I have re-uploaded the Super Darius Perfection Laserdisc in one video, instead of 9 seperate parts. I'll be doing this for all of my older video uploads in the coming weeks.

Blast form the past: Ingram Computer Game Previews 1985 Feb-

Post by Arasoi »

This was a really interesting video for me to get.

Small backstory here.. when I first saw this on ebay I didnt know what the heck it was. I investigated, turns out its a proprietary laserdisc for a kiosk sold to stores in the early to mid 80s. And apparently it had computer game ads on it.

I haggled the buyer down as far as I could, and jumped on the disc. I don't think anybody else even knew what the heck this thing was, much less was interested in its content. I received what appeared to me something very odd indeed.. a "generic" laserdisc, made by scotch. The top had a label on it, even. I've never seen that before. it covered the whole disc surface on the top.

Popping it in I was greeted by a blast of digital sound through my audio speakers through the right stereo channel. I hoped I hadnt gotten something I couldnt use. I was patient and the commercials began with the audio in the left channel, and the data in the right. It appeared the beeps were data, telling the proprietary kiosk through the right audio channel to move to another random video. Pretty interesting. To fix it for upload I duplicated the mono channel to the right stereo channel for faux stereo, no more needless noise.

A lot of people say retro computer/gaming is covered, everything is remembered thanks to the internet. I can honestly say this isnt true, especially after viewing this disk, and the old Atari tapes I have. There was an aspect of home computing and gaming that was lost culturally, and this laserdisc really does feel like a time capsule into the past. I saw ads for programs here I hadn't thought about in literally 25 years. It was pretty interesting.

For those under the age of 30 or so, this LD probably offers nothing but laughs, but for us old timers, it really takes us back. A true time capsule, material like this is what Retro Reality is all about.

Very interesting. Watched through the first ten minutes or so, and I'll have to watch the rest later. The whole thing is a bit before my time (I missed most of the C64 era, and got into PCs around 1991 or so) but there's definitely some recognizable stuff here. I can imagine that trying to create a compelling "commercial" for a text adventure game would have been a bit challenging...
