Mad Shark

Post by spadgy »

Welcome to the Mad Shark Hi-Score Table

Image

The classic 1993 Allumer shmup. A lot of fun, so get playing, and submit your score today!

LAST UPDATE: December 14th, 2014

Submit like this please:
NAME - SCORE - LEVEL - MAME/PCB - AUTOFIRE? Y/N

For example:
Meatloaf - 666,666 - 1-2-3 - PCB - NO

Top Tips for Mad Shark
• Always pick up the same weapon type each time. Eventually the score bonus gets pretty damn high (Starts at 10,000. Definitely reaches 50,000. Perhaps more).
• If you see a little green/brown car parked horizontally, get to the bottom of the screen and get on the side of the screen it is facing. Suddenly it will drive off. Shoot it for 50k.
• Blue laser is your friend from level 3 onwards.
• There's a long bomb delay

Here's the Mad Shark discussion thread.

TrevHead - 912,760 - 1-3-3 - ShmupMame 2.2

In stage 3 theres supposed to be 2 cars so far ive only been able to find one, at that horizontal streach of road just before the mid boss tank, wheres the other one?

Can we use autofire? Ive noticed that shmupmame 2.2s autofire is fast even on its slowest setting, shame xpadders wont work.

That stage 3 boss is a bit of a bitch unless your fully powered up with the laser and drop a bomb or 2. Allways do suck at fighting bosses that move around the screen randomly, the stage 2 boss in Cyvern is a bitch aswell.

How about I add an 'Autofire Y/N' column?

Actually - even without thinking, I used the custom autofire circuit on my Jamma arcade stick (set at the level I can button bash rather than some insane fast speed).

So - Trev and TomaS - did you use Autofire?

I'll add the extra column in now.

One time there were 3 cars at that road, but I only remember losing a life little before that part. Don't know if that has anything to do with the cars, or is it just something else which triggers them. The max same weapon bonus is 50,000 points, I didn't see it going further.

Ok, the sixth boss was just as hard as I remembered.. got to practice.

TomuS - 3,044,690 - 1-6-4 - MAME - YES

Edit: Stage 7, woohoo!

TomuS - 3,422,980 - 1-7-2 - MAME - YES

Ive managed to get to stage 4 finally, due to the slow speed of your plane Im finding it very hard dodging bullet heavy patterns especially the boss fights due to even the bullet patterns been aimed at you which makes the patterns tricky to memorise for safespots. All in all im not used to these types of shmups, still its all fun learning new shmupping techniques :)

TrevHead - 1,279,320 - 1-4-4 - ShmupMame2.2 - YES
Although for my other scores I havnt used autofire, this game when played on a pad is a recipe for carpal tunnel syndrome and knackerd fire buttons so I swapped to autofire even if shmupmame 2.2 autofire is a bit on the fast side.

As for those cars my guess is that its totally random as to the number you get. Latley none have been showing up which is a bit annoying as theyre worth so much. Ive noticed a car show up on stage 1 aswell. at the part where 2 of those large black planes show up.

Also the item carriers will rarely drop 4 items instead of just the 1, im guessing thats random aswell

EDIT: sorry to be asking so many questions but what do all the digits for the stage mean? ild guess that the 1st digit is loops with the 2nd the stage number, dont have a clue what the 3 digit means.

Correct, 1st digit for the loop, 2nd for the stage & 3rd for what part of the stage you reached. I think the stages have 4 parts, so I guess you got pretty far in the fourth stage in your run.

TomuS - 6,479,830 - 2-3-5 - MAME - YES

The last part of the third stage at second loop is pretty hard.. The boss is manageable, but I somehow screw up every time. And then comes the friendly restart point which so far has killed every single extra life I had. I'll keep trying!

Edit: TomuS - 6,826,510 - 2-3-5 - MAME - YES

I'm getting so pissed right now, why can't I clear that stage already. Messed up everything again, still somehow survived there.

At least this time I achieved something among the messing up. No-missed up to that stage and finally broke 7 million.
I would have certainly cleared that stage IF I didn't accidentally change my weapon just before the boss. Argh. It won't be 2-3-5 the next time I post here.

TomuS - 7,953,310 - 2-5-4 - MAME - YES

Damnit, 8mil was sooo close! I have to say the fourth boss on second loop is ridiculous, I need at least 3 bombs and good luck or otherwise it's game over. By the stage I reached here the points could actually be ~9mil, but it's always the mess-everywhere-games when I manage to get far. Got to keep trying.

Edit: TomuS - 8,885,380 - 2-6-1 - MAME - YES

YES!! Now we're talking. Biggest mistake was in 2-5 end/boss where I lost too many lives trying to survive without powerups from the last checkpoint. Only on my last life I got the strategy down and arrived at 2-6 pretty much unarmed. Haha.

Good to have you here :::Redsun:::. It's always good to have another scorer for an obscure game like this. Oh - and did you use autofire or not?

And TomuS - amazing work! I can smell the 2-ALL!

Just got to 2-6-4, and a sniper took my last life little before the boss. Too bad the score wasn't good. Don't know about that 2-ALL, haha, as far as I know nobody has cleared the second loop. I think the WR is 2-7-3 and ~10,8mil. I've save-stated the second loop and there isn't actually anything impossible, but many really, really hard parts requiring good luck too. For example it's irritating that the bomb has 2 random ways of exploding. One's the normal and the other is when the explosion animation jumps a little and it lasts longer. Now, the fourth boss on second loop doesn't know mercy in timing and if I happen to drop the "wrong" bomb it can be game over easily. Argh. That 9mil will be broken no matter what, it's just too close.

it's based on mame a bit but it's not a mame build

it's meant to be faster than mame without being crazy inaccurate as that would imply

also netplay out of the box, that means something

Cheers Despatche. I'll add a note in the scoreboard. Seems a bit too much to add a whole new board for a MAME variant considering the relatively low number of scores here; I can always split it later if suddenly there a rush on the Shark!
