Back.
Basically, allow anything to reach the left half of the screen and it'll hit you.

The rectangular hitboxes of Gradius III bubbles are... quite nasty.
If watching the trailer of the game
makes you feel a certain way
I would be very happy if
you would give the game a try

SNK's Bermuda Triangle has probably the largest hitbox I've ever seen.

I recall having the cockpit of the ship grind harmlessly along the ground when I went low to dodge enemy fire. And yet, it is still so easy to get a clip death from a bullet that managed to sneak past the satellites and straight to the rear engine...BulletMagnet wrote:I recall being zapped numerous times on that stupid protruding tailfin when playing Zero Wing...

Hitbox the size of the ship? Raiden / Raiden II stick out there. DX too. I don't consider this a bad thing at all though.
Isnt Mushi Futari's hitbox 1x1 in pixel size? I'm probably wrong but I remember reading that here in the forums sometime in 2009.

Re: Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
I'm fairly certain the hitboxes in Raiden II and DX are smaller than the first game. They're certainly not as big as the entire ship. It's what allows you to do stuff like dodge those sniper shots from those helicopter-like ships simply moving horizontally, even in stage five when they're almost directly on your horizontal plane at the bottom of the screen. You can also fly between the dual stream of bullets from the stage 2 boss and very carefully sit on top of the stage 3 boss, dodging its aimed shots with slight movement, in order to destroy it in a few seconds.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Re: Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
:O I didn't even know that. I was well aware of the ability to point-blank some bosses but dodging the little sniper planes that are on the bottom of the screen always forces me to move diagonally or die.MathU wrote:I'm fairly certain the hitboxes in Raiden II and DX are smaller than the first game. You wouldn't happen to know a superplay of some sort where I could see this in action would you? Youtubing and Googling gave me nothing but demonstration plays and novice runs.

Silver Surfer for the NES. Massive hitbox. Crap game as well, so 2/2.
Re: Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
You're just getting that from AVGN. Silver Surfer isn't bad, it's just a memorizer like R-Type. Graphics are surprisingly polished for the NES, but there really aren't that many good runs of the game on YT so most people wouldn't know that. There is, however, a no-miss run on Super-play.co.uk, so give that a look.Snake wrote:Silver Surfer for the NES. Massive hitbox. Crap game as well, so 2/2.
Re: Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
Not to mention one of the best NES soundtracks EVER.
As far as small hitboxes, when I played Mushihimesama Arrange Mode, I didn't even bother dodging. I just flew through bullets and some how managed to survive (without bombing).

Happened to me too. I think that happens in normal Mushi, too, though. Part of the reason why I sold the game recently. Just feels cheap.ratikal wrote: As far as small hitboxes, when I played Mushihimesama Arrange Mode, I didn't even bother dodging. Why do I need YT vids to make a comment about a game I played in 1991?Silver Surfer isn't bad, it's just a memorizer like R-Type. Graphics are surprisingly polished for the NES, but there really aren't that many good runs of the game on YT so most people wouldn't know that.

Angry Video Game Nerd is a webshow where a guy (James Rolfe) "reviews" bad games in a comedic way. He did a pretty memorable review of silver surfer. Although he isnt supposed to be taken seriously, although many people do (in reality its just a show, not a review).Snake wrote:From what?RNGmaster wrote:You're just getting that from AVGN.Snake wrote:Silver Surfer for the NES. Ok, I have seen a couple of those. Not to my taste, and I haven't seen one on Silver Surfer (which does have a large hitbox).AntiFritz wrote: Angry Video Game Nerd is a webshow where a guy (James Rolfe) "reviews" bad games in a comedic way. Now that I know you've actually played the game and weren't making an uninformed condemnation, I can respect your opinion.Snake wrote: Ok, I have seen a couple of those. Not to my taste, and I haven't seen one on Silver Surfer (which does have a large hitbox).
Re: Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
Seihou 1 and 3 have one-pixel hitboxes, I believe, even if they usually don't really come in very handy.

Biggest hitbox: Freakin' Denaris/Katakis on C64... ARRRRRGH
