Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
Here is the compile of mame I made for anyone who wants it and doesnt know how to compile it themselves.
This is 140u2 with the new PGM driver and the refresh rate is fixed to 59.17. This also has the nag screens removed and the hiscore patch applied.
Here is the X64 version:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AGHMXV00
Here is the 32bit version:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=44URT23X
Enjoy, this is the MAME.exe only.

Can't wait can't wait can't wait thanks a whole lot for this! Here is the 32bit version:

I think I've downloaded MAME about four times because of this thread alone.

Am I the only one who doesn't enjoy the score mechanism, who finds the art and levels pretty dull and soulless? Which is a bit annoying because I find the bosses and the music really cool. It feels like greyish airports, greyish towns, and greyish factories are the only things you can find in ketsui, (woopsie daisy, forgot the, orange sand port? With boats floating on sand? Waht?) light years away from a DDP or DDP DOJ, and I'm not even talking about ESP2 or Mushi. Feels like "something" is missing, and to me that's fun.
This is the first time I don't even want to 1CC a cave Shmup.

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
While I havnt played Ketsui yet (im waiting until mame u3 or shmupmame support) I would imagine its scoring system to be right up my street, as I love point blacking for score in black package and other doujins that use the mechanic.
Itll be so nice to play a Cave shmup that doesnt have strict chaining

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
I'm not really fan of strict chaining either, that's why I never bothered with DOJ at a point. I'm more about Mushi/ESP2 blacklabel bullet cancelling madness. I'm really disappointed that I don't enjoy ketsui much, cause I really had fun with the DS version.
Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
I do find that kinda strange especially since you liked the DS version. You should probably hold out until u3 is released so you can play it at the normal speed and with fixed sound. I had an open mind when I first tried it for a while yesterday, it's hard to play for score but once you learn how to approach some of the game and see it fall into place it's quite mesmerizing to see it play out.cul wrote:I'm not really fan of strict chaining either, that's why I never bothered with DOJ at a point. So... did you enjoy the "Extra" mode (which is just Ketsui Stage 5 remixed)??cul wrote:I'm really disappointed that I don't enjoy ketsui much, cause I really had fun with the DS version.

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
The binary at the top of this page is the fixed version at the correct speed, though I'd not hold out for a sound fix by u3. Haze isn't much for sound systems and there's not really many other people in the team that are likely to pick it up. It was ported a long time ago by a now non active dev from ElSemi's code and he's no longer active either. You should probably hold out until u3 is released so you can play it at the normal speed and with fixed sound.

Just in case you haven't done it yet, disable bilinear filtering and enable the scanlines (I use Real_Scanlines).cul wrote:Am I the only one who doesn't enjoy the score mechanism, who finds the art and levels pretty dull and soulless?
Dunno about the score system (except for the pointblanking-based multiplier which is fine with me) as I purposefully don't look up any strategy guides (don't want to find out anything that would spoil my fun), but to me the art looks like DOJ with mold green instead of honey yellow. I guess the game is supposed to look dead, which kind of works, but only just kind of. So you think you don't need pixel art to make Garegga-dirty graphics? Nope, not this time around. Similar thing happened to Task Force Harrier crisp backgrounds when they got downgraded for the MD/Genesis version: the concept remained the same, but the visual punch was gone.
In Ketsui's defense, its graphics do their job and don't hinder the gameplay, whereas the arcade Task Force Harrier was a bit style over substance (UPL bit more than they could swallow with that game; I guess the hardware wasn't ready yet for what they had in mind).
I enjoy Ketsui because shooting (or should I say "messing around with weapons") is actually fun here. Cave made three games with Fun Weapons™ I'm aware of and Ketsui is one of them. It is a bit on the "underwater" side, but the slowdown isn't overdone. This game clicked with me easily.

Guys, we're murdering Ketsui. Maybe it was never meant to be emulated, maybe it should have been a myth
Whatever, I enjoy it. I like the instanced chaining - of pointblanking one enemy then lock-shotting the rest to score 5-chips.

In all fairness, console games in this day and age tend to have low framerates and laggy controls too.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:Stange isnt it that since M$ brought the Xbox out the latest versions of windows have sucked for gaming![]()

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
Use the frame advance feature (shift+p) in order to find out the input lag of MAME itself, it'll be a better comparision. The OS, video card, USB controller etc. all introduce their own input lag.dmauro wrote:I just did a side-by-side against the 360 port. There is definitely some lag on the MAME version. If I hit shot on the ship select at the same time on both cabs, the 360 goes first. If I hit bomb on both at the same time, I can hear the bomb on the 360 port exploding first. It sounds like more than one frame. I did the test because Ketsui felt especially sluggish. DDP doesn't feel quite as bad, but I'll have to do a side-by-side with the PS2 port next.
Noted, I will see if it's repeatable. Also, a problem with all three of the new games is that they don't respond to the coin switch when putting a coin through, it seems to be too fast for the the game to pick up. I can only enter coins by manually triggering the coin switch. o_0

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
all these posts make me smile.
I only played the game for the first time 4 years ago.
now everyone gets a swing at it.
The thing is, I would've bought the somofabitch had they released region free (no way I'm importing a self-destructing machine).
Now to figure out how to get it running on my computer.

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
I strongly disagree with this. The only bad thing about emulating Ketsui now is messing up Ketsui port sales in japan. For everywhere else, this is huge advertisement for Cave. There are way too few buyers in the whole west for emulation to hurt Cave here. Proof is, they chose to keep their ports region locked. Emulation increases popularity of the genre and of Cave games. Think of all those thousands of gamers who would never had heard of Cave and become shmup enthusiast if they couldn't have discovered Dodonpachi in MAME (I'm definitely included in that group). Now they can play newer, more beautiful games with improved gameplay !Lance Boyle wrote:Guys, we're murdering Ketsui. Maybe it was never meant to be emulated, maybe it should have been a myth
Not getting any lag here (1 frame of lag, which as far as I've been told seems to be how much lag you get on PCBs). We already have a near perfect version, superior to most ports. With some more improvements, I think no console port will rival with MAME, like with many other games.dmauro wrote:I just did a side-by-side against the 360 port. I think that the PGM graphic corruption that happens when you score well in either ESPGALUDA or Ketsui is "missing". I wasn't paying much attention while playtesting though because I'm still kinda in shock that this is in MAME.Observer wrote:By the way, aside from the input lag or the speed, did anyone find any graphical glitches or weird stuff? The "sand" is actually water reflecting the tangerine dusk sky. It's like a beautiful painting. Some people just stand to close to a painting though, and stare themselves blind. Pro tip: Do a recording of yourself credit feeding through all stages, then look at that and you might be able to concentrate enough to really appreciate the awesome designs a bit more. But of course HARDCORE MILITARY isn't beautiful to everyone. Fairytale bugs and laser ships in space is perhaps more up your alley?cul wrote:It feels like greyish airports, greyish towns, and greyish factories are the only things you can find in ketsui, (woopsie daisy, forgot the, orange sand port? Oh my god. This game lived up to the hype for me. So psyched to be playing it right now.
I gotta admit though, for a future J360 owner, I'm a little peeved. I guess I still have DFK to look forward to.

Not sure what this looks like, but when you're collecting buttloads of 5 chips (all the time, in my case

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
My question is: can we start submitting scores? Both standard and Back Label?
Or do we first have to wait for the fixed framerate?
Oh and also, since I'm about to recompile the entire MAMEUI for my own perousal, it's better just a framerate fixed version or should I patch in austere's sound edits?
EDIT: thanks retro, looks like it's better to just implement the framerate change

Re: Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?
I can report the sound is VASTLY improved in this version and I'd say they are on track to perfecting it. As the website states, just some envelope/volume issues.Nate123 wrote:Hey guys the sound has ben fixed by the raiden ii guys here is a compiled version http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P6PSGM6S
The input lag is HORRIBLE though. I didn't test exactly what it was but it was like wading through mud. Somehow managed to get my best score ever though.. I think the framerate is correct too. Seemed a tad slower than the 360 port which I am told is a bit faster than the PCB.
The Asick72 seems to work great also.
These will be flawless inside a week. Anyone got an Espgaluda board to loan?

We didn't release a binary yet because we felt it is premature given many more changes are likely to come. We don't want people stuck with an inferior version, or to send in reports about things already fixed, it's a standard procedure as far as I know (and again I hope people don't bug MAMEdev about this unofficial release). Anyway, nimitz will soon post an updated shmupsmame with all of the latest modifications. Even then there's a lot of work to do, the audio, while it works a lot better (far from perfect though, listen closely) for Ketsui/DOJ, breaks other MAME games. More careful investigation will be required before some of our changes are included into MAME proper but we passed our patch to MAMEdev so they'll probably be working on it as well.
For those who are willing to wait for the perfection that these games deserve, I've recorded a video demonstrating the improved audio: Ketsui: The stuperplay.
I apologise for my shitty play but I'm sleep deprived, have a laggy monitor, using a random keyboard, waaa waaa mummy and other pathetic excuses.
