Re: Show them if you've got them - Candy cabs
Thanks all for the nice feedback! Yeah, I love my Blast to death, it's a whole new dimension of shmupping, playing those games "in their natural habitat" hehehe. Looking forward to getting my mame-machine up and running and playing all those classics on a cab in true tate!

Re: Show them if you've got them - Candy cabs
Well, I want to take the plunge into a cab. What are some basic things I should know? Such as: monitor types, 2p control panels, connection types, and anything else I missed.
Who should I get a hold of to get one in the western US?

As far as dealers, you have Matsu in Southern California [email protected]
Or Ken (I believe he is in Utah) [email protected]
Otherwise you can wait for a private seller

Awesome, I talked to Matsu and I'm going to check out a Blast City and Astro City in a week. Not really sure which one I should get...anyone have any opinions on either?

Re: Show them if you've got them - Candy cabs
The Astro will be cheaper, but will not play high res games.
The Blast is obviously going to be more expensive, but is also Tri Sync and will play high res games.
Really depends on what you want to do, and what kind of games you want to play.

Re: Show them if you've got them - Candy cabs
If you get an Astro City candy cab, there's an alternative solution get 31kHz high-res games to work on a 15kHz low-res cab setup. You'd need access to an Ultracade UVC device that can convert 640 x 480 signal into a workable 480i format viewable on a 320 x 240 low-res arcade RGB monitor setup.
However, if you get a candy cab with a tri-sync monitor chassis setup, it won't be as sharp displaying those dedicated 15kHz arcade PCBs like with a dedicated candy cab using a 15kHz or dual sync monitor setup (i.e. Nanao MS9 is capable of playing either 15kHz or the medium-res 24kHz based PCBs).
So it's a toss up as to whether you want such a dedicated low-res arcade monitor setup to display low-res PCB at it's best or to go with a tri-sync one and have greater versatility with all three PCB formats: 15kHz, 24kHz & 31kHz from the get-go.
If you plan on tate'ing or yoko'ing your monitor a lot, then consider getting an Taito Egret 29 or a Taito Egret II candy cab for their extreme ease of tate'ing the monitor with just one hand.

Does anyone have a picture contrasting a 15kHz display on both a tri-sync and a dual-sync?

Different models vary widely but with a tri-sync you're usually looking at an overly sharp picture with heavy scanlines and less depth of colour. Blasts have some of the more 15KHz friendly tri-syncs though.

Re: Show them if you've got them - Candy cabs
Blast and Windy2 cabs (with toshiba chassis) have the best 15khz picture for a tri-sync. Wei-ya, Kortek, (korea/china made etc.) all have noticeable geometry problems at 15khz, as they are optimized for 31khz,

Just got my shipping quote from Matsu and I'm probably going to go with the Astro. I probably shouldn't worry about getting a Naomi set up or a Type X just yet.

Just pick up an Ultracade UVC if going the Sammy Atomiswave/Taito Type X/Sega Naomi route in the future with an Astro candy cab setup. Running DC games such as Gigawing 2 looks great on a dual-sync Nanao MS9 monitor setup with an UVC device even though it's running at 480i.

All this tri-sync talk reminds me I've never tried the other two modes on my NANAO monitor

Every time I see a Blast, VS., or Astro it makes me want to buy another cab.
My pair of Aeros look so nice though....but they are ridiculously heavy.
Nice collection there though....the Net City is like an exclamation point at the end of the sentence:)
Good for you!

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the twins.

Next is some cleaning up, ordering some marquees & instruction strips...Talk about jumping in with two feet! I've been waiting a long time to get some candy cabs and I just said to myself, go for it. It's your passion. Make it happen.

Wow, congrats Frenetic those are awesome looking!
One question, what's with the 5 button layout on the Tated one? Was that originally for some fighter, or did you want it that way for a certain reason?
