RQ: How to successfully activate the HYPER on DDP:R iPhone?

Hello.

im not sure if this question belongs here or not, but here goes anyway.

i've been enjoying DDP:R on my iTouch for awhile now, and i can get to tsaibachi (not hibachi, yet) and all that, but theres one thing that is bothering me:

i dont really know how to activate the hyper at will. lemme explain:
in order for you to get sick points in the game, you need to get your hyper and rack up a shitload of stars and stuff, so your hit counter goes up, and so you can get some sick points easilly... now, what i dont really understand is how to get your hyper bar to fill up quickly, so that you can chain a couple hypers and get your hit counter go way up almost at will.

take for example stage five. After the spinning lasers section (in which i die inevitably...), theres a section in which i can get my counter up to 6000+ ... and i've seen videos of ppl getting it to 20000+ but they hyper here and there at will ... but i dont quite get that technique, since i dont really understand how to get my hyper bar to raise fast enoug...

so, again, my question is, how do i doit? ... cuz now that i have a lil grasp of how to play it right, i wanna score big... and so far, i have 7.5 billion points, and i've seen scores several times bigger than mine, but i know why is that, just that i dont know how to get my hit counter way up... so, any hints or soemthin?

First off, make sure you hyper settings are on manual. You can do this by going into the Options->Button Layout->Next-> and change hyper counter to manual.

One big factor of hyper charge speed is what ship you are using. Bomb and Strong are slower, and Power is faster. If you want huge points, use Power.

Power's Boost mode will also add to your hyper counter when absorbing bullets. Practice well enough and you can have a hyper at will at anytime.

To get to raise quicker involves you getting up close to enemies. Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMAWEgY7VmA

Notice how at the beginning, he's pretty much at the top of the screen building up his hyper. It increases faster if the aura of the laser around your ship is killing stuff. Green bees that are hidden through out the level also fill up your hyper gauge by 25%. These are generally more worth it than the measly points the orange bees give.

Also a word of advice, your hit count is more of a multiplier than anything. The point value you get from destroying ships all add up, and losing the chain means losing the point value. The multiplier is only activated when you have a full hyper gauge but DON'T use it. To sum it all up, to get big points you have to:
1. Kill stuff
2. Hyper to increase your HIT count and thus the multiplier (generally throughout the first half of the stage)
3. DO NOT DROP THE CHAIN
4. Cash in the points by destroying stuff with a full hyper gauge but not using the hyper.

That's pretty much DFK in a nut shell.

I have never played the phone version, but I understood the mechanics are still same as the real game so this should still be correct:

One bit that often seems to get overlooked, is that lasering enemies that are still off screen also charges the hyper faster. The technique of lasering stuff at the top edge combines this with the aura damage charge increase to make the gauge go up really fast. Of course this techique can easily get you killed, so you pretty much have to know when it's safe to do it. You should also use the initial hyper invincibility to your advantage and use the time to sit on top of some enemies lasering them to get some charge back right away.

As already said, the main idea for scoring big is minimizing the time you spend hypering and with a non-filled hyper gauge, while still using some hypers to get the hit count up. The multiplier you have maxes out at 10,000 hits so there's no point in hypering after that, unless you need it to keep the chain.

i've seen vids on youtube that shows a hitcount higher than 10k ... i guess thats a blacklabel version or something... isn't it?

Of course your hit count will still continue to grow by just killing stuff, but it doesn't matter in the scoring anymore so there's no point in using hypers to increase it. Scoring in Black Label is completely different, so you shouldn't use strategies you see in BL vids in the normal game.

also remember you can use the hyper laser + aura combo to milk laser cannons for massive chain increase
you can get like 10k chain in the beginning of stage 5 by doing this

You want it manual so you can hold off on it. There are some moments where its pointless to hyper and moments where it is essential. It also allows you to score big since you'll be able to hold and use the multiplier.

Yeah, i've noticed. I can get my hit count to 7k in that stage byjust milking those lasers .... its really fun doing it!

humm .. i think i get the idea now ... need to experiment some with the manual settings and see if i can get it to work for me (it takes time to get used to manual settings, y'know!)

Here is the answer after this thread has been up for a year...
In iPhone mode you have to be in M mode to charge the hyper, and it charges very fast when the M gauge is full.
You get the gauge over to M mode by grazing bullets, and there is a red halo/aura around your ship that designates how closely you have to graze. This red halo is very small in S mode when your weapons are maxed, and quite large when you get into M mode.
Enemies drop bigger stars with the S gauge filled up and also bullets that are cancelled give stars, while in M mode bullets that are cancelled don't give stars. Also, the multiplier (which maxes out at 1000 in iPhone mode) decrease steadily as soon as the gauge goes into S mode even a little bit. Killing enemies drives the gauge towards S, so you gotta make sure to be grazing bullets to keep the multiplier up and the gauge in M. So the trick for points is this: Get the gauge maxed at M and the multiplier at 1000, then activate your hyper. Make sure to spin around enough to get the level three Hyper Cannon. By the time the hyper runs out and you unleash your Cannon, your hyper gauge should be refilled because your gauge was maxed at M. So guess what? Activate your next hyper immediately afterward to keep the multiplier above 995 (its possible to press it fast enough to hold the 1000 multiplier) and watch the points roll in =)

This strategy works best on bosses and mid-bosses, as the hyper gauge fills significantly faster when battling them and their patterns can get dense which means plenty of bullet cancel stars. The only boss you have to be really careful on (for the first loop anyway) is the Stage 5 boss because she has several different patterns where she drops indestructible canisters that release bullets. If one of these hits you while you are hypering it will ruin the whole thing and it's quite frustrating. Sometimes if you try this trick during a stage there won't be enough going on as far as bullets and enemies to recharge your hyper in time.

So there you have it, this is what I've figured out. And I'm currently #6 for Type C and for Hibachi iPhone mode, and #10 for Type B iPhone mode all on Gamecenter, and thats if you count the obviously hacked scores in first and sometimes second place >=(
