Live Streamed Tetris Tournament January 7th!

Post by undamned »

Not sure how awesome or not this will be, but being as it's hosted by Hard Drop, and they have some amazing players, I'm thinking it will be worth watching: http://www.tetris.com/stream.html

I laughed a little when I read about there being live commentary. "And he goes for the 'T' spin!" :D

Awesome... I've always been intrigued by legit Tetris playing, and I bet this will be cool to watch.

I saw a guy rape a cab once at Game Inn Ebisen. Sick.
Might watch this if I've got the time.

This is being done with Tetris Friends, I believe; a lot of the previous matches were done on it, anyway. This should be good.

If you stop by the live stream even before the tournament, you might catch some of these previous matches.

With a hole saw? I think that would top a streamed tourney any day...
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Well, that kills my interest.

Tetris The Absolute The Grand Master 2 PLUS has taken on a whole new level of addiction for me since I got the EX-SE.

You just have to accept it. We will never, ever play Shirase Mode in our lifetimes D:

I more object because of The Tetris Company's meddling. They're the worst thing to ever happen to Tetris.

As someone who loves Tetris and actually just started playing it recently (PS3 Tetris came out a couple of days ago), I'm eager to watch this.

If your tetris skills are anything like your level of play on shmups, I'd be interested in watching some of your tetris play :D
Thanks for the heads up on PSN Tetris! I just picked up TGM Ace for the 360, so I'm wondering if the value will be nullified by PSN Tetris...

Oh great. Had to leave during the evening and only saw the last minute of the stream :( I hope someone uploads the match to youtube.

Well not really, I'm an average player at Tetris. Played a few matches against spongdangly and he proceeded to kick my ass repeatedly even with a 10-line handicap. I plan to practice more and get better though.

uhhhh is it already over? What was that, like 30 minutes? I missed the whole thing and it's only 9:30 PM.

Very impressive, and very close.

Apparently it was a 256 person double elimination tournament, but the webcast was just for the finals. #1 US player vs. #1 Japanese player (not sure how official that is, but whatever). The American won the first match 15-13, but since he was from the losers' bracket, they played another tiebreaker match. Japanese guy won 15-13. At no point was either player ahead by more than 2.

I wasn't really watching the tiebreaker matches though. Even at amazingly high level play, Tetris isn't the greatest spectator sport. ;) But it was cool to see people at that level play live.

There were roughly 400-420 viewers, in case anybody cares.

Yeah, since it was just the final match of the tournament, I think it only lasted about an hour or so. It really would have been about 30 minutes had the American lost the first match.

I cleared Tetris the Absolute Grand Master 2 on Normal the first time I started it up. Does that mean anything? I'm sure real Tetris people can do it no problem.

I died during the credits btw, I didn't get to the 'true end' but it told me I passed so... OK.

I watched the stream when it aired. A fun watch (commentators took a while to find their footing), but the fps was horrid. When watching something as fast as competitive tetris you need a bit better fps than 4 or whatever they had running.

I was top 100 worldwide on cell phone Tetris a couple years ago. I doubt I can do as well on a keyboard though. :?

I'm pretty sure the game is just going that fast.

Yeah the footage wasn't good at all. Just watch blink sprint replays on tetris friends leaderboards, or even youtube, it's pretty thrilling. I like TGM too but we have more or less to accept it's dead, especially with mihara latest shenanigans.

Edit: here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQZSS3m-C-s
Of course in versus he plays a bit slower but this is closer to what the game actually looks like, not the streamed footage.
