I wasn't recording it this time unfortunately, but I will when I go for it again. I will probably give it a try on the harder difficulties before I settle for uploading a run on normal.

By the way, do you know how to make the strawberry appear on stage 2 with certainty on normal mode? On very hard difficulty it will appear 100% of the time, while on normal it shows up only very rarely.

I suggest you go for the PC Engine SuperGrafx version since it allows you to adjust difficulty for the game. The screenshot below shows it:

And here's how it goes:
Set button II to turbo mode, then turn on the game. When the warning screen appears, hold button II until an options screen appears.

You can choose a difficulty level of your choice from 1(easy) to 7(hardest), while maintaining defaults.

Try to find a suitable emulator like Magic Engine for example, if you plan on making one.

Ignore the above post:

1. The SuperGrafx version is simply easier.
2. You can change the difficulty of the arcade version (and older versions of MAME probably have the default difficulty wrong). You're better off finding a port of the actual arcade game, not a conversion.

I beat it on very hard difficulty and very fast bullets on the DIPs. I'm processing the video of it right now. Please be patient :) .

And then I will get to beating SM's 12 million.

Oh, I do have a Capcom Classics Collection Remixed for the PSP and it has this game, but literally useless when the MAME version is around.

Right now it's all about not getting hit anymore to pick up the POWs and yashichis, and figuring out how to get that strawberry on stage 2. The strawberry alone is worth 240k I believe, so I'm not that far off :) .

I noticed that the newer world and USA builds (which AFAIK, were only recently dumped) have a different level order. Stage 2 is the first stage in the newer build. If I remember correctly, the first stage in earlier versions was moved to stage 3.

Bump. No score yet, sorry!

Supposedly 2P is slightly stronger than 1P, but I've never seen the difference.

The new version is some kind of Black Label. It's much easier in addition to the stages being moved around. At least it's clearly marked... those boards are the ones with actual program dates.

Couldn't sleep, so I decided to play this game just for fun but somehow got the clear. It seems this isn't being maintained, but I might as well post anyway. This game is awesome and more people should play it.

Any advice for playing this game for score? I'm guessing it's mostly "kill the stuff + get the secret bonus items", but...

Getting a high destruction rate in the early stages is important. I haven't figured out the exact numbers for all of this yet, but depending on your destruction rate, you get an upgrade to your medal.

The rank of the medal you end up having will give you a hidden multiplier that affects all hidden bonus items and some bosses too. So picking up a 100,000pt hidden item in Stage 2 will actually have a 1.75x multiplier if you get 100% in stage 1. This multiplier maxes out at 3x and I usually get that by the end of stage 4. Hugely important you have it at least maxed by the end of stage 5, since the final boss kill value is 1,000,000 (x multiplier).

So not taking damage is also very important if there are POW-items or Yashichi items left in the stage. Since they give you life back, or a huge point bonus if you're already at full health.


One thing I noticed about rank is that it goes up with time, and taking damage lowers it by 1. But if you do the screen bombing ability which costs 1 health, it doesn't lower your rank. This is important early on since you want your rank to be pretty high (at 0A) on this frame (middle of stage 2).

If you manage to do that, there will be a hidden strawberry in the lower-left corner where the turrets are slightly up from where the screenshot was taken.


There's more stuff, but like you said, killing most stuff and getting all the bonuses is where you should start. It's worth a lot.
