I'd be buying it regardless, but this release sounds great!

I wonder if they changed the slowdown in MBL to better reflect the PCB? That really would make this the best version as the slowdown is way-off on the JPN and US versions..

In all seriousness, I'm still holding out for a dialogue patch to the NA version. Above the slowdown (which no one outside this general community would notice), the stupid dialogue is the biggest obstacle to friends taking the game seriously when I show it to them. I'm glad RSG had more sense than Aksys did in this regard.

Is it just cringe-worthy voice acting?

I have only seen little bits of the translation in vids/stills. It's not cringe-worthy voice acting. It's vomit-inducing, non-sensical, stupid dialogue....DrTrouserPlank wrote:What's wrong with the dialogue in the US version?StarCreator wrote:In all seriousness, I'm still holding out for a dialogue patch to the NA version. Christ that is bad, I had forgotten just how bad it really was. I can see the kind of ppl Aksys were aiming their game at, that is the 13 YO weeaboos who get a woody for all the loli and desu, nano and that sort of horseshit
Not that dialog really matters to most of us here but as someone just pointed out its something you wouldnt want to show your mates uncase they mistake your rabid shmup fandom as something totally different.
Imagine the scene:
YOU "Look fellas youve really gotta check out this game, Its fantastic!"
FRIENDS "Not another one of these out of date games you keep on harping on about is it?"
YOU "Yea but really this game is the bees knees! Ive already spent over 100 hours playing it"
FRIENDS "OK then, but I really dont understand why you like them so much"
you start the game up
FRIENDS "Now I know........."

I quite like the borderline xenophobic accents and spelling in those screens
One might wonder if the game being released in France or Germany hasn't made them redo those sequences as they'd probably get complaints about them.

Not that I already planned to use Casper as motif/theme for my Custom Arcadestick... but now? Ei dare yu to kut ani Deutsche linez from Däthsmailes, Raizing Starr Gaymez - ja!?
btw is the Dialog actually spoken or just plain text? If spoken, I hope there is a English / Japanese Dub Option... I hope Cave really considers releasing more games RF/PAL Region. <3

All dialogue is text only... unless you preordered the JP version. The first pressing came with full voices as a DLC code. The full voice option isn't available any other way in JP, and not available at all in NA.

wow thats really tasty DLC, thinking that and the upcoming MMP /Sweets pack it seems that cave really do what buttons to press to make fans preorder their games. Most other games preorder freebies pale in comparison

Right - I finally have a de-bug machine at home and a copy of the PAL version of Deathsmiles.
I have it for 48 hours, which means you have 48 hours to ask me things!

Re: Deathsmiles PAL release (DATED: Feb 18th)
Here's a few -
Does it have MBL ver 1.1 on the disc.
Have you noticed any extra picture settings, e.g. smoothing on/off
How is the slowdown generally in MBL Arcade - in particular the Ice Palace. From what I remember the Japanese release was pretty fast - 360 mode was a bit better though.
Have a good 48 hours.

I trust your judgement and since you havnt mentioned anything that bugs you with the game ill take that as a indication that its a good port.spadgy wrote:Right - I finally have a de-bug machine at home and a copy of the PAL version of Deathsmiles.

I suppose the only points in curious atm are: How much of an improvement is the new dialog (im right in guessing that its text only and no voice acting right?)
The slowdown has been reworked to resemble the original, how close to the original slowdown is it? is it close enough for any offline leaderboards of the EU and J versions to be grouped together? Or will all versions need their own seperate highscore boards (including a possible 2 for the NA version due to patching)
Im sure every man and his dog will be playing PAL/ EU DS but it would be nice to beable to compare our scores to the Japanese masters.

Re: Deathsmiles PAL release (DATED: Feb 18th)
I'll comment on slowdowns when I've played a bit more, but here's the good news:
• MBL 1.1 is on disk! (Along with vanilla arcade, vanilla Xbox 360 mode, MBL, and vanilla 1.1)
• There is a smoothing option in the options menu. No other fancy picture settings (beyond size/position etc.)

Is it 16:9 forced aspect like Guwange (I dont like having black bars on my old TV)?
And same as previous question, how is the dialog?

Re: Deathsmiles PAL release (DATED: Feb 18th)
I've tried it on a 4:3, and it fits fine. That is to say, the image playing area is a 4:3 size. The default gameplay screen size is smaller than the TV image (there's a wallpaper background that serves as a border), but it's very easy to make the image bigger to fill the screen and it looks fine.BPzeBanshee wrote: Two stupid questions from me:

It's weird seeing the English dialogue, and to be honest so far I've just speed through hitting the button and not reading it simple because of force of habit. I'll actually pay it some attention next time!
There was a 'Game of the Week' slot going for the issue of the paper I'm writing about this in for the issue out Feb 13th. to get that they had to loan me a de-bug machine for the weekend (kind thanks to RSG and their PRs!), or go in the issue out the 20th and get a smaller space (crowded week).Skykid wrote: Can't believe you got this so quick, mine's not being posted til monday.
I'm glad you're getting a copy. I gave them some names of shmup-savvy games journalists they would be daft to miss out on, and made sure you and Rupert H were on that list (of course I'm sure you would have sorted it without me! I know you don't need that!).

Yeah. £17-20 seems to be the standard. Now, if all shooters were region free and this price point, I wouldn't have a problem buying several every month if the devs/pubs could/would pump them out.

Thanks for the info Spadgy - I've never played MBL ver 1.1 so that's worth the price of the disc alone for me. Can't wait to try out the Ice Palace in this mode.
