There's also Dogs of War, which is mentioned in Xenocide Files (Atari ST), but I don't know if it's good or not.
Yeah I'd say it hasn't aged as well as other games. Some of the sprite work isn't as impressive anymore. However for it's time, it really blew me away.

The sound effects and crazy rock/metal music still hold up imho and the little elements elements of where enemies are posing as "innocent bystanders", but last minute pulling out a gun .... The number of onscreen explosions and bullets is nuts as well, regardless of game genre.

Dogs of War is an Ikari clone where you can purchase weapon upgrades. It was alright, but I thought the actual Ikari Warriors port on Amiga was much better.

I'm not aware of that... mostly because I have modded console... But technically it's PAL, as is my copy of the game

greg wrote: Has anyone else played Commando on the Atari 7800? That version had a knife powerup that you could get, which allowed you to kill enemies just by touching them (instead of vice versa). That was real fun. I think there was also a powerup that gave you rapid fire for a limited time too. There were spots in the stone overpasses you can blow up to reveal passages to underground dungeons. IIRC, there were bugs you had to kill in there and free the hostages that were strapped to the walls. I can't remember the arcade or the NES versions having these. The game really showed the great graphics capabilities of the 7800.
Yeah, I remember the 7800 Commando having a lot of great additions that were specific to that version. It might really be the best home port. The 7800 is still a system I need to get, but I'm dissuaded by reports on how terrible the controller is (I'm in the US too, so they won't come with the pad style controller).

I had a 7800 poster up on my wall in junior high with screenshots of so many of the games, and it had pictures of the European pad-style controller. It was never released in the States, but couldn't they just be imported?

Nobody's mentioned Ninja Emaki yet, so allow me. Game is a good time. Shifts between autoscrolling shooter levels and run n gun.

It looks like my favorites have been covered, but two decent games that haven't been mentioned are Alien Syndrome and Search and Rescue.

By the way, I know the Data East collection for Wii lets you use the right analog stick for aiming in Heavy Barrel. Are there any other re-releases out there that do something similar for rotary stick games? I seem to remember a version of Ikari Warriors with it, but I can't find any info now.

Reportedly Alien Syndrome remake for the PS2. Besides, this is the very hook of Apocalypse starring Bruce Willis and it works like a charm in that game. Hunter: The Reckoning console games also have such controls.
Isn't Guwange for the 360 effectively a twin stick shooter?

Speaking of rotary games....

Does anyone know of a custom joystick builder that has built a rotary joystick or would possibly be interested in making one on commission? I'd love one for mame or something. Maybe using an SNK LS-30 from that one german site and some of those rotary interfaces from Ultimarc....

I too would like some type of rotary stick, though I don't want it custom-built. Exterminator is a bitch to play without it.

Yeah, I bought the 7800 version of Commando brand new back in 1990 when Toys-R-Us was still selling 7800 games. It's a bit different compared to the orignal arcade PCB version of the same name but a fun game nevertheless.

I even bought the 7800 version of Ikari Warriors & it, too, is an interesting console version.

It seems that Forgotten Worlds on the first Capcom Classics Collection has dual-stick aiming. That's probably what I was thinking of earlier.

Wow, I'd forgotten all about Ikari Warriors coming out on the 7800. I never got around to buying that one.

EDIT: I found this video on Youtube of Ikari Warriors 7800. It doesn't look as great as Commando, that's for sure.
