haha. my main game is halo 3. I play that fairly seriously; Rancid3000 and I run mlg and doubles as much as we can. I get pretty frustrated with that at times, anyone who has played halo knows what I mean.

I haven't been playing shmups very long to be honest. Decimation X is what got me hooked. I have recently downloaded MAME and have been fooling around with that; haven't gotten hooked on a shmup there yet tho. I also play Ikaruga; hopefully the next shmup that I "master". Ikaruga is really really frustrating for me. That game is hard. I can typically pick up a game and get really good at it really fast, but Ikaruga with no continues and no practice mode makes this considerably difficult.

I think I will get both Bioshocks this summer; I know they are good.

Actually I came into this thread to see if there was any progress with online leaderboard support, not to read about how some kid still bothers playing Halo 3.

This thread isn't about Halo 3 or things you do in your free time.

I didn't think I would have to spell it out, but well there you go.

JLV 2k5, 7.76 million! Level 85! Wow... you are doing amazing. Once your strategy guide is public and the online scoreboars, we'll probably see an increase in competition. The videos help a lot as well, to show how seemingly impossible things can be achieved. Thanks for your continued support. It is much appreciated.

P.S. While Halo 3 is off topic, I don't necessarily think discussions of other shmups are off topic, especially if they relate at all to Decimation X, in terms of gameplay, game style, etc. I rather enjoy listening to such things, perhaps only as the developer, to learn what people like. It may change my focus for future projects, including Decimation II, which is going to come out eventually, since Decimation X doesn't have many of the things I envisioned it should have.

This game is amazing. I had been meaning to try it for a while, and finally got around to it yesterday. I really should have tried it sooner. Great work on this game, Xona guys.

If I had to make a suggestion, make sure your games have flashier "box art" in the future. I know I personally judge games (especially the indie ones, where this is even more of a glut of crap) just on the quality of the game icon in the dashboard. I know others do to. Make sure you put a lot of effort into that artwork in the future, it will set your game apart from the rest and make it the game people try out first.

Is there any discussion here on how scoring works in multiplayer? I only played this with a single friend briefly yesterday, but it seemed like I was scoring more, faster and easier, than I did playing by myself.

Vectorman, thanks for your feedback! I am glad you're enjoying the game.

I agree 100% absolutely that the boxart and even the game icon matters considerably, and I know that the current artwork, being just a screenshot capture of the game, just doesn't do it. We've heard numerously that people would have passed by the game but only checked it out since they noticed it was from Xona Games, which makes me wonder how many people haven't played the game since they assumed it was a crappy clone of S.I. Our conversion rate (purchases to trials) is insane, and it shows that a good portion of the population who tries the game buys it, which is great, but it may also suggest that there's a ton of other people out there who should be trying it, and a lower, but no 0, percentage of them would buy it.

So thank you very much for your suggestion.

Multiplayer Scoring:

(This should be added to the strategy guide... ;) )

All enemies and bonuses score the same amount, but they are split among the players according to contribution. If you contribute 50% of the hit points to kill an enemy, you'll get 50% of the enemy's score when it dies. If you kill 75% of the wave of enemies (counted by hitpoints delivered, not number of kills), then you'll get 75% of the wave end and time bonuses for that wave.

The only thing that breaks this mold is when you attempt to pick up an icon that you are maxed out on, you get a certain number of points every frame, and multiple people can extract these points at the same time (i.e. they are not split), since you are each getting an identical bonus for attempting to get an icon you need no more of. By the way, these points are so small, they aren't worth your time, but I figured you should get something for trying to get that last A before you realize you didn't need it.

Note that because waves can be killed faster, you get more points for the time bonus. Twice as fast a kill means 4 times the points. This shared between 2 people means 2x as many points as you would have scored normally. This means you may just get your highest score playing multiplayer. However, when the game gets chaotic in the upper levels, I find that multiple players are quite distracting.

I resolved the problem via PM after the feedback thread was closed, then the thread history was carried over. I didn't weasel my way out of anything.

But hey, thanks for trying to keep on topic.

It is like the first one, it's a proper sequel to Decimation X1. We nearly ran into problems on the XNA Creators Club (now App Hub?) forums for the game being too similar to the first, and not deserving of a sequel. I found it wasn't the true fans of the game that were saying this, and also developers who were buned in the past by dishonest developers trying to pass sequels to fart apps and whatnot that were undeserving of another release.

Here's a screenshot comparison (apologies for the sizes):

We're anticipating it will be out midday Decemeber 7th (tomorrow)...

Also, here's a list of improvements from Decimation X to Decimation X3:

- two game modes (normal and challenge; each different gameplay from X1)
- bosses (now animated)
- new enemies
- new levels (formations)
- new shields (brighter = stronger now)
- new music (complete remix of Decimation X Theme)
- more intense gameplay
- more powerups (amount)
- more powerups (type)
- more firepower
- new GUI
- new HUD (improvements)
- new menu options (share score feature)
- new scoreboards (scrolls, stores more)
- new graphics (retro style graphics, background, etc.)
- new graphic effects (particles, etc.)
- new controls (bumpers are slowdown)
- plus tons of more details...

The general overall polish has been vamped up extensively.

No. There's rumors we are getting leaderboards and achievements. So, we scrapped this HUGE project of doing online scoreboards (like leaderboards), and challenges (like achievements), with no-slow-down sharing (no XBLIG component currently does this because it's hard to not generate garbage)... It's why Decimation X update took so long, was because we were doing it right, and then eventually created a huge project out of it. Larger than our typical indie game actually.

It was going to be called Score Share, and we were going to let other devs use it: http://xona.com/scoreshare/

Too bad. :(

When we get leaderboards and achievements, we hope to update all our games with them.

The XBLIG games with Online Scoreboards work well for the most part, but are limited in number. When you can share only the top 50 or top 1,000 scores, the rest are deleted, and so when you view your friends scores (for the extreme few XBLIG games that allow this), they will only show the friends who exist in the Top X scores. This is what I tried to avoid, and I had a system that almost worked, but slowed the game down, and I know I could get something working, but it takes time, and when there are more pressing issues (Duality ZF, Score Rush, Decimation X2, Decimation X3, and the now dropped temporarily due to time, Score Rush 2), it's hard to focus on a hack that I 'hope' will work properly. Now, I could merely implement a half-assed solution, and claim that my game has 'online scoreboards', and most people will be happy to see their score in the top 1,000, and perhaps not notice that some friends are missing, but it just didn't seem proper. I am hoping now that Indie Games will soon release ability to do proper Leaderboards and Achievements, and when this happens, we will implement this in every one of our games. This is something we at Xona Games have been passionate about and fighting for years, to the point where we were almost banned from the XNA Creators Club (now App Hub) forums.
